Baptist Health, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky is the largest not-for-profit healthcare organization in the state. Baptist Health was originally founded in 1924 as a single 120 bed hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2004, Riverview Medical Center (RRMC), originally called The Holy Name of Jesus Hospital, was acquired and revamped by the Hospital Management Associates (HMA) and has become a state of art facility with improved efficiencies to ensure high quality care. “RRMC is a 281-licensed bed acute care facility accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, certified for participation in the Medicare Program, and contracted/participated in Blue Cross Plans” (Richards & Slovensky, 2004). The facility is one of the primary employers in the area and provides job opportunities to approximately 700 individuals” (Richards & Slovensky, 2004). RRMC encountered significant challenges against their competitors, Mountain View, Gadsden Regional and HealthSouth. A major challenge was the fact that they were not the sole or primary healthcare provider in the market service area. Secondly, many of RRMC’s key medical staff members and group practices were not in a central location within the vicinity of the hospital. Thirdly, RRMC’s emergency department was in great need of renovation and they lacked in the variety of clinical programs they offered in terms of cancer treatment, neurosurgery, psychiatry, obstetrics, rehabilitation and surgical outpatient care.
Florida Hospital has grown to be one of the largest healthcare providers in the United States. Impressively, Florida Hospital had a very humble beginning and a modest growth. In 1908, a small group of Seventh Day Adventists in Orlando developed their vision of bringing health care to the area. As part of their philanthropy, they were able to raise the funds necessary to purchase Florida Hospital’s first facility near Lake Estelle. It was a two story farmhouse that had a wraparound porch and had once served those needing treatment for tuberculosis. The facility had the capacity to care for 20 patients at any given time.

I agree Hospitals, Long-term care and mental health systems play respective roles in the health community. The two hospital that we have in Jackson is very viable for our area because most of the smaller rural county have closed their hospital. These closures affect not only the patients that depend on the hospitals but also the economy in many rural areas (Balasubramanian, & Jones, 2016). Many factors come into play when a hospital decides to shut off services. Although influencing reasons may vary, hospital closures are likely to be caused by financial shortfalls. The site compares hospitals using a star rating, which summarizes 57 quality measures (U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services , 2018). Consumers can compare hospitals with greater quality measures to seek treatment. CMS’s ability to compare various hospitals hold an accountability to hospital organizations to have high standards of care.
