Climate change and its link to increased terrorist activity will directly and indirectly affect the United States in the next ten years, while also laying the foundation for climate change to become one of the most pressing security challenges that the United States will face in the coming years.
From the shores of Easter Island all the way to the catastrophic world environmental events like Hurricane Katrina and extreme drought, the world and the environment has been facing unparalleled effects from climate change that have only continued to reach further extences. Climate change is rising up to be one of the key security threats in the 21st century for not only America but also all across the globe. Climate change threatens to go against
This paper recognizes that climate change, which can be defined as the gradual increase in temperature caused by the increased production of carbon dioxide, presents a fundamental national security challenge.
The Unites States of America is currently working to combat climate change in order to protect people from its effects. By combatting climate change, the USA hopes to prevent its effects from becoming worse in the future because the USA cares for its citizens and doesn’t want them to keep experiencing the consequences of climate change. The USA is putting great effort into dealing with climate change and also hopes that other businesses, organization, and individuals will join them in their effort (Environmental News Service). One concern the USA has towards climate change is its cause of natural disasters. Climate change is bringing more natural disasters by making weather patterns stronger, and weather patterns are becoming stronger as climate change grows which is bringing more natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and drought to the USA (Rice). One example of a natural disaster that occurred in the USA as a result of climate change is the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. In this event, a tornado rated 5 on the Enhanced Fuijta scale hit Oklahoma and had a negative impact on this city by destroying many of its houses and buildings also resulting in the destruction of businesses such as schools (Cable News Network). Another major concern of the USA towards climate change is that it will cause a rise in the global sea level which will result in many of its coastal cities to be submerged underwater. There will be a permanent 4 feet rise in the global sea level
With the rise of calamitous news regarding extremists groups taking over certain states, countries threatening to go to war, and viruses spreading throughout the world; the outlook of humanity does not look good. In addition to these dire headlines is the matter of climate change, which, unfortunately, is not as alarming to the public eye. Nonetheless, climate change is a pressing matter as it will impact every facet of society from economy to even human survival. Perhaps the general public find climate change as a vapid subject because of its nature to react belatedly to human activity, and how it is often represented with numbers, graphs, and projections; things that are not compelling to those that do not understand its importance. Even
Google defines climate change as “a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.” Neil Oculi from Humanity In Action says “Climate change presents both internal security threats (threats geographically localized within the US) and external threats (threats existing in regions outside the US that
Climate change is affecting the U.S. now, not just in the future. It is affecting more things than most people believe. When many people think about climate change they only think about carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases being released into the air and how that causes the ice caps to melt, but climate change is also having a major effect on infrastructure. Highways, bridges, buildings, water plants, and harbors are being damaged by sea level rise, heavy downpours, and extreme heat all caused by climate change. These damages are predicted to increase if climate change continues. These damages will cost an enormous amount of money. To solve this problem, the U.S. needs to put more money into infrastructure in their budget to create better
When a top U.S. economic advisor gave a speech in Williamsburg, Virginia, he told his audience not to worry about atmospheric warming because the global temperature increases predicted by scientists were much less than the temperature increase he had experienced that day traveling from Washington, D.C. to nearby Williamsburg, Virginia. The flaw in this advisor’s reasoning is that there are temperature changes globally between different regions however, each of these regions is slowly getting hotter. For example, the New York is much cooler than Texas however, each of these regions is getting warmer. Climate change is not just temperatures getting warmer but the increase in the CO2 is causing severe weather conditions globally. We are seeing
As the U.S becomes more industrialized, we have noticed severe changes not only in the economy but in the climate as well. Although change is inevitable, the most recent changes we will begin to notice more often in rising sea levels, melting ice and torrential downpours are fierce. Climate change is caused by a multitude of activities. Much of what happens in the future relies strictly on the actions and inactions of what we do now and later. Experiencing a multitude of different dramatic occurrence's, our Earth is suffering because of climate change. With these issues rapidly increasing, there have been organizations put into place in order to make life here on Earth more sustainable.
