Hamlet has lived through plenty of ups and downs throughout his childhood. He has been lost and confused within himself, but knew he wanted one thing, which was revenge on his fathers killer, Claudius. His passion of hate developed for Claudius as he married Hamlets mother shortly after the king’s death. Hamlet could not decide on the perfect decision for himself, his mother and father as well as the best way to follow through with the best consequence for Claudius that would impress his father. His everyday life, along with his love life, left him with an empty heart, which slowed the process of the revenge down. Hamlet never expected to be captured and kidnapped by pirates, as he was sent overseas as a young man. His inside thoughts were attacking and overwhelming Him, leaving him depressed and anxious. Hamlet’s life has been leading him to negative thoughts that he cannot process or act accordingly to, due to the excessive amount of issues and options involved in his life at a young age, him being overwhelmed lead him to delaying the process of avenging his fathers killer.

The play is about Prince Hamlet and his struggles with the new marriage of his mother, Gertrude, and his uncle and now stepfather, King Claudius about only two months after his father’s death. Hamlet has an encounter with his father, Old King Hamlet, in ghost form. His father accuses Claudius of killing him and tells Hamlet to avenge his death. Hamlet is infuriated by this news and then begins his thoughts on what to do to get revenge. Hamlet and Claudius are contrasting characters. Despite his hatred of his uncle Claudius and his sense of the injustice perpetuated upon his father's memory, Hamlet seems unable to obey the will of his father's ghost. Ultimately, this is not shown to be a sign of weakness or cowardice upon Hamlet's part. Rather, the intellectual protagonist understands all too well the futility of attempting to use violence to enact justice. By attempting to become an avenger, Hamlet simply begets more violence.

Hamlet seems obsessed with the concept of death. Along with his slipping sanity Hamlet is not able to find any hard evidence making him act rash where he stages a play to make his own evidence. Claudius seems to suspect Hamlet because of Hamlet’s plan to be mad with love and sends two former friends of Hamlet to spy on him. Hamlet believes he is in control though when he tells them, “I do not well understand that. Will you play upon this pipe” (III.ii.313). Hamlet realizes what Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are up to and tells them nothing. Feeling that his uncle s up to him, Hamlet uses the play to judge Claudius’s reaction and proceed from there. This scene could be considered the climax of the play where Hamlet knows for sure Claudius killed the late king and Claudius knows Hamlet knows. This scene might seem like Hamlet’s actions caused the mistake, but Hamlet’s inability to confront his uncle makes Hamlet to act with hesitation. The cause of Hamlet’s losing sanity is the king. Claudius seems to be the origin point for almost all of Hamlet’s problems: his dead father, his faithless mother, and the target for a revenge plan he do seems hesitant on. The play begins with the appearance of the ghost of King Hamlet, following the sudden marriage of Hamlet’s mother and uncle. On the surface Prince Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, “seems” interested in the state of Denmark and being Hamlet’s new “father”; however, it is apparent that underneath the façade, Claudius is selfish and manipulative. It is later revealed, that Claudius commits an “unnatural” deed of murdering his own brother to satisfy two of his desires: the throne and his need to have Gertrude to himself. Shakespeare uses biblical allusions to illustrate the heinous crime that Claudius commits for his own ambition.

“While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself”, as is what happens to those who take revenge, buried in their own unforgiveness. Francis Bacon’s idea of revenge attempts to bypass this problem of unforgiveness, with the forgiveness of the perpetrator. But not all revenge can be simply forgiven, which is the case in Hamlet; Francis Bacon also knows about this problem, but describes it in his own words with “The most tolerable sort of revenge is for those wrongs which there is no law to remedy; but then let a man take heed the revenge be such as there is no law to punish”(Francis Bacon 15). Sir Francis Bacon’s idea of revenge relates to Hamlet in how revenge is handled, the repercussions of acting in revenge, and its ability to change a person's thought process.

The ghost then tells Hamlet Claudius has murdered him by pouring poison into his ear. Hamlet loves his father and believes he needs to kill Claudius. The opportunity to kill Claudius appears when Claudius is in his room. Hamlet walks in on Claudius praying and is about to kill him. Hamlet refuses to murder Claudius in that moment. In Hamlet, Hamlet does not kill Claudius when he is given the opportunity because Claudius is praying, Hamlet is not ready to kill, and Hamlet is insane.

Hamlet and the Issue of Revenge in William Shakespeare's Play The question of why Hamlet does not immediately avenge his father's death is perhaps one of the most perplexing problems faced by an audience.
