Industrialization During The United States

The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to society in the nineteenth century. With the rise of factories following the Agricultural Revolution and Enclosure Movement, it allowed goods to be readily available to the public due to mass production from having a large and available workforce. This led to further economic growth within the urban areas. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of this economic growth, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were the lack of working conditions, child labor, and horrible living conditions.

Industrialization is a huge aspect of society and especially in America. After the American Civil War in 1861, a lot southern plantation owners were living in poverty because they lost their land. Emancipated slaves were also living in poverty because most them didn’t have a job, but as industrialization grew in America, more people were attracted to the cities up North. A lot of southerners and emancipated slaves traveled up North because of job opportunities. But this proved to be a horrible mistake. Industrialization was an important era where the economy started to develop new machines, factories, and more labor productivity. A time where hand made objects were being replaced by assembly lines and machines. This era started to develop a lot of labor productivity, this made the population increase and made immigrants come from all over the world to work for very long hours and gain very little. This development caused monopolies to be created and take control over labor. It benefited the monopolies because they were gaining a lot of money by their businesses but for the workers it was a disaster because their income wasn't enough to support a whole family. While some people might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive effects for society because there was better business and financial opportunities it was actually a negative thing for society. The Industrialization period of the 1800-1900s helped to shape the world today. This time period during the Industrial Revolution had many types of consequences, both positive and negative. Due to these consequences, there have been advancements in safety, health, and technology. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of better transportation, better housing conditions, less disease, electricity, and new better products, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were child labor, many deaths, diseases, missing limbs from machines, the machines were not designed for kids to work with, dynamite or explosive warfare, big business cartels, deformations, corrupt businesses, less family time, pollution, and poor working conditions.

Women and children were able to join the work force, but for little pay and long hours. Many were face with poor work conditions, hazardous health issues and short lunch breaks. The economic success was often left unchecked by authorities, who were not ready to deal with the consequences of these uncharted waters.

After the Civil War the United States became a much more industrialized society. Between 1865 in 1920 industrialization and proved American life in many ways. However industrialization also created problems for American society. The Industrialization during the 1800’s was a major turning point in America’s history. The events that took place in the 1800’s still effect us today.     During the mid 1860’s America started to change. Railroads were growing faster than ever, factories were popping up everywhere, and the country took its “next step” in its development and industrialization began to occur. Of course like any other thing, it caused a ripple effect on those involved. The development of industries had both great and not so great consequences on those who were impacted. A few of the groups it both helped and damaged were cities, immigrants, and factory workers. There are many causes and effects of America’s Industrialization, some of the main reasons include: migration to cities, improved transportation, and laissez-faire philosophy, while the primary effects generated by these causes include; consumerism, expansion of the market, and changed working conditions.

The period from 1877-1900 mark the years of Industrialization America. Rockefeller, Carnegie, and J.P Morgan were the people that shaped this time period. Rockefeller created the oil company Standard Oil, Carnegie created Carnegie steel, and J.P Morgan was a powerful banker. These successful people brought America to surpass many of the European global powers.

Mark Twain once called Industrialization an, “Era of incredible Rottenness.” Industrialization had both negative effects and positive effects on city life. While big businesses thrived, the gap between the rich and poor grew larger day by day. Progressive reformers sought to close this gap and bring together the nation.

America has been expanding and growing since its birth out of Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution has been an influence in the American life since it first in the 1700s. “Most families did not have enough to sell at the market- they had just enough for their own needs.” Up until the factories started booming and employment rates skyrocketed, people really couldn’t become wealthy and live a decent life. As the ways of farming grew the English at the time began to use up more and more land efficiently. “Unusable swamplands could be drained and used for crops.” That’s absolutely amazing that in this era they could turn swamps into areas to raise more crops so they can naturally make more money at the markets and become a bit wealthier. Farming is one of the most important lively hoods of mankind; no matter what argument anyone tries to make. If we didn’t have farming and agricultural production we wouldn’t have all the different sorts of food products we do, nor would they be as abundant. Life would be like it was before the Industrial Revolution came about and most of us would still be growing our own food and barely scraping by in life.
