In the 2011 New York Times article titled, “In classroom of the future,” the writer Richtel explains the benefits of technology in classrooms. According to the article, the author described the learning patterns of students improving in various ways by acquiring the skills that are necessary to understand how to use gadgets. Some individuals may argue that a technology based environment could wrongly impact a student's social skills however based on the New York Times article classes that take place on the internet can positively benefit students who are introverts who feel isolated in the traditional classroom. This helped students to assimilate to the technological based culture that we live in today. In the introduction of the NY Times article the author stated, “the children were bent forward on laptops, blogging or creating facebook pages from the perspective of shakespeare’s characters. One student compiled a song list picking a tune by rapper Kanye West to express the emotions of shakespeare lovelorn silvius.” This descriptive scene illustrated in the NY Times article displays the positive impact that the online school can have on the students. Students are advancing their knowledge on how to use technology in a world that primarily uses cellphones, ipads, and computers as their primary means of communication. Another prime example of how online schools can improve student learning more effectively than traditional schools was highlighted by the author when he stated, “Classrooms are decked out with laptops, big interactive screens and software that drill students on every basic subject.” The classroom is decked out with laptops so the students will have continuous educational learning, big interactive screens for students to practice writing. Also, the software that is drilling every basic subject can help the students learn more efficiently and make it stick to their heads. If students are given the …show more content…

One example of how online schools can improve student learning was shown in a study by the SRI international department of education. The researcher Steve Lohr conducted a study on mostly college students from the years 1996 to 2008. The researcher performed a quantitative analysis of online versus classroom performance for the same courses. The results for students taking online courses showed that they ranked in the 59th percentile compared to students who took the same courses in traditional schools ranked in the 50th percentile. These results showed that there was a 9 percent difference in the tested performance of college students which indicated that students learn more effectively in online schools versus traditional schools. This example supports the claim that online schools enhance student learning more effectively than traditional schools. In addition to online schools enhancing student learning it is also beneficial for students in rural areas and for introverted students. Students in rural areas may not be able to afford or have access to transportation which can result in them not being able to attend a traditional school.
