Before this assignment , I did not belong to any professional organizations, however, after researching several organizations, I was able to evaluate several professional organizations and compare how each could assist me in advancing my career in Information Technology. In doing so, I realized several ways in which professional organizations can benefit me personally, including, enhancing my professional status, providing me with community outreach opportunities, assist me in “building my brand” by providing social connections, providing access to informative resources and most importantly providing leadership opportunities. Similarly, I was also intrigued by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), which is a professional organization which strives to improve the Information Technology industry by encouraging the evolution, training, and procedures on for both Information Technology professionals and the general public.
Even so, while both of those organizations presented excellent strategies and opportunities for networking and advancement as an Information Technology professional, I chose to become a member of two different groups. The first of these was the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA). BDPA drew my interest for membership because of the organizations focus on diversity for IT professionals. Primarily, I was impressed with the numerous member benefits offered through the NPA including the added value to both my resume and my professional “brand” by establishing a commitment to the ideology of professionalism, competency standards, and ethical integrity. Additionally, the NPA provides for an industry-related conference, symposiums, and correspondence for peer to peer networking, as well as , opportunities to develop leadership skills through active participation on NPA committees and in serving in positions of leadership within chapter governance. By the same token, I was interested in the efforts that the NPA makes to delineate itself as an organization that promotes the value of leadership in the industry. The NPA has established an accreditation standard for IT professionals through their Certified Network Professional (CNP) credential. The CNP is intended for and NPA members that are interested in career development, through demonstration of practical knowledge, prope r qualifications, advanced education, and integrity. If you were to look at the history of technology adoption in business, it would be safe to say that professional organizations aimed at defining industry standards for professionalism are still far behind.
