By evaluating the devastating effects of the government shutdown in October of 2013, as a result of an “absence of appropriations” and the government’s inability to enact an authorization for the continuing resolutions of the following year, one can scrutinize the numerous businesses that have been implicated by this event. Consequences relating to this shutdown have caused great discrepancies throughout the nation, for many workers were “asked to work without pay.” Furthermore, since the “federal government was left to run out of money,” many companies have been forced to stop working due to the delay in the processing of quotas; not to mention, other programs that ensure the well-being of people, one of which is the Food and Drug Administration, …show more content…
Since the Alaskan King Crab industry links to many other businesses not just locally, but globally as well, the complications in the fishing quota permits have made it impossible for many workers to execute their jobs. Moreover, the prominent concern in the minds of many fishermen in the Bering Sea has surfaced as they wonder : how will the effects of the government shutdown of the Alaskan King Crab industry affect their ability to fish legally while still avoiding the possibility of a price …show more content…
Seeing as the lack of licenses could potentially result in a loss of a about twenty percent or more not just in the industry of the Bering Sea, but also in Japanese markets, which rely heavily on the produce collected abroad, getting all licenses approved by the federal government is a primordial necessity. Otherwise, there is great potential for the price of crab to drop drastically, resulting in an overall “lost revenue” in the industry, as stated by Kyung M. Song a journalist for the Seattle Times, which will depict the many discrepancies affecting the secure economic status of the nation as a result of the government
I was surprised the something like “a government shutdown” existed and I was surprised that the government was still arguing about what their budget is going to be. Also in the article, it mentions that it was embarrassing for the president but it doesn’t seem like Trump is doing anything about the government shutdown. Also, I didn’t know that the two parties would fight about something that is important to the government like this and blaming it on each other.
” If we continue spending at current projected levels, the U.S. economy will be exposed to the risk of a sovereign debt crisis that would force economically crippling tax increases or sudden and severe cuts in government spending that would have long lasting negative consequences for U.S. economic growth and employment.” (Howard, 2011) Many small businesses have had to close their doors due to lack of company profit to off-set the cost of insurance to their employees. In addition, many businesses lay off workers to balance the new financial burden. This left numerous amounts of people left unemployed and now insured under government insurance (Medicaid and Medicare) as a result. Howard (2011) describes the pay or play that is mandated for these business owners, for
New England Seafood Company executives face a potential two-stage plan to move into the freshwater catfish market because of the banned oyster harvesting along much of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, and increased competition from foreign producers. These factors have resulted in significantly lower yields for New England Seafood. In order to stay in business, New England Seafood Company needs to look at harvesting and processing something other than seafood. New England Seafood Company looks to
The structure of this paper is as follows: a literature review of relevant past studies which incorporated one or more of the explanatory variables selected for this study; list of novel aspects of the study; a brief discussion of underlying economic theory in modelling fishery production; an outline of the models and empirical approach taken in conducting the analysis; description of the dataset; presentation of results and accompanying discussion; and concluding remarks with mention of limitations of the study and possible future considerations.
Little claims that fish like the Royal Chinook Salmon, which found market value at about four to six cents per pound, sells better than any other salmon. However poor fishing practices can lead to this high valued commodity to be lost1. Little’s report consistently pushes for more regulation and state action on illegal fishing. Yet the fishing industry had been formulated in a system where the foundation of regulation was weak. Patrolling the local waters of the state was not sufficient enough at the end of the 19th century to truly prevent serve damage to fish populations. In Lissa Wadwitz’s article Labor, Mobility and Environment in the Transnational West, She outlines that the prominence of State Fish and Game Enforcement was limited as they only had one patrol boat with a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour prior to 19112. To produce a productive, sustainable fishing economy, this was a determent to the longevity of economy of the
Driven by such high prices, many fishermen, chefs and business owners depend on the bluefin tuna industry for a way to support their lives. Respectively so, without sustainable fishing practices and stricter regulations for the bluefin tuna, neither Japan, nor the rest of the world will even have the choice on whether or not eating and fishing bluefin tuna should be an option (Crockett).
