Before taking into consideration that honesty is extremely important when writing, we should understand what honesty means. Honesty is being sincere, truthful, trustworthy, honorable, fair, genuine, and loyal with integrity. It is the best way to gain respect and confidence from your audience. According to Linda Flower, in her work of “Writing for an Audience”, “the goal of the writer is to create a momentary common ground between the reader and the writer. You want the reader to share your knowledge and your attitude toward that knowledge.” The ability to adapt your knowledge to the needs of the reader is often crucial to your success as a writer. Even if the reader eventually disagrees, you want him or her to be able for the moment to see things as you see them. Telling the truth lets everyone know what really happened. There's less chances of misunderstandings, confusion, or conflict. If you tell the truth, you have an infinite power supporting you. …show more content…
We are more comfortable with ourselves and many times we gain a reputation for being truthful, a trait that most people value. Telling the truth helps you feel secure and peaceful inside. As writers these are the same feelings we run into when writing to our audience. Although in many occasions the audience will differ with you and may have opposing point of views, you will always be able to defend yourself with the sufficient information and with clear and true responses. Aswriters we have an important responsibility at our hands. We have to be honest at all times. Honesty is a straightforward conduct. Tell the truth despite
Honesty is a good principle, however it does not have to be absolute. Although we should always strive to stay honorable and genuine, deception, under certain conditions and during certain times are justifiable. This point is acknowledged and bolstered in the novel Grapes of Wrath, repeatedly throughout history and proven through scientific research.
It is actually very hard to be completely honest all the time and in every situation. But I believe that being honest can be very rewarding in the end because you are not deceiving others or yourself which is beneficial to you and society.
Honesty without integrity can also lead to moral disasters. Well, honesty may be important but not sufficient for integrity. Integrity is both essential and significant. It is acceptable and one will agree with what Stephen L. Carter says about a person having honesty but not integrity. There are also some white lies present. Sometimes saying the truth or telling everything you know might hurt somebody. Harm may not be the intention but positively the effect.
Honesty is the quality or fact of being honest. Finding a pen off the floor and giving it to a teacher is honesty. Not keeping the pen was respectful and honest, in order to reach
Would some people want to know the whole truth? Even if it would hurt that person? What would that person do if it did hurt you? Therefore, knowing the truth can make people question if people can trust other people, it can make people see other people in a different perspective, and it will make it very hard to regain people’s trust.
Anne Lamott made some very good points about truthful writing in Bird by Bird. I love when she said, “ I want people to crash or dive below the surface, where life is so cold and confusing and hard to see. I want writers to plunge through the holes-- the holes we
Suppose your best friend came up to you one day and rolled up her sleeves revealing cuts all along her arms and wrists. What would you do about it? How would you react? You would want to be the one to speak up right? Are you worried about not being considered a friend? Are you worried about being labeled as someone bad? Don’t worry, not everyone will have the courage to speak up like you. This is what Natalia chose to do during Mary Kate Frank’s article, in order to save her friend’s life. Although some readers of “To Tell or Not to Tell” by Mary Kate Frank, have argued that people should not speak up because they are afraid of being labeled as a snitch or losing friends, closer examination shows that we should speak up seeing that being a
Halsey. She's fresh, she's controversial, she's "brutally honest and winging it." Entering the desert in a big way with her squad, she makes sure people know she's there. With humble beginnings, she worked her way up. She's made herself both friends and enemies but one thing is for sure, she's made music. Between her Room 93 EP and her Badlands album, her music has been changing the game. With an electronic sound to accompany her chilling voice, Halsey has built a fanbase of people looking for edgy music and an edgy twenty-something making it. If you're looking for a song by her, I suggest "Control," "Empty Gold," or "Haunting." *you don't have to like her to enjoy her music, ok thank you.* Also, if you're on your way to see "The Huntsman:
This is a letter in support of Sally Robertson, a very talented teacher with whom I have had the pleasure of working as her student and her colleague over the course of many years at Georgia Perimeter College.
The poem that I enjoyed most this week was Carolyn Kizer’s “Bitch.” I was really intrigued by the honesty and emotion that the author put into this piece. It is clear that the young woman in the poem is torn between the way she feels and the way she is expected to behave. The young woman has run into an old lover. She feels distraught and upset over the encounter, but remains cool and collected on the outside. I believe that this is a very common emotion. As the poem goes on, Kizer indicates why she is so distraught over this encounter. It seems that the narrator is angry at the ex-lover for ending their romance due to expectations put forth by society. Many times people are expected to behave in a certain way, hiding their
Even if others want you to say things that aren’t true. Shakespeare uses Edmund to highlight what will happen if you are dishonest. Edmund lies and tells everybody that Edgar is trying to kill their dad in order to get his money. “Draw. Seem to defend yourself. Now quit you well./Yield!
In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein the critical essay “Lesbian Panic and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” (“Lesbian Panic”) by Frann Michel approaches Frankenstein from a gender perspective and applies Adrienne Rich’s lesbian continuum, the “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence” where female relationships, mother-daughter/sisters/female friendships which all fall under the umbrella of lesbian relations, to the relationships that are present in Frankenstein. Frann Michel clarifies through her essay that any work of literature that takes a critical point of view of heterosexual relationships is, in fact, a lesbian text. Michel states that in Frankenstein the motion of lesbian panic is prevalent because lesbian desire is avoided at all costs – during the 1800’s society was rampant with panic, or phobia, amongst those who were afraid of potential sexual desires with one another. Lesbians were considered “Sapphic monstrosities” (Michel 351). In placing female characteristics on all characters in the novel Michel argues, in “Reading Mothers and Lovers”, that Victor Frankenstein’s “maternal anxiety” and his creature’s unfulfilled desire for a female is a doubling of them reflecting with their female counterparts under the lesbian continuum (Michel 355). In “Difference and Desire” Michel claims that Justine and Elizabeth’s tender moments at the end of Justine’s life comes to an end as a result of her unjust confinement and murder. The creature created by Victor is henceforth the
This piece talks about a topic that I am familiar with. Writing for an audience is something I do just about every week for one of my classes. Flower writes about how different audiences will expect different types of writing. I thought it was interesting how different sayings can be interpreted in different ways. With that being said, It was brought to my attention that just saying a lake can be two totally different interpretations. One being pleasant and one being miserable.
Honesty plays a vital role in my personal code of ethics requiring integrity, especially in dealing with those near and dear to me. Integrity plays a vital role in my ability to hold myself accountable for any decisions or actions I make.
Also, truth is not always good to say. If the objective of telling the truth is to hurt someone, then it is considered to be inferior to a most terrible lie. For that reason, while speaking the truth we should keep in mind that it doesn't hurt someone else’s feelings or relations. The problem we face is that, we feel the urge to tell the truth when we see it. But, we should try to accomplish this without disapproving condemnations that hurt others. So when we freely express harsh judgment of another, we are in fact talking about those negative qualities of ourselves that trouble us the most.
