I’m Not Scared: Chapter Questions Chapter 1 pp. 1-41 1. Acqua Traverse has a very farm like setting, with a heap of livestock and things such a vegetables growing. It was a countryside setting. Acqua Traverse is very desolate during the day, only the children venture outside as it is summer and is extremely hot. The adults stay inside during the day to escape the heat. It seems as if most people in Acqua Traverse know each other as well. I feel as if Acqua Traverse is your typical countryside town, it is located in the south of Italy so I know they are not as well off with money but it seems like the population of Acqua Traverse still live their lives to the fullest. 2. 3. Michele’s father tells him that monsters do not exist, and other things such as ghost, werewolves and witches are just nonsense invented to frighten mugs and that he should be afraid of men, not of the things he is afraid of. 4. Michele’s relationship with his mother is quite different to the one he has with his father. Rather than trying to impress his mother like he does with his father, he just tries to please her and make her happy rather than seeing her upset and angry. He saw his mother as a beautiful woman who he respected quite immensely. Michele seems to get along better with his father as his conversations with him are livelier than those between himself and his mother. Chapter 3 pp. 57-67 1. Michele can’t tell his father about the boy in the hole because his father doesn’t give him the opportunity to tell him of the boy. Also his father said if he keeps carrying on the way he does he will send him to the friars, which Michele doesn’t want to happen. 2. Michele notices that the saucepan was exactly the same as one he had at home, one that he and Maria had bought with their mother when shopping at a market in Lucignano. When getting home later that day he searches for the saucepan and discovers that it is missing from their house. 3. Michele imagined that the boy was his brother, when he realised that his father had taken the meat that was leftover from dinner to the boy in the hole. He
CHAPTER 2: There is a talk with Michele and Maria at the start. Michele finds Fillipo, there is a lot of description of Michele finding him. Michele at this point is horrified, he tries to talk to him but gets even more scared. Michele has a second talk with Maria, Michele says he is going to run away from home, but in the end of the conversation he went home. At the end of this chapter you get a very good description of Mama.
She returns to discussing the match with Francesco’s daughter and states that she likes the fact that Francesco has participated in government, even if his positions have not been important ones. This statement conveys how much of a factor status and power were when considering a spouse and the spouse’s family.

The minister then questions her but after his unsuccessful attempt, Mother’s actions become a scandal throughout the town because “any deviation from the ordinary course of life in this quiet town was enough to stop all progress in it” (C670). Junior is very observant and he describes his mother in a detailed way. He deposits emphasis on his mother’s hands. “One thing about Mami, her palms never sweated.” (27) Junior’s mother is a very lovely person, pretty and knows how to take good care of his sons. In contrast, the Puerto Rican woman is described oppositely of his mother. “She had papery hands, and when she rubbed the towel on my chest, she did it hard, like I was a bumper she was waxing.”(35) According to Junior, the Puerto Rican woman is careless and is not lovely as his mother. This increases his disgust towards his father for being with such a woman that will never be like his mother. This fact supports the idea that his son-father relationship is related to the Freud’s Oedipal Conflict.
Loyalty and betrayal occurs frequently in the text. Michelle is loyal to Fillipo, he is willing to break a promise he made “on my fathers head”. He realises the suffering Fillipo endures and forms a bond. He admits openly towards the end of the text that Fillipo “is a friend of mine”. Betrayal is also a prominent theme in the story. To key instances of betrayal occur, the first being Salvatore’s betrayal of Michelle. Secondly we also must view Pino’s betrayal of his family. Salvatore’s betrayal was a heart wrenching experience for Michelle. Michelle is beaten by Felice but it is his heart which hurts most, “Salvatore had broken it”. Some readers feel that Michelle betrayed Pino however it has to be said that Pino despite having the best intentions for his family ultimately betrayed them. He was the one who chose to pursue the kidnapping, he did not serve the family well by engaging in

This highlights the realistic atmosphere prevailing as well as reflects the true meaning of relationship. The readers are exposed to the mother-son relationship. It can be seen that even if the narrator is a twenty-year old law student, he is still the little boy who needed his neck scrubbed from the point of view of the mother. Whatever good advice the son gives, it is not followed and instead he is given a lecture. This is a typical mother-son relationship which shows that no matter how much a child grows, he always remains a little kid for the mother. Moreover, the readers also notice the routine life of the narrator and his mother. The boy used to accompany his mother to work and help her which makes a four-hour job becomes two. There is solidarity, strong family bond and understanding between them because although he did not like his mother
