How To Solve The Homeless Problem

Homelessness has been a prevalent and contentious topic since its public emergence in the 1980’s. In fact, according to the most recent estimates, on any given night in the United States, there are roughly 645,000 people residing in homeless shelters or unsheltered street locations (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2011). And based on a local study done by the Mental Health Unit at the Houston Police Department in 2011, Houston has the largest homeless population in Texas and the eighth largest in the United States. While many great efforts have been put forth to aid the homeless population in Houston, “the public health epidemiology task of quantifying and tracking child and family homelessness over time has been complicated…by increasing rates of…shortages [in] affordable housing” (Grant et al., 2013), and restrictions on temporary encampments (Loftus-Ferren, 2013). In order to successfully reduce, prevent and combat homelessness, more policies must be put in place to create sustainable, affordable housing for homeless families and to modify current laws that harm homeless individuals.

Homelessness is an issue in American society today that affects anywhere from 800,000 to 3.5 million people. There are a substantial amount of people that are without shelter, food, or employment, and there are numerous other people affected by poverty and homelessness. People living in nearly every city in the United States are affected by homelessness due to the large amounts of homeless individuals living on the streets and begging for money, food, and other necessities. The issue of homelessness has been a constant problem since the conquering of the New World, and soup kitchens and homeless shelters have not been able to fully end homelessness. Especially today, with a lack of affordable housing and high unemployment rates, homelessness is prevalent.

Homelessness in America could be considered a major issue considering that over five hundred thousand people are currently homeless in America.We see it everywhere yet it is not talked about.In the interest of finding a solution to homelessness in America we must learn the history behind it, take a look at all of it's contributors, and lastly see what exactly are we doing in order to avoid it as much as possible. Something must to be done to aid the situation before it spirals out of control.

In the United States the homeless population continues to grow rapidly. Homelessness has been a public health issue for many decades. Often times these individuals feel as though society has turned a blind eye to them. This at risk population is seen by society as lazy or chose to live a life on the streets, but if one would examine this population closely would see that there is more to this at risk population than what society has labeled them as. Social forces such as family breakdown, addictions, and mental illnesses are in combined with structural forces such as lack of low-cost housing, insufficient health services, and poor economic conditions. The sun rises, birds are chirping, and everyone is ready for their day at work. Some people take their cars, some, carpool. Others, take buses, trams, and ride sharing. Some however, find their method of transport less desirable, next to a homeless person who hitched a ride on the 24/7 bus. Everyone in the Bay Area has seen the increasing amount of haggard, limping, sleeping people on the streets. Groups of people trying to survive on what they can Over the past few years, the problem has been worsening. If anyone goes to San Francisco, Oakland, or some of the bigger cities, they will see crowds of people sleeping on the sidewalks. Cluttering the streets as they try to walk to their destination.

The United States has over 3.5 million homeless people a year. If the United States stopped supporting other nations food related issues, then they could start focusing on its own starving people. Once the U.S. starts focusing on its own people, then there could be many solutions to the well-known problem of homeless people in America. Who makes up the 3.5 million homeless people, a year, in America?

Homelessness in the United States is a multifaceted problem, there are many factors to consider when examining this homelessness including access to health care, economic conditions and public policy as well as a host of other issues. Seeing homelessness develop is a process that the older generation can say they have been apart of. The young generation, on the other hand, cannot say they have seen the development of homelessness. People who are thirty years old or younger have grown up believing that homelessness was always part of the landscape. Those concerned with the issue of homelessness are curious as to what events had to have happened that lead to the individuals living on the streets. Over the years Los Angeles has had the highest number of homeless people; this situation has been highly overlooked by media and political attention. Cities in many parts of the world may be known as centers for poverty whether if it 's a developed or developing country. No city, state, or country is prone to homelessness. Los Angeles in particular is an entry point for many immigrants who come to look for jobs. The intentions are not to cause there to be a vulnerability to poverty but to try to make a living some how. “Skid Row homeless population originates in South LA – where services and shelters lack resource adequacy and unemployment rates are high among adult men – and policy discussions rarely focus on this trend” (Howard, 4). Los Angeles Skid Row, is known to have the heaviest homeless population compared to other cities. Los Angeles does provide some homeless services like shelter and low-cost housing options for the poor but one of the issues that many homeless people come across is the lack of healthcare. Everyone can suffer from physical and mental health issues but there is a bigger impact on the homeless people in the Los Angeles county because they are not obtaining the proper help mentally, physically, and socially. Many people lose their lives or spread many disease amongst the community. People drive or walk past a homeless person almost every day without thinking twice about the plight of that person or they may even unconsciously turn their heads the other way in disgust. Homelessness simply put, means without a home - therefore homelessness is an equal opportunity state that can happen to anyone. Even though we have seen some economic prosperity over the years, statistics show that the number of homeless remains very high. With this in mind, communities need to come together at the state, city, and individual level to come up with solutions to mitigate the spreading of this problem.

A problem that I would love to solve is the amount of homeless kids in the U.S right now. Did you know that every year more than 2 million kids in America will face a period of homelessness? Statistics show that there are 40% of kids that are homeless in the U.S that are under the age of 18 years old according to Covenant House, which is a website designed for offering American teens shelter and proper education. It’s also proven that 50% of adolescents coming out of foster care and juvenile justice systems will be homeless within six months because they are unprepared to live independently and have limited education and no social support. When one is attempting to address and/or fix the issue of homelessness, it is important to understand the types of classifications, or different groups, of homeless. The first and largest group of homeless that needs to be addressed is the chronically homeless. The chronically homeless represent 10% of the single homeless population, and itself represents approximately 50% of homeless people, over time. The next group is the episodically homeless group, who use shelter repeatedly, and should probably be dealt with first. This group makes up around 9% of the single homeless population and carries a high cost when housed in shelters. The high cost comes from the member’s constant interaction with other very costly public systems, like jails and prisons and hospitals. All of this cost is then passed on to the tax payers and not the members themselves, which is why it is so important to deal here first. Twelve million adults in the US were homeless in the year 2001, or are still currently without a permanent home (“Homelessness in the U.S.”). So once we get the homeless population off the streets and in to houses the next big thing that needs to happen is keeping them off the streets. Instead of funneling money into soup kitchens use that money to fund organizations that would be able to prevent people from even becoming homeless in the first place. The problem with what is currently happening is yes they are using grants to provide permanent housing for the homeless, but once that one person is off the street five more end up on the street. If truly combating the homeless population for good is the goal then providing minor assistance to people that are close to becoming homeless is crucial.
