Characteristics of Successful Online Learners Liberty University Online INFT 101
There are many characteristics for online learners. My characteristics are scared, overwhelmed, and excited all in the same breath. However there are three main characteristics found in every person, entry characteristics, participation behaviors, and course outcomes. Such characteristics can be broken down into age, race, gender, and employment status. Although these are the main characteristics found in this article, I think there are much more to the characteristics to online learners then meet the eye. (British Journal of Education Vol 44

Reading this article made me want to work harder on my degree. It made me want to study harder, to learn as much as I could so I can show that online learning is not just for smart, male, employed people like it once was. That it is for all people who want to learn and achieve their goals. Anyone that wants to pursue an online education can do it; they just have to want it. The conclusions in the article were accurate for the time it was written, it was objective to all online learners and was well written and articulated. The Scriptures teach us that anyone can learn and be taught. Probverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Characteristics of online learners are similar to everyone in some aspect of life. I have learned that everyone makes their own path, their own goals, and achievements. Reading this article on the topic of characteristics of online learners showed me how I can be a better online student, ask for more out of my time as an online learner, and want more as an online learner. I want to strive to learn more, give more, and ask more questions in my online learning and in my everyday life. I will make my online learning

Another interesting feature of Walden University is their focus on "student-centeredness"--which means that the university seeks to build their curriculum around the work ethic of the students. Students are expected to be self-motivated and are rarely reminded of an upcoming assignments or tests. For some, this may sound like an excuse for professors to be disinterested. For others, especially self-driven individuals, not having a professor breathing down your neck may be a breath of fresh air.
2) What characteristics of success as an online student do you think will be easy for you?
A common misconception in the eyes of the educational world is that online courses are easily passed with minimal effort. In reality, online courses are held to the same standards as in-person courses and require unwavering self-motivation. Professor Rick Rivera expects these higher-learning criterion to be met by the students taking his online English 1C course. In the “Getting Started” module of Rivera’s online course, he provides information regarding his standards by requiring his students to remember that an online course is still a college course, that being actively involved in the course everyday is important, to recognize the qualities of a good online student, and to stay in contact if problems arise.
Technology is developing in new ways every day. We went from just making calls on our cellular phones to surfing the internet and video chatting with someone 2000 miles away anywhere at anytime we want. Technology is advancing in so many ways; we are depending on it more every day for things we did not know could be possible, such as teaching and learning. In Ellen Laird’s article “I’m Your Teacher, Not Your Internet-Service Provider”, Laird lays out her laundry list of disadvantages of being an online teacher. She talks about the ways online students take advantage of taking a class online as to a traditional class. Laird mentions the difference of both online and traditional teaching, “If faculty members, whether well established or new, are to succeed in online teaching, they must be prepared for attitudes and behaviors that permeate Web use but undermine teaching and learning in the Web classroom” (Laird 4). On the other hand, Sugata Mitra talks about technology proudly. In Mitra’s TED Talk “Build a School in the Cloud”, Mitra talks about the great things technology has done. He talks about his research with technology as he places a computer around children that do not speak English. After a couple of months with the computer, the children master how to work on the computer and learn English just by visiting the computer every day. Online classes are rapidly becoming a more popular and accepted option among many students. An online course is a course where all or most course material is delivered online and there is little to no face-to-face contact with the instructor or other students in the class. Although online classes have been around for quite a long while, they have only recently become more popular among students. According to one article on the topic of online education, “6.7 million students enrolled in at least one online course in fall 2011—an increase of more than 500,000 students compared to 2010” (Bird). Another article says that in 2014, “an additional 411,000 students enrolled in their first online course increasing the total number of online students in the U.S. to 7.1 million,” a 6.1 percent increase from the number of students enrolled in the year of 2012 (Vista College). This article also states that “one out of every three higher education students has at least one online course; an all-time high” (Vista College). This recent increase in the popularity of online classes may have been caused because of advances in and increased use of technology, the accessibility and convenience of online classes and the flexibility they provide, and because online classes allow the student to work at his/her own pace.
