Impacting Global Health
Global health has always been an issue. There are always disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and countries who do not have access to the resources they need. For years, people have been working to get urgent medical care to people who need it most, and also to educate them about basic health and hygiene. There have been many organizations and partnerships who have contributed to the advancement of global health, but the one that stands out the most is the World Health Organization. The World Health Organization has impacted global health by who they are and what they do, what emergencies they have dealt with, and the research they have done. The World Health Organization was founded on April 7, 1948 in Geneva, Switzerland (“World Health Organization,” World Health Organization). They are part of the United Nations and about 193 nations are members (“World Health Organization,” Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia). They employ more than seven thousand people with one hundred fifty offices across one hundred fifty countries (“World Health Organization,” World Health Organization). These people are anything from doctors, to economists, to administrators. The WHO’s primary goal is to promote the achievement of “the highest possible level of health” (Rogers). The WHO defines health as “the state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or
The World Health Organization (WHO) has created an agenda for 2030. Within this agenda there are seventeen sustainable developmental goals (SDG) that aim to transform our world. These goals are to be met through numerous different means, government policies, public change, non-government organizations (NGO) and a variety of other ways. NGO’s are a large way to help meet these goals and impact the world for the better. LRBT, an NGO that focuses on eye care for those who live in Pakistan, focuses on meeting the goal ensuring healthy lives and wellbeing for all at all ages (United nations SDG, reference). Ensuring eye care for the residents of Pakistan not only provides them with care they should be subject too always, but
The World Health Organization, also known as WHO, is a global company that directs and puts into practice international health. There are offices in 150 countries around the world that all work for a common goal. Their main purposes are to promote health, prevent and control disease, and respond to crisis’. The fact that the WHO oversees such a large area, it is extremely important that their website is clear, informational, and accessible to everyone.
In this section of the assignment I will be evaluating the impact of organisations in improving Human Health
The WHO (World Health Organization) is an international agency who provides leadership, protocol, and guidelines, in terms of health, for the rest of the world. They make suggestions for research, then share the valued knowledge that is derived from it. In addition, to setting norms and standards, they also promote health education and monitor for disease control, as well as offering support to agencies that need it. For example, because of Poland and their history with tobacco, the WHO has an office with a program manager for tobacco control in Warsaw, Poland (WHO, 2016). The WHO also establishes
Health is one of the most important areas in globalization. I think every aspect of this area significant to consideration.
Health is a complex concept, and global health adds to this complexity. When I think of health as a concept, I view it as being absent of disease. This understanding is a very biomedical approach to health and is a very narrow viewpoint of health. According to the World Health Organization (1948), health is defined as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (a cited by Jacobsen p. 2). This definition does give a better understanding of what health is from a broader perspective. At the University of Victoria’s Global Health class, I have become to understand better the WHO’s definition and that it is linked to the social determinants of health. In this paper, I will reflect and analyze the learning that occurred for myself while taking the Global Health class, and how this knowledge has helped my nursing practice evolve at the local and international level.
Global health is defined as “health problems, issues, or concerns that transcend national borders” (Institute of Medicine, 1997, p. 2). Koplan (2009) proposed a new definition for global health which he described as an “area for study, research and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide” (para, 7). Global health emphasizes transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions from an interdisciplinary perspective and blends population health and clinical care.
Global health is not a topic we often speak of. In fact, it is mostly forgotten or ignored. But as with any event of international stature, it is important for us to understand and acknowledge. Global health has many facets, and I encourage each of you to find a topic that inspires you. Whether those inspirations be small donations or large movements towards change, find something and let it move you. We overlook the headlines in the news talking about mass genocides or rising HIV epidemics. Why? Because numbers mean nothing to us. When choosing a topic, nothing is more important than remembering that those numbers you are reading about are brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, people. Humanizing these sufferings leads to a connection and empathy.
