Caltex plant was established in South Africa in 1977 after the owners decided to expand its operations in South Africa. The construction of the plant brought controversy over the interested parties, there were two dimensions of the utilitarian benefits of the Caltex plant, and there were violations of the justice and of moral rights whereas on the other side there were possible benefits to the South Africans. The plant setup was helpful in that it provided job opportunities to majority of South African blacks, for their families and dependants. By 1976, American companies in south Africa had employed more than 60,000 people, this ensured that they had something to rely on for their survival, another benefit is that Caltex provided support …show more content…
For the second resolution, that asked Caltex not to sell to the police or military of South Africa, again I will vote for the stand, investments in South Africa were not meant to improvise or innovate on new ways of furthering apartheid; it should stop selling the oil to the forces. This will ensure any expenditure on death, violence, segregation and unwarranted imprisonment is cut down to earth, my vote will be a strong position irrespective of amid protests from other majority shareholders. There are expectations that bureaucracy in the government will maneuver its way to ensure sales to oil the military and police, since the military and the police were the heartbeat of unlawful apartheid, any action separating Caltex from their operations will be a huge boost to the south Africans. For the third resolution, I will vote for the implementation of four tutu principles, though the principles are moderate, they were aimed at blackmailing the government in apartheid by submissions of articles cleverly written, though the clause on unions brings controversy as they may ultimately become political platforms. The managers of Texaco and So Cal should have been human and make resolutions to vote as I would have voted, all human beings are equal and none should suffer on only because the other party has a comparatively advantageous position.
Universal code of ethics should guide each
The vote should remain as is and not be put aside. The employers did not create an atmosphere of confusion or fear or reprisals that would have interfered with the employee’s freedom of choice. Nor was there reason to believe that the employers conduct would tend to interfere with the employees freedom of
Imperialism is when a country extends their control over foreign countries to obtain land that is beneficial to them and this happens in the form of colonies. Many European countries colonized South Africa because of its abundance of many resources that they wanted. The imperialism in South Africa had both positive and negative impacts to different racial groups. While the Europeans benefited the original occupants were oppressed. Through the apartheid, which is racial segregation, black people were separated from each other, they lost political and economic power, and were forcibly removed from their land.
In 1976, in his early thirties Harold Ruttenberg a native of South Africa and a successful businessman immigrated to the United States to avoid the political and economic turbulence within his home country. While living in South Africa Ruttenberg created a thriving retail business, but with the strict immigration laws in Africa he was only allowed to take $30,000 of his net worth with him to the U.S. Upon his arrival to the U.S. Ruttenberg began to settle in California to later realize with his limited resources, properties in that area were very expensive. Therefore, the strong-willed successful entrepreneur decided to move his wife and three children once more to an environment that was more affordable.
Josette’s (Jo) team is attending a meeting with senior stakeholders this afternoon. She has kindly added our issues to the meeting’s agenda and will begin the conversation regarding:
1. If you were one of the board members, how would you have initially voted for the proposal? What would your vote be after the recess in the meeting? Why?
Many of the contemporary issues in South Africa can easily be associated with the apartheid laws which devastated the country. The people of South Africa struggle day by day to reverse “the most cruel, yet well-crafted,” horrific tactic “of social engineering.” The concept behind apartheid emerged in 1948 when the nationalist party took over government, and the all-white government enforced “racial segregation under a system of legislation” . The central issues stem from 50 years of apartheid include poverty, income inequality, land ownership rates and many other long term affects that still plague the brunt of the South African population while the small white minority still enjoy much of the wealth, most of the land and opportunities
South Africa as the name sounds is located at the south side of Africa (CIA). It is about the size of Columbia (CIA). A country that rest between two great oceans, South Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean. Being partially surrounded; West, East and South, by water. It is regarded as the 25th largest nation in the world with a population of 48.6 million people (CIA). The average temperature for the country is warm, in the winter it’s dry and sunny, and in the summer it’s wet, rainy. The country is a diversified society that comprises of various cultures and demographics.
With its subsidiary in South Africa, it is natural for the firm to develop also in this country and to extent its business to close countries and to other emerging markets such as Brazil, India or Asian countries.
