Evans pg1 Ta’Hara Evans Wendy Scruggs English III Aug. 3, 2015 Legalization of Marijuana in America Marijuana legalization has been a divisive issue in America for quite some time. Recently, there has been a push by states to legalize the substance and so far 5 states have succeeded to obtain the vote to decriminalize it but the federal government has not budged from its position to keep marijuana illegal. They have so far turned the other cheek and have not interfered in the states’ decisions but have not offered any promises or guarantees that they would never interfere. Marijuana should be federally legalized due to the waste of money and resources to arrest and prosecute users for possession of a substance that causes less problems than …show more content…
One of the most prominent opposing viewpoints are the medical risks of marijuana. The potency of marijuana has more than doubled from 1993 to 2008 (well.blogs.nytimes.Rabin). This increase in potency concerns health professionals as it pertains to young marijuana users and how it affects developing brains. The legalization of marijuana can give young people a false sense of safety. They can assume that if it’s sold in a legitimate store, that it must be safe to use, which is not always the case. The substance contains addictive properties and even in the states that have legalized it for medicinal and recreational use, have not instituted a comprehensive testing regiment to ensure the safeness of the drug. Without federal recognition, the FDA does not involve itself in ensuring the ingredients and purity of the …show more content…
The health concerns of marijuana, while valid, are no more serious than that of cigarettes, alcohol or a lot of other legal drugs on the market. People in today’s society have widely accepted the use of marijuana, as evidenced in the passing of state laws allowing recreational use. The tax revenue created and money saved by using resources in other areas, gives the states huge financial rewards. Also, the disproportionate criminal penalties that minorities suffer due to marijuana laws are relieved by legalizing the drug. The benefits greatly outweigh the concerns of marijuana use. The truths about marijuana are slowly starting to resurface, the government keeps ignoring that cannabis could one day be as powerful for the U.S. Unfortunately, these truths about marijuana are under a lot of criticism because of the stereotype of what people see as a "marijuana or cannabis smoker." There is a great difficulty in this law because marijuana is still recognized as a harmful and dangerous substance in some states. This can cause problems because each state has their different views and opinions on the matter, and have their own rules and how the rules apply towards it. The twenty-six states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form, but California, Massachusetts, and Nevada just passed the law for recreational use. The states that have medical marijuana and recreational legalization are Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Alaska. The states that only have medical marijuana legal are Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii (Ingraham). However, legalizing marijuana could have some benefits instead of being a drug with some bad reputations. Marijuana should be legalized because of medical reasons, safety reasons, and have some benefits to society.
Those who disagree with the legalization of marijuana across the United States state various concerns regarding its potential for negative side effects, such as causing addiction and deteriorating cognition (Loflin and Earleywine 293-296). Nonetheless,
For the last century there has been an abundance of false information being spread about the drug marijuana. Even in commercials on television, misleading facts about the drug have been presented to the audience. Some misconceptions about the drug include its potential to cause addiction, the damaging of brain cells, genetic damage, violent behavior, and damage to the immune system. These misconceptions, which have plagued a large percentage of the population into thinking that marijuana is a bad drug, have caused many set backs in the process of gradual legalization. The dispute over the legalization of cannabis sativa, more commonly known as marijuana, is one of the most controversial issues ever to take place in the United States. Its use as a medicine has existed for thousands of years in many countries across the globe. Legalization should be considered despite efforts made by groups who say marijuana is a harmful drug that will increase crime rates and lead users to other more dangerous substances. The legalization of marijuana can improve our society by helping with our economy, freeing legal resources, and benefiting the overall health of the nation though medical uses.
Legalization of marijuana is an important issue; most people recognize it as “harmful and addictive,” from the essay “Marijuana Should Not Be Legalized,” while others regard the ban on marijuana as ineffective, expensive, and unjust (1). According to Senator Bernie Sanders, “too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use. That’s wrong.” The ban is unjust for Americans because it is a complete waste of our tax dollars to continue criminalizing citizens for marijuana use. Legalization of marijuana in every state will be beneficial; for our economy, medical value and breakthroughs, lowering crime rate, aiding people who are victims of drug abuse, and more. The following paragraphs will explain further.
