Grecian Stereotypes

Culture, the established, coherent set of beliefs, attitudes, values, and practices shared by a large group of people (McCornack, 2013) The differences that are shared around the world are not limited to race, religion and language. Culture is one of the largest distinguishing characteristics that separate people. Grecian culture is different not only to the United States culture, but the cultures within the United States as well. When it comes to Grecian culture the way an individual displays himself or herself is a value that is cherished among members, especially future employers. “Self-presentation is important in order to gain your employers attention and the attention of the customers of the company you are working for” (“Cultural …show more content…

Cultures are numerous which gives people the ability to form stereotypes on all of them; and Grecian culture is no different. Two of the most frequent stereotypes from the Grecian culture that are discussed: that all Greeks are nostalgic, which means exhibiting a sentimental or wistful yearning; and also that the Grecian culture is very agricultural and rural (“Cultural Information-Greece”). According to two of my sources, both of these stereotypes are wrong, at least in some way. While some Grecian people may experience nostalgic feelings, most members of the Greek Culture “are fiercely independent and recognize their own importance and contributions” (Omur, 2011). However, nostalgic people enjoy discussing the past, and people of the Grecian culture use, “prehistory, poetry, art and mythology as examples of their affection for culture beyond a timeline.” A second stereotype that is prominent in Grecian culture is that its rural area defines it, and it does not. While some people do live in rural areas and make livings on the agricultural products they produce, most Grecian people live in rather big cities (“Cultural
