Immigration During The United States

Immigration has always been a complex issue in the United States. Previous and current administrations have had great difficulties in setting policies and programs in place to address this problem. During the course of American history, laws were enacted to address such issues. There were numerous legislative milestones in regards to immigration in the United States. In order to understand the current issues regarding immigration, we have to look back at the policies that were in place along with the goals that they intended to serve. Then there was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which barred certain laborers from migrating to the United States. Between 1885 and 1887 the Alien Contract Labor also, prohibited specific laborers from immigrating to the US. In 1891 the Federal Government took on the duty of admitting, inspecting, rejecting, and processing all immigrant in search of admission to the United States. On January 2, 1892, a Federal US immigration station opened on Ellis Island in New York Harbor. In 1903 a reaffirmed provisions that were in the 1891Act. The US immigration Act of 1907, reorganized the states bordering Mexico that includes Arizona, New Mexico and a large part of Texas. Between 1917 and 1924 there were a series of laws were ratified to limit the number of new aliens. These laws established the quota system and forced passport requirements. They also expanded the categories of excludable aliens and banned all Asians except the Japanese. A 1924 Act was created to reduced the number of US immigration visas and allocated them on the foundation of national origin. In 1940 The Alien Registration Act required all non-U.S. citizens within the United States to register with the Government and receive an Alien Registration Receipt Card, which was later called a Green Card. Immigration in the United States has been going on ever since the New World was founded and colonies began to settle as early as the 1600’s. Immigrants that came to the new world, some came for a new life and to practice the religion they desire because they were unable to practice that religion in many countries across Europe. Others were brought by force, thousands of African Americans were brought to America for the pure fact of Slavery. America is a true nation of Immigration.

Today the United States is the home to the largest immigrant population in the world. Even though immigrants assimilate faster in the United States than any other developed nations, immigration policy is still a highly controversial issue. The steady increase in the immigrant population in America enrages the natives who think the immigrants take away jobs opportunities, benefit from government benefits unfairly, increase crime and terrorism in the country, and do not integrate into mainstream social and political life which threatens to erase this country’s culture and distinctive character. However, economic theory predicts and academic research confirms immigration has a net positive effect on the natives and the overall economy.

The opinion of many people today, immigration is what has made America. People who immigrate to a new country ace a number of challenging situations and problems in the new community where they live. The problems can be economic, societal and or cultural. There would be no America if not for immigration is what has made America because most of the people in this country are immigrants and from different parts in the world. Countries such as China, Germany, Japan and many others have contributed to the population the United States. Even the oldest populations, the Native Americans from other country. However, some of our neighbors to from South Mexico, many undocumented illegal, flocked to America illegally as a consequence of bad economics and poor living conditions, many Mexican Americans have chosen to come to live in the United States illegally. Those Mexican Americans made the choice because they anticipate freedom and an opportunity for a better life here in the United States of American. Unfortunately some illegal immigrants have paid the price of death, instead of getting their freedom. This has become a growing problem in the United States. Therefore, immigration is good but in this respect, economic, immigrants and society culture can effect on the country population and economy.

In the U.S.’ growing population, not only are the number of Americans growing each day, but also the number of illegal aliens. While immigrants brought a mass variety of races and culture to the U.S., only recently has it become a bigger, more illegal problem. Change needs to happen with this problem for it is illegal and the country knows what is happening. While immigration has been with the U.S. from the very beginning, it’s becoming worse with every year.

The history of immigration runs strong in the U.S because almost all of us are descendants of immigrants. The first major waves of immigrants came around the colonial era, seeking a new life. These colonial era immigrants came to America for economic reasons mostly, or greater opportunities. Though most of these colonial immigrants lived in poverty, working as servants, similar to modern immigrants.

The United States of America, being a country established by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants, legal and illegal, from around the world, come to the United States. These immigrants come because they want a chance at a better life; others are refugees, escaping persecution and civil wars in their home country. While America has long seen and celebrated itself as a nation of immigrants, what was useful in previous generations has potential problems that must be addressed through stricter immigration policies.

Most people think to themselves “why immigrate?” Although there are multiple answers to this question, many people face different challenges in life, and this just might have been what pushed the French and European to settle in the New World. Since the colonial era, America has seen a wave of immigrants migrate in search of freedom and equality. Is this the same immigration today? In my opinion immigration is a problem within the United States, and it desperately needs to be reformed by our government.
