Problem Analysis Heather Evans is a very recent graduate from Harvard Business School and has been working on getting her venture off the ground for quite some time. She has the know-how and skill in her industry but not the funds. This is why she is seeking out investors. This is proving to be more difficult and time consuming than she had anticipated. I think most people have this experience at one time or another especially if they are starting their own business. The great ideas of the world do not always get all the support in the world. To make matters worse, Evans has invested plenty of her personal funds in the business and has hired a few employees. In essence she has put a lot of skin in the game. So there is no option of just deciding that the venture was not a success. To put the icing on the cake it seemed for a little while that Evans had found a sole investor. However after seeing the unprofessional manner and lack of attention to Evans that was shown by the investor, Evans decided not to pursue the possibility of this investor. Without fund Evans may be forced to abandon the venture. And time is pressing against her. With a lot of personal funds already invested she has a limited window of time that she will have before she will not have enough money to sustain herself while the business grows to where she could take a salary
1) When evaluating the opportunity for Heather Evans it is important to analyze the situation from a few perspectives. From an industry perspective there is ample opportunity for her to succeed. The barriers to entry are quite low with no clear market leader and even the largest companies do not have high relative market share. Her concept appears to provide her with some differentiation and that will help to position her products to a target segment of the market. The industry growth rate is a strong 10%; however customer retention will be a challenge. Evans does not seem to have the requisite experience or network in the industry to embark on a solo venture. In all, there is an opportunity for a designer with a strong business plan to be

In the article UBC faces new rights complaint over handling of sex-assault report by the Globe and Mail, it is explained that in January 2013, Stephanie Hale was sexually assaulted by a fellow student at the University of British Columbia. When filing a complaint to B.C.’s Human Rights Tribunal against the alleged attacker, they took little action in resolving the case, which in turn took Hale’s health and education for the worst. Hale believes there to be a better method in responding to reports like these and has continued to try persuade to the university to change its policies through the aid of lawyers and having trials, but to no avail. However, many are filing complaints to universities and are attempting to change their policies.
There are very minimal rhetorical tools in the article. There is some metaphor at the beginning of the article where Jen Lemos adds to the topic censorship. “Adding to the continuous struggle for free speech on the internet in the Untied stats, the fight against censorship has spread to all parts of the world”. Jen Lemos uses the following words fight and struggle.
Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act is a renewal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which is an aid program for disadvantaged students. Although it does sound as if the Act is helping children all across the country, Alexandra Robbins thoroughly explains otherwise in her book, The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids. Within pages eighty five through eighty nine, Robbins thoroughly shows her negativity to the Act and why it’s hurting children rather than helping them. She uses hard facts, such as the emphasis on tests, altered curricula, and the corrupt college admission process to prove her point.

Through out his tenure at Sunbeam,Al Dunlap’s advocated profit by firing many employees and shutting down many factories. If we look at it in the short term ,this approach seems very attractive as it brings in quick short term gains. In the long term ,however, such a decision would not ensure the sustainability of the company. Honesty and humility also goes a real long way with investors. Calling out exactly what your advantages are is something a venture capitalist or investor can work with.
It is often difficult for entrepreneurs to trust investors with their new business because the entrepreneurs have created a business from the start. It comes to the point where it has become their life and trusting an investor to own part of it is always a risk. It is true that entrepreneurs require investors, but they need to make sure that the investor does not start owning the business and making changes according to their preferences. Investing is a natural thing for any person to do and require before initiation of a business. For example, a person starts off a business with minimum funds and then waits until those funds yield profit. For instance, a business requires initial capital to begin and become popular amongst the consumer market. Once it has been established, it will keep on yielding profit in the long run. A good example can of a restaurant where money is required to make a place and get the initial inventory. Once everything has been established, profit is yielded when more and more people come.