Committees submit views and estimates to Budget Committees. (Frequently, the House Budget Committee sets own date based on Legislative Calendar)
Federal research activities at the National Institutes of Health (which lost about three-quarters of its employees), the National Science Foundation (which lost 98 percent of its workforce), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (which lost two-thirds) shut down nearly entirely; the CDC scaled back its monitoring of disease outbreaks.
Alaskan Crab only “makes up 8% of the total sold in the US” (Stewart) which leaves room for many other King Crab companies to make profit. When something puts their fishing season on hold, which only lasts the fall (Red), profits and jobs desperately hurt, and it does not matter whether it is because of government or weather. While the King Crab market was already predicted to crash , Japan also had their holiday market ready for imports to begin October 15th (Red), yet the shutdown did not end till the 16th which led to predicted drops in profits. Needless to say Alaskan King Crab had a bunch on the line with Japan if this shipment were not to
Luke Combs Mrs. Daugherty English 9 March 20, 2017 Are Fishing Regulations Strict Enough? Fishing has been around for thousands and thousands of years. It has been a crucial part to our survival and well being as a human race. Nowadays fishing is not only done for food, it has also become a recreational activity. With the large affect fishing has on our society isn’t it important we regulate what we do with the fish? Fishing regulations are used to protect what we do with the fish and the limits we have. Commercial fishing regulations need to be stricter or fishing may not be around forever. Fish populations are declining much faster than scientists ever thought. In fact the population of fish has declined by nearly fifty percent since the
The result of the fact that approximately 30,000 people out of work in the fishing industry of NewFoundLand and Labrador clearly illustrates that overfishing affects the economy in Canada. Finally, the evidence of salmon stocks in British Columbia that were constantly killed in commercial and recreational fisheries proves that overfishing in Canada could cause major disruptions to the environment.
A government shutdown can be a scary and traumatic event, but how worried should America really be? What causes a shutdown to happen? Under the Constitution, Congress must pass laws to spend money. If Congress cannot agree on a spending bill –or the president vetoes it- the government does not have the legal authority to spend money. Therefore, the House and Senate must agree on a law to pass one. If they cannot agree, they will briefly shutdown the government until they come to resolution.
The availability of seafood in Canadian and Argentinean waters is also dependent on the total allowable catch allocated to Clearwater in a given area. Although the totals allowable catch in these areas and Clearwater 's enterprise allocations have been largely stable, fishery regulators have the right to make changes in the total allowable catch based on their assessment of the resource from time to time. Any reduction of total allowable catches in the areas from which Clearwater sources seafood, or the reduction of stocks due to changes in the environment or the health of certain species, may have a material adverse effect on Clearwater 's financial condition and results of operations.
In order for there to be plenty of fish in the years ahead, fisheries will have to develop sustainable fisheries and some will have to close. Due to the constant increase in the human population, the oceans have been overfished with a resulting decline of fish crucial to the economy and communities of the world. The control of the world's fisheries is a controversial subject, as they cannot produce enough to satisfy the demand, especially when there aren't enough fish left to breed in healthy ecosystems. Scientists are often in the role of fisheries managers and must regulate the amount of fishing in the oceans, a position not popular with those who have to make a living fishing ever decreasing populations.
According to the United Nations, 17% of fish stocks worldwide are currently overexploited; 52% are fully exploited; and 7% are depleted. This means that only an estimated 20% of worldwide fish stocks are not already at or above their capacity(Seafarms, 2013). Catches of Pacific herring have decreased by 71% since the 1960s, with Atlantic herring catches falling by 63%. Atlantic Cod catches have fallen by 69% in the same time(Seafarms, 2013). These are just a few of many facts and statistics on the topic of overfishing. The effects of these statistics and facts impact people’s and animal's lives around the
