Henry Lowry History Assignment #1 (Quarter #2) John Marshall is an American patriot who climbed to success through hard-work, determination, and a strong will to protect the constitution of The United States of America. He held many prominent places in American government as well as on front lines of the army defending freedom. John Marshall became the fourth Supreme Court justice for three whole decades, issuing major verdicts on cases that helped to develop, limit, and divide government power. John Marshall was born on September 24, 1755 into the care of his loving parents, Mary and Thomas Marshall. His father, Thomas Marshall, had a very strong relationship with general Washington. This close relationship began to influence his son’s (John) decisions about his stance on the war and if he should join the cause for independence. Washington motivated him to partake in the fight for freedom and liberty from the unjust and tyrannical British Government. The General promoted John to Lieutenant of the state militia in Culpepper County. The militiamen led by John fought in many small battles and emergency instances. They also aided the continental army of Virginia in defeating the British at The Battle of Great Bridge, known as “Little Bunker Hill”. This was a notable battle for the Americans because in it they inflicted a heavy amount of casualties on the British and consequently brought about the independence of Virginia from the lobster-backs. After this battle, John decided to quit the militia and become an actual officer in the continental army. After enlisting, he was assigned to the 3rd regiment of Virginia, serving under Colonel Morgan. John expressed his love of country and true courage, fighting in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Valley Forge. In the Battle of Germantown he was wounded in the hand by shot, as he valiantly lead a charge upon the British.