Learning is done through the acquisition of knowledge or skill through experience, study, or by being taught. To gain or acquire knowledge one needs to be taught by someone who is experienced and has all the knowledge and skill to impact into others. Many students who prefer online education to traditional education lack memory and learning development. Learning practically, and making practical incitation’s and demonstrations helps students have a fair idea of what is being taught in class by their tutors. Online education does not pave the way for students to be active and learn in a broader way. Online education slows down many students and make them inactive.it prevents them from thinking very fast to answer or solve a simple question, because,
Taking classes online is unlike any other learning experience. Students are in total control of their academic destiny. They are able to set their own schedule and generally have more freedom than they would in a traditional classroom. This can be a difficult challenge for many students, so how can they adapt while continuing their education? In order to be successful in an online academic course, adult learners must take the initiative to motivate themselves, set goals, and maintain an active posture in their learning environment.
The use of technology in the 21st century has been spreading very fast, and it is very helpful in our busy lives. We do many things like banking, shopping, and communication using technology in our daily lives. And, the next big thing, which has been growing very fast, is online learning. It is very easy to take online classes via internet. People taking online classes do not go to a college campus, so they do everything from home using technology. Some people think that online learning is not good because it has many drawbacks. For example, online learning involves cheating and lack of class interaction, so they do not want to see it in their education system. On the other hand, other people think that it is very helpful and offers new learning opportunities. However, everyone has a different opinion about online learning, and it depends on how they see it. Online learning is as good as traditional learning because it is very flexible, convenient, and saves money.
Online learning is a modern time invention that was necessitated by the need from the many people who finance education for their own benefit, the working class, the international students and the marginalized class. With online education, one is able to learn more conveniently and undertake other responsibilities with ease (Coates et al 4-7). One does not have to hurry to attend classes since online classes can be conducted from the convenience of home or any other location. This research includes a comprehensive understanding of the current outlook of present online educators in which the applicable implications can be extracted and retained for novice web-based instructors. The problems relating to this research are the various factors that arise in the provision of web-based instruction. These various factors include variables of interest that pertain to particular successes and barriers in which web-based instructors have encountered. For purposes of this research, online and web-based instruction (instructors) will refer only to higher education environments provided through universities and colleges.
In a traditional classroom setting you have set hours in which you can attend, hindering some people from having the opportunity to go to a traditional campus. When it comes to online schooling you have complete flexibility. Of course with this flexibility and freedom comes a price. Online students must be driven enough to complete their assignments alone (Illinois Online Network). Online students don’t have professors or other students reminding them in offhand ways of assignments they have to complete or tests to study for. A good online course should be “a convenient way to receive their education – not an easier way” (Illinois Online Network). This is to say that online courses should be just as engaging and challenging as a traditional classroom setting. They should not be cheat ways for students to float into having degrees. This is a main reason that not all types of classes should be available online.
The last few decades has seen a rapid development in internet and electronic devises industry. At the same time, online learning, as a form of distance education, “imposes itself strongly and becomes a core concern of human thought and modern life.” (Saleem, 2016, p.53). As an untraditional method of education, online learning is very different from traditional ones. Those different make the outcome of online learning hard to be evaluated and examined. However, due to its low cost and high flexibility, online learning can help people achieve life-learning and may have a profound influence in the development of intellectual capital. There is a need to determine the effect of online learning as a form of education to see how it works, and how students learn.
It is a well-known fact that sometimes teachers are not able to respond to challenging questions and students have to look for the answers themselves. When I, as a student experienced the same, I made the decision to learn such topics from internet sources to compliment what we have studied in class. The result was astonishing; even though I haven’t fully studied in the classroom, I could pass my exams successfully. So, I came to the conclusion that online education may easily surpass the traditional, classroom-study one. However, there are some people who believe it is impossible . I have compared both pros and cons of 2 education styles, and detected in which field they will be beneficial, and in which their implementation will cause