I have evaluated and analysed the three options that TideeKleen has in ensuring ethical and corporate social responsibility and my advice is that they pursue Option C. Option A, and B are not viable because they propagate tendencies that are not only immoral but unethical. For example, Option B exhibits certain activities that may risk the lives of the people through the environmental hazards. The Freedom Coast proposal may expose the employees and community members to neurological impairments and risk of getting cancer. Option B cannot be a consideration that TK can opt for under the circumstances. Option A provides the continued stay of the old plan that has serious contamination issues. Option C is the most essential because it also considers the gradual closure of the old plant, while it ensures that employees continue to stay in employment and only faced out through retirement
It’s not a topic that my parents like to discuss with me very often, but I think it’s important for them to tell me about their experiences in South Africa. Of course here in the putrid city of Cleveland, it’s not the same, but it’s better than what I know about South Africa. Now that I’m on that topic, I might as well just tell you about it. My parents told me that in South Africa, you were never sure if there would ever be a “tomorrow.” There was always the constant threat of being hurt for your food or belongings. So that’s why they brought me to Cleveland before birth.
South Africa is situated in the southern part of Africa continent. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by the India Ocean on the south and the east. Also, South Africa borders with 6 countries, which are Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho. The total area of the South Africa is about 1.2 million square kilometers, including the land which is covered with water. It makes South Africa the 25th hugest country in the world, because of the total area. The country consists of 9 provinces, which are different from each other according the size. These provinces are Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape. Gauteng is the smallest and the most crowded province. The biggest one is Northern Cape, which has almost the third part of the population. South Africa has one feature is that this country has 3 capitals. They are Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Pretoria. Cape Town is the legislative capital, because there is country’s Parliament. Bloemfontein is the judicial capital, because the Supreme Court of Appeal is located. The administrative capital is Pretoria. There is a big variety of public service and the Union Buildings are situated there. In Gauteng province there is a city Johannesburg, which is considered to be the biggest and the most important city in South Africa, because it is the heart of the country’s economy.
There has been relatively little criticism of the CSDP. This is generally due to the secret nature of many of the deals, the complexity thereof as well as the long-term deliverables, my point in case the current nuclear deal. Consequently, the South African general public are more often than not informed of the deals at the publicity worthy events such as ribbon cutting ceremonies or grants provided to local industry. Relatively limited information is, however, available about the long-term sustainability and impact of the CSDP.
The only way this nation can move forward, to the benefit of all its citizens, is by eliminating the institutions of capital leeching off of our precious life-blood, the corporations that are truly behind apartheid, and only now seek to cast it aside to seek more subtle methods of slave-mastery. A strong central state with the interests of its workers and most exploited at the forefront of its thought is absolutely crucial. Eliminating apartheid without fighting off the true perpetrators of its extreme injustice would be like freeing one hand from a stockade and proclaiming that we have been liberated. Nor can we collaborate with the gaolers of the National Party and their friends, the manservants of capital, who seek only the maintenance of their streams of easy profits on the backs of cheap Black labor. A nation can only be considered successful when working with all its might to protect its most endangered citizens, for the state belongs to its people, not corporations and banks. The kind of nation I wish to build in the coming months will be dedicated to fighting off capitalistic and imperialistic intrusion on our citizens, ensuring the rights of all workers. Institutions of capital have been fully supportive of the system of apartheid, and all its injustices, and only now forces their agents to the table as profits begin to suffer. Through this process of forming a constitution, I promise to fight in the name of the exploited, and plan to build understanding of the
South Africa is an emerging economy in the global market and like most third world countries it faces economic issues that entail unemployment, inflation and economic inequality that has been exacerbated by the apartheid regime. Using fiscal policy, government through the years has tried to address these key issues that affect the economy and the people of South Africa. Progress has been made but various trade unions have actively come against government policy more often than not demanding a more radical stance towards the policies of the government. Trade unions like COSATU and NAMSU play a major role within the South African economic and political sphere. Acting as advocates for their members, they negotiate on their behalf in order to
The tourism industry is a vast growing trade that in recent years has seen a significant increase in its contribution to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of various respective countries. South Africa is one of the countries that have witnessed tremendous growth in its tourism industry. As much as such development is a very welcomed phenomenon for any country, growth and development is limited by a number of constraints. Of importance to this particular study is the issue of seasonality in the tourism industry.
