Often times an authoritarian leader has full control of those around them, and believes to have complete authority to treat them as they want. An authoritarian leader would provide instructions without looking for inputs and superintend his or her nurses in a close manner. However, problems may arise if a nurse must wait for the manager's decision or direction before taking action regarding a patient. Although the authoritarian leadership style can be viewed as undesirable, it has proved to be very efficient in emergent and stressful situations. One of the key benefits of authoritarian leadership is the fact that decision making becomes much more simple and fast, as the leader doesn't have to consult or convince anybody. Basically authoritarian leadership can work wonders for the organization when decision making has to be quick and during some crisis. In a democratic leadership style, the decision making process and overall responsibility among team members is shared. Decisions are made by the leader consulting each member of the team; therefore the outcome becomes a group effort. In the democratic leadership style, tasks are delegated to employees effectively, where the implementation is mostly in their hands. As opposed to the authoritarian leadership style, the democratic leader welcomes feedback from every team member. Team members are also encouraged to function as a
The democratic style which allows the team to develop options and decide actions may be appropriate for a well trained team who perform at a high level. Leadership functions may be shared with the team and individuals have a greater say in decision making and the implementation of actions and procedures. Advantages of this style may include securing team commitment to decisions and their implementation, which can be an aide to the development of the team and individuals, and increased morale. A democratic leader generally accept any opinion and voices which means that the team would feel free to voice their opinions and ideas without them being dismissed straight away. The positive side to this style is that the team/workforce can be highly motivated, skilled and experienced members can be used in decision making which makes them feel more committed and could less resistant to managerial changes it also help with communication between the workforce and the managers. The negative side to this style is that individuals can dominate participation or make disruptive contributions it can also be very time consuming for the leader because of the two communication it can also result in actions that are the most effective and also people may view this style as incompetent to handle the job responsibilities.
In this essay I will discuss the leadership style of 3 nursing leaders, which I chose from Nursing Leadership DVD (Orazietti & Singh, 2014). I will then describe impact the leaders ' style has on improving nursing care, organizational processes, and inter-professional collaboration. In addition, I will provide some examples of a change process or difficult situation which leaders encountered. Finally, I will explain how I have dealt with difficult situation involving my colleague and one of physician in the hospital department where I worked. Throughout this essay I will analyze what leaders should have done differently. 3 Leaders which I have chosen were Debra Bournes from group 1 because of her political and administrative success, Mina Singh from group 2 because she is renowned for her educational style at York University, and Esther Green from group 3 because she is the sound and knowledgeable practitioner.

Transformational theory further explains leadership must include exhibiting a degree of emotional intelligence. This occurs when perceiving how others feel, understanding how the feelings lead to thinking, understanding the emotions, and managing emotions internally. In respects to this theory, emotional intelligence enhances this bi-directional relationship between the leader and the followers (Spears, 2002).
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Management and leadership are two different ways of organising people and although sometimes used interchangeably, they are two different functions. Management has a strong emphasis on order and control, while leadership has a focus on articulating a compelling vision, which both inspires and guides others to follow (Dignam et al., 2012). In this essay I will critique two styles of leadership, authoritarian and situational. In addition to this, the management cycle will be discussed. I will then identify how the newly graduated Registered Nurse and the nursing profession can use these styles to provide quality patient care.

Every organization has a management team, with the success the organization in the hands of these leaders and managers. How the organization is run is generally determined by the executive leaders and filtered down through a series of positions on an organizational chart. In hospital healthcare, at the end of the chart is the care provided by the nursing staff. The purpose of this paper is to discuss Participative Nursing Leadership (democratic) style, nursing leadership and management theories, and finally this paper will explain what is required of the nurse leader to create an environment for nurses in which the nurse feels gratified and hospital goals are met.
Nurse leaders are faced with issues or problems on a daily basis that are often expected and sometimes unexpected. It “comes with the territory” so to speak. If there were no issues to solve or hurdles to overcome the necessity of designating a leader would not seem quite as important. Nurse leaders can tackle issues that occur in their work environment using nursing theory to guide them. Nursing theory provides a framework that nurse leaders can use to implement interventions or changes to positively impact the staff they lead. This framework of the theory will set the standards for achieving the desired outcomes and is based on knowledge that is gleaned from practice and/or research.
The nurse that I chose to interview and write about received a Bachelor's degree in nursing science approximately ten years ago as well as attended many ongoing training events since her graduation. She is certified as a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and manages the emergency department in a private healthcare facility that employees over fifty people in the division. Generally her schedule consists of the 9 to 5, Monday through Friday however is subject to change based on emergency situations or when she has to fill in for employee absences. Her duties include managing the emergency department and makes sure everything flows smoothly and a large part of her day involves administrative tasks. However, during an emergency or a period in which the ER is short staffed she also has to step in and provide clinical duties. She mentioned that she enjoyed spending time with the patients and missed regular clinical duties and that managing nurses was often more difficult that managing patient care. The nurse said the leadership style that inspired her the most was servant leadership and she tries to incorporate this in her leadership duties as much as possible.
Role models are the foundation of leadership. People are influenced by individuals that demonstrate the characteristics of trustworthiness and respect. This rapport needs to be established between nurses and nursing management. Being a recent graduate myself, I can say a lot of my skills that are being developed stem from the demonstration of my superior coworkers. Nursing management needs to understand the nurses, especially new nurses such as myself, are looking to them for guidance. Nursing administration or nursing management is a broad term that may refer to a number of management supervisory and executive titles including, nurse manager, nurse administration, nursing supervisor, director of nursing, vice president of nursing, chief nursing officer (CNO), so on and so forth. There is an importance for nurse leaders to be up to date on policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives. Healthcare requires nursing leadership professionals to lead a productive and efficient workforce that allows optimal patient care in a medical setting. Nursing leaders have the
This article gives examples of a how a leadership style can be integrated with a culture of peace. The following concepts are the ones this article is based on: creativity, building trust, relational caring, dialogue with time of reflection and meaningful recognition. This article will help me answer my question because it gives several examples specifically on how Nurses leaders have to focus first on creating a culture of peace with patients and coworkers than on science or any other kind of work. I think this is a beautiful example of the priorities a society should have when it comes to interact with others in any kind of situation. It is very important to me to get to understand how a role in a job can construct harmony and not only stress.
Leadership is multifaceted, encompassing many definitions and qualities. “Leadership may be viewed as the process of guiding, teaching, motivating, and directing the activities is the ability to influence others” (Ellis & Hartley, 2009, p. 5). Leadership in the clinical setting has direct association in clinical care while always influencing others to improve the quality of care they provide. Each leader possesses a different leadership style for their particular department. The ability for an individual to provide leadership to others will have a direct influence on how well the unit functions. Therefore, the three nursing leaders that are most influential follow completely different leadership styles, but all have one common goal, which is to improve the quality of care for patients.
