The American Colonies became very eager to gain independence after the intolerable acts and many confrontations that occurred with Great Britain. Before the american revolution the american colonies had relied on militias that provided local defense that were run by part time soldiers. As tensions rose with Great Britain the need for a more united or national militia force seemed more clear to the colonies. In june of 1775 the second continental congress decided to create and fund the Continental Army. The congress then unanimously voted that George Washington would be appointed as Commander in chief of the Continental Army.
