Individualistic societies tend to encourage freedom and expression, viewing sexual behaviors more broadly and considering sexual pleasures normal. In contrast, members from collectivists cultures are often discouraged from expression sexual behaviors and impose limiting conditions and specific circumstances in its expression. For instance, in these individualistic cultures, there is a permissive approach to different sexual forms, allowing women to expose most of their body parts, no strict definition on sexual identity and sexual orientation, and even has great tolerance towards homosexuality. However, collectivist societies refuse and limit these expression, some regarding chastity as essential, practicing circumcision for cleanliness and purity, others requiring women to be vailed and covered from head to foot, severely restricting gender roles, and having less tolerance towards homosexuality. Years of social construction have played a role in shaping the way we understand race and sexuality. I agree that we are a mixture of impulses. I have a few friends who state they are bisexual and are swingers. This type of behavior has always existed even in biblical times. According to the bible, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for many of the sexual acts that are openly talked about today. I personally feel that we are curious creatures and often act upon our curiosity and our desire, in order to please our flesh. As an individual surrounded by family and friends who candidly advocate for the unwavering, equal rights of homosexuals in all aspects of life and community, it is difficult to understand why debate is still taking place. Its undeniable that one of the many hot topics now a days is homosexuality/sexual orientation and like any sort of debate of any kind the first response is to clump it into a group thats commonly defined so that everyones on the same ground. The only problem with that is especially for something like sexual orientation trying to clump such a complex concept is unfair because things often get misunderstood or left out because sexual orientation is a lot more than a simple yes/no right/wrong answer.

Sexuality has become a prominent issue in today’s society as the world are becoming more liberated by educational and ethical discussion. In Sociosexual orientation, homosexuality is one of the topic that has been most discussed. People have been actively seeking for answers for the question – why are humans, or other animals, attracted to partner that has the same-sex of themselves; when there are no evolutionary implications yet. Moreover, many others, especially the homosexuals, are repositioning to the question of how can they identify the seemingly minority when heterosexuality has been historically predominant.

People think that you can only be exclusively heterosexual or exclusively homosexual because people think at birth that you are either one or the other by fate. They say there is little change to change your pattern in a lifetime. They say it is based on physical and mental qualities. You either have them or you don't, and that is what makes you who you are (p. 180).

Sex holds such great importance to the general populous, we are conditioned from youth to follow the moral and social norms of our societies and a great part of this is our individual behaviours and acts of sound reasoning. We are conditioned to follow the laws and social rules, one of which is to adhere to safe sexual practices for our own personal health and safety and that of our sexual partners, however, this may not always be the case, due to some perceived social stigmas we may not always follow these social norms or to keep up with our peers we may choose to follow our peers or the perceptions of others to make our choices.

In today’s society, it is impossible to go two weeks without seeing a headline detailing a recently proposed law regarding same-sex marriages or a news report depicting a mildly influential individual being publicly crucified for expressing degrading comments about homosexuality. Despite the commotion that surrounds the issue, I believe that it is not that complicated of a topic. Personally, I believe that the dispute should be separated into two distinct situations with two distinct solutions. On one hand, you have a political debate. Last semester, I realized the hurtfulness of people’s comments about sexuality for the first time. I knew I had heard homophobic remarks before, but it was the first time I witnessed it and understood how it can affect someone first hand. It was the first time I felt truly disgusted by the hate in which people teach others.

Sociology surrounds every aspect of life, from birth to death. Throughout history, different demographics have had to fight for their rights to be recognized as equal to white males. From the acquisition of blacks right to vote to the women’s rights movement our society is slowly progressing to a state of equality. One demographic that has been in the news lately is the homosexual community seeking rights to legally marry. A multitude of sociological concepts can be applied to topic of homosexuality in America. Topics ranging from the Functionalist theory to Marxism and ethnocentrism to subculture can all provide insight to the homosexual culture in America.

The world today faces many cultural and ethical issues that some believe are only relevant in today’s day and age. The Bible bluntly states that homosexuality is a sin. However, would it still be considered homosexuality if there were a gender change surgery before going through with the immoral act? There are many scripture verses in the Old Testament that evidence the demoralization of a sex change both then and there and here and now.

Before it came down to just two classifications of how we identified ourselves, it took centuries to come up with two names that clarified a huge issue.Today claiming to be a homosexual is no big deal. You can marry freely and claim it on your Facebook page, but back in the late 19th and early 20th century, it was something known as a “silent sin”. It was not understood as well as there was no classification to call yourself if you did have an attraction to the same sex. Modern understandings and terminology evolved from the work and understandings of sexologist in the late 1900’s and early 20th century.
