Aldous Huxley’s compelling futuristic novel, Brave New World, takes place in an elaborately constructed society whose citizens have their intellect highly conditioned from birth to be entirely “jolly” [as stated in the text] throughout life merely through superficial fulfillment that the government is able to provide. However, the perpetually gleeful yet blind citizens are stripped of their dignity, compassion, values and morals-ultimately losing their human emotions without the realization that they’ve lost such an important aspect in life. Huxley states, “in a moment, they had all caught up the refrain and, singing, had begun to dance. Orgy-porgy round and round and round, beating one another in six-eight time. Orgy-porgy…” giving emphasis that these actions repeat in extensive, continuous sentences. The repetition of the the word ‘round’ captures the mental instability and insanity of those speaking it. Their strange reaction of hitting each other and dancing round in a nefarious circle was due to the unpleasant action of the Savage, who they were watching contently. As can be seen, they had never seen such distress and utter miserableness, because their life was always so jolly. In final analysis, they never learned to deal with life’s complications and when witnessing crisis, it was incomprehensible. Mustapha Mond (World Controller) believes history revolves around human sentiments, essentially feelings that were once part of the natural human experience. Not only does he disregard history to be of any significance in the utilitarian society, he neglects the lessons history teaches us. Conclusively, the social system really only benefits those who rule it, not those part of it. Members of the economic and social community are stripped of their own identity and individual opinions, being taught hypnopaedic sayings while the truth is being muzzled, chained and hidden.