The features that are important for world health are important us all. One billion people, throughout the world, live on with less than $1 a day. This is staggering. In some countries, you may have one doctor per 50,000 population, and almost no services at all in rural areas. Worldwide children are malnourished and have open sores. Overseas, in underdeveloped countries, people are dying of preventable diseases like tuberculosis, aids, and malaria in numbers that render researchers slack-jawed. There are no boundaries anymore, we're just one short flight away from being exposed to every infectious disease possible. Global health issues are not slowing down, instead they're accelerating.
Thus, finding methods of educating people, and providing medical aid for these preventable diseases can avoid many deaths. Second reason for attending global health issue is for balancing resources. According to The Lancet Journal, ninety percent of the world’s health care resources are spent on diseases that affect only ten percent of the world’s population. (Norris, 2009) Therefore, ensuring that resources are evenly distributed throughout the world would assist to limit the diseases from spreading from country to country. Third, global health can influence Canadians indirectly such as, the increase of diseases. Some of these diseases becoming more prevalent is HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB and are increasing poverty and political instability within countries. (Worldwide HIV & AIDS Statistics, 2009) Thus, global health should be a concern because it can help prevent civil conflict in other countries. (Worldwide HIV & AIDS Statistics, 2009) Fourth, global health should be a concern across all nations as there is more contact amongst people because of globalization diseases occurs at a faster rate. Globalization is defined as a modern phenomenon process by which countries and peoples are increasingly interconnected, integrated, and interdependent that occurred over centuries. (Andrews, 2010) Since the world is increasingly becoming interconnected, diseases can travel from nation to nation and it can cause
The most critical skills to have to be successful while working in the field of global health include empathy, teamwork, and perseverance. First, global health workers need empathy to understand the situation, culture, and values of those with whom they work. Global health workers interact with people of many different backgrounds and cultures; therefore, being able to understand others and show empathy will allow for better interactions for both parties. When a global health worker goes to a new country, the locals view them as foreigners. Some cultures perceive foreigners as intruders and not to be trusted; others are fearful and uncomfortable with foreigners. Understanding the local’s values will help global health workers to not be offended, not overstep, and to show compassion and provide comfort to locals through their traditions. In addition to empathy, the ability to work as a part of a team aid in the success of missions since global health issues can be solved from several directions by people from many different fields. To solve global health issues, we need people working with the government establishing programs and infrastructure, people working in the background acquiring funds and increasing awareness of global health issues, and, of course, people in the field working directly with the locals. It takes many roles working many angles to solve grand global issues; therefore, the ability to work with others is key. Lastly, perseverance is critical to working
At the global level, the Russian Federation, in collaboration with WHO advocates healthcare for all diverse populations around the world. Russia has been a Member State of WHO since the organization’s founding in 1949 and has shared a great deal of history with it. In fact, the Russian Federation is home to 36 WHO centers. Throughout its partnership with WHO, global Noncommunicable Diseases has been a subject of major interest for Russia. In 2013, the World Health Assembly adopted the Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases 2013-2020, which was largely prepared by Russia’s Ministry of Health. In 2011, Russia hosted the first global ministerial conference, which focused on noncommunicable diseases. In 2012, Russia commitment itself to financing the 10-year-budget for noncommunicable diseases offices in different geographical locations (WHO, 2014).

There are many nonprofit government groups that assist with or focus on international issues and raise awareness for international countries that may need assistance. Services that nonprofit government groups assist with can range from supplying water, food, vaccines, clothing, etc. All of this would include the undertaking of their health and assisting with health issues that may rise from not having enough of these items or stuff to live a healthy life style. Many of these organizations are non-profit and only can survive to provide aide and services to the poverty level through charitable contributions. The issue today with the global health care system is that the poverty level is so high that only so much aide can be provide or depending on where aide does need to be provided the resources are simply not available to resources are very limited in order to make any improvement, water contamination is a major issue for many under developed countries and the spread of diseases at times can be very rapid.