For centuries the United States Military has addressed the many challenges of national security, from fighting for the foundation of America in the Revolutionary war, to the containment of terrorism and Islamic extremism in recent years, but now global climate change presents a new and very different type of challenge to national security. The stability of the world’s climate that has enabled human civilizations to grow and flourish over the last five thousand years is changing, causing environmental conditions deteriorate and cause worldwide instability that threatens national security. The sobering truth is that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are greater now than at any time in the past 650,000 years , and as the average global temperature is continuing to rise, necessary resources for sustaining global stability, such as food and clean water, are becoming scarce and or unavailable. While uncertainty may exist regarding the science and future extent of projected climate changes, the trends are clear. Climate change is happening, weather patterns are intensifying, essential provisions are decreasing, and instability is spreading. Climate change has already begun to put stress on the security and stability of society, but the worst effects on both the developed and developing world have yet to be felt. The United States must prepare for the future effects of climate change on political, economic, and social stability if
It is evident that the climate of the world is changing and has been since the creation of the earth but over that past decade the change had begun to occur more rapidly. With this occurrence of climate change is the occurrence of violent conflict among humans. In most parts of the world the climate change impacts social ecological systems such as temperature, sea level, and annual precipitation. Other occurrence have just increased in intensity and frequency such as floods, droughts, storms, cyclones, fires, heat-waves, epidemics and hurricanes. Yet these environmental changes do not undermine human security but they do assist in the use up of the natural resources that humans need to maintain the “normal” daily life and most importantly survive.
Climate change is expanding worse and more dangerous each hour. Shocking facts are arising about climate change. What is more startling is how humans have been causing it, and it may affect us. For centuries, we as a human race have been completely belligerent to the signs staring us right in the face. If the damage is not repaired or progress slowed, consequences will be paid. The dangers of global warming are threatening wildlife and humans with conditions like rising sea level.
For the past years, global warming and climate change became important issues of science and the environment. However, with the realization of the possible threats it poses to humankind in general, global warming gained international significance. Climate change is a global problem that requires a global response embracing the needs and interests of all countries (Boer, 2008). Countries around the world, convinced by the threats of the global warming, choose to act hand-in-hand to face to the issue.
To understand how Climate Change is a threat to national security, it is important to first consider what climate change is, and how it differs from all previously defined threats to national security. “Climate change is a broadly inclusive term that refers to a long-term (decades to centuries) change in any of a number of environmental conditions for a given place and time—such as temperature, rainfall, humidity, cloudiness, wind and air circulation pattern, etc.” Climate scientists project average global temperatures to become hotter, sea levels to rise higher, droughts to last longer, food and water supplies to diminish, health problems to increase, ecosystems to forever alter, and the global population of climate change refugees to grow as civilizations are displaced or lost to extreme natural disasters. The security implications of these changes are that they can and will provide future avenues to inflate destabilizing conflicts that threaten national security. Historically, national security has meant

Climate change is one of the biggest news headlines of today. While there are skeptics that believe that global warming is just a hoax, there are many undeniable phenomenons happening around the world. The effects of climate change, in the long run, will be catastrophic if it is left alone. In just the past two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a wildfire more aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty people and leveling almost six thousand structures. Millions of Americans are displaced due to these unusually aggressive storms and the fires raging throughout California. Arctic species have seen massive reductions in their populations, with less food to eat, and less mates to breed with. The toxicity of the air in urban cities and contamination of waters outside these cities is on the rise. If the world keeps dismissing the importance of climate change, there will be calamitous consequences for the future generations. The effects of climate change, if not fixed, will be Arctic ice melting, reduction in animal populations, habitats threatened, and the air toxicity and seasonal allergies to humans. The causes include the greenhouse effect and air pollution.
Usually people pay attention on daily weather changes and how the weather will be through the week or the month, but do we pay attention on climate change how it affects our lives. Did we ask ourselves what are the causes of climate change? How climate change impacts our activities? Can we do something to solve this big issue before to turn to a big disaster? These questions make me think deeply how we work to solve this problem because the earth is the only place so far we can live on it. Climate change has become a worldwide problem and this issue affects human lives, environment, social and economic. The change in climate has serious impacts on our natural ecosystem and as human we should face it before causing great catastrophe such as water availability, agriculture, rising sea levels and health. Many studies recognize that sign of change is increasing in average temperatures, snow and rainfall, patterns are shifting, and extreme climate events are becoming more common in our days. These changes are expected to grow if we don’t solve the issues or the causes of climate change.