The legalization of marijuana has been a topic of debate for many years. This may be because of the cultural diversity that the United States of America is known for. Recently, bills were passed in Colorado and Washington to implement the legalization and regulation of recreational marijuana use. These events along with the ever growing popularity of the drug in society, media, and entertainment are proving to be more than anti-marijuana advocates can handle. In this paper, I explore the financial, social, medical, and political benefits of legalizing marijuana.
The United States of America stands as one of the leading territories in the consumption of forbidden
Marijuana legalization has been a topic of interest for many years in this country. How to regulate it? Tax it? Where it can be used? By whom? How old? Who can sell it? Federally legal or locally legal? The penalties involving it? All of those are questions that have been debated about and fought over in courts of law. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been jailed for minor crimes involving Marijuana. It has many proven benefits both economically and medically. The times are changing and prohibition against marijuana is starting to fade away. Although still illegal federally, it is now fully legal in eight different states, and medically legal in thirty! This is great progress, but still isn’t enough. Marijuana will soon be legalized. There is plenty of benefits and I am fully for the legalization of marijuana nationwide.
Throughout America many people believe marijuana should be legal because it's not bad for you. There are many different theories about this conflict. There are also those people who believe that marijuana is the gateway drug, the drug that takes you to more drugs. This drug can take your life in a heartbeat.
Federal government needs to be less involved with the daily lives of Americans. Each state should be allowed to decide on whether or not to legalize marijuana and under which grounds and statutes its use should be regulated. The only reason the Federal government should step in is to decide whether to tax it at a medical or recreational rate.
Ever since the beginning of the formation of the United States, we have been evolving to better include everyone. But in late years I am seeing a lot of separation mostly from race. When the Constitution was formed I believe it was more intended for white immigrants coming from Europe, but they did not specifically state this. I do believe they thought heavily about the future and potentially thought about a country full of diversity all getting along.
Based on biological research, statistics of drug use amongst children and youth and the health effects on regular users of marijuana, this paper will argue that marijuana should remain illegal in the United States for recreational use. Arguments for the legalization of marijuana and arguments against the legalization of the drug will be discussed throughout the paper. It will address the biological effects of the drug on the human body, the current laws in place and the effects it has on children, adolescents and adults.
Many college students are in favor of the movement. Adults that grew up when marijuana was not strictly regulated are also in favor of its legalization. In general, campaigns for the legalization of marijuana focus on misinformation about the drug and appeals to the frequency of its use. They claim that governmental agencies have exaggerated the negative effects of consuming marijuana. Studies on marijuana use are offered as evidence that the drug is not as dangerous as the government claims. In addition, supporters of the movement list all of the benefits—financial and otherwise—of legalizing the plant. Increased tax revenue and decreased violent crime are two proposed results of legalizing marijuana. Another important aspect of the movement to legalize marijuana is the abundance of personal stories to serve as evidence. The government can provide an abundance of information about the drug and make claims about the dangers of its use; however, many people have been consuming the plant for years. Their lives serve as evidence that the drug does not pose significant short-term risks. For the users that have an even longer history, they can serve as evidence of the long-term safety of the marijuana plant. Young people are then faced with a dilemma. They can either listen to the warnings of government agencies or listen to the many personal stories of experienced
The legalization of medical marijuana has been a controversial topic in the medical world for many years. Currently twenty-nine states have passed a bill where some sort of medical marijuana is legal. So why haven’t all states jumped on the majority bandwagon? Many believe that marijuana is a gateway drug and that it can lead to other more dangerous drugs, but for medicinal use it has many useful effects. Several studies have been done to determine the uses marijuana can have on diseases, pain and even psychological disorders. Legalizing medical marijuana not only has many positive medical effects, but it can also be used to help our economy and cut down on drug related crime.
Marijuana should not be legalized because it will increase health issues, its use will rise rather than decline, and taxation will result in economic failure. In recent years, however, society has become very moderate, and this is why society’s views can be swayed by the benefits of legalization. Nowadays, legalizing marijuana is not that big of a deal as it was in the 60’s and 70’s when hippies and peace organizations were advocating for marijuana use. However, if marijuana is legalized it has been said that it might be the gateway drug to legalizing all illegal drugs.
