For this assignment I reached out to an instructor at Lakeland College who is also a professional school counselor named Wendy Falk. Wendy was happy to complete an interview with me and provided information about herself including what assessments she uses, her theoretical orientation, and why these assessments are used. Wendy also spoke about her school counseling position, a difficult case she was presented with, and her opinion on the use of assessments. Additional research was conducted to learn more about the assessments she discussed.
Biographical Information Wendy and I discussed her degree and educational background. Wendy earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in science education with an emphasis in English and journalism. For 13 years Wendy worked as an English teacher but stated, “She always had a love for counseling” (personal communication, July 7, 2015). She made the decision to enroll in a master’s level program. She stated that a school counselor is always talking to parents and students about choices and this is why she relates to Glasser’s approach. Solution focus/brief therapy is another theory that she uses in her school counseling practice and it was noted that solution focus/brief therapy is a time saver. My personal theoretical orientation is similar to Wendy’s and I have a strong appreciation of the solution focus/brief therapy due to its fast paced nature, which is often needed in a school counseling practice. School counselors do not have unlimited time or many sessions with their students. Therefore having a fast approach to solving the problem such as solution focused/brief therapy is important and
