Humans have been using medicine to salve our wounds, physical and mental, since near the beginning of our species. It is something we used throughout the ages though we haven’t always used the same means achieve it. Good Morning/Afternoon, Ms Hall and my fellow classmates. My name is Dakota Summers-Hime and today, I would like to talk to you about why medical marijuana should be legalised in Australia. Before I go any further, I want to take the time to tell you what Medical Marijuana actually is. Medical Marijuana refers to marijuana being used to treat or relieve a symptom or condition. It is a medicine which can be used to treat some of the world’s worst conditions, including cancer, epilepsy, AIDS, Glaucoma and Multiple Sclerosis.

When we imagine the uses of marijuana, we see the dazed hippies of the 1960s and 70’s, but really the first written record of cannabis goes back to 2727 B.C. by Chinese Emperor Shen Nung and it has been dated through almost every historic time. Not only was cannabis used for recreational and medicinal properties, but hemp was also used for cloth and textiles, paper, soap and hygiene products, food, and even industrial products such as fuel. Marijuana is not just the idolized drug mentioned in countless songs and movies that we tend to dismiss as just a joke. It appears in our daily life in various ways mostly to eliminate it, but recently it has become a more controversial topic with the legalization in some states. The debate to end the prohibition has gone into the recent presidential campaign and with the knowledge of Colorado’s recent change to legalizing marijuana we can know evaluate the evidence. The Federal Government should legalize marijuana across the country because of the economic benefits, the societal impacts, and the economical effects.

Have you ever heard people saying, smoking weed can kill your brain cells or smoking weed is a gate way drug? People also will say that “once you do Pot that you will need to move on to harder drugs like LSD, Heroine, and Cocaine to get the same "thrill". Sounds good, but it just isn't so” (Perkel). Over the years Marijuana (cannabis) used to be illegal and deemed as harmful to our system. In today’s society, marijuana is now legal and used for medical purposes in twenty –three states including DC. This type of marijuana has advance tremendously in medicine because of its health benefits.

Marijuana is one of the most universally known drug that is composed from cannabis. However, it is the least potent form of cannabis that obtains a green, brown or grey mixture of dried, shredded leaves, flowers, stems and seeds from the hemp plant cannabis sativa. There are over fifty cannabinoids in marijuana but the primary psychoactive constituent is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol which is also referred as THC. THC is the component that is illegal and is the main mind-altering intoxicant that causes individuals to “get high” (Australian Institute of Criminology, 2015). Marijuana is currently more potent contrary to historical times because there are growing techniques and selective use of the seed therefore, increasing the strength of the drug.

In 2005 approximately 216,000 individuals made emergency room visits involving the use of those numbers have increase substantially. Would you believe me if I told you that those numbers have increased by about ten present, or how about fifteen percent? In 2013 the visits to the emergency room that where marijuana related had more than doubled, that is about 461,000 individuals per year. Just think, what if you listened to people that say its fun to smoke, or that it doesn’t do anything corrupt to your body. You could be the next person to not make it out of the emergency room. I believe that marijuana should continue to be illegalize in the United States.

The use of medical marijuana for treatment purposes easily rises controversies among the American public. Depending a patient’s situation, people debate whether marijuana is legitimately suitable. Thanks to social media and resource publications, people are exposed to most of marijuana negative effects. I personally believe that marijuana should be permitted to be used on patients that need urgent care. We are in a healthcare generation full of new knowledge and procedures that would astonish previous healthcare professionals from previous generations. I believe that health scientist should continue to study the use of medical marijuana’s and introduce its safety and reliability to the public.

Every time you hear the words smoking marijuana what is the first thing that comes to your head? Maybe your first thought is that’s gross or what productive person does that? A lot of people have the notion that marijuana is just for the main purpose to make people “high” (a feeling of high attitudes and euphoria) that is why it is still considered an illegal drug in some states. Today I want to inform you that this natural drug is doing miracles for people with many serious health diseases. There are over 420 diseases that medical marijuana has improved these patients live for the better and many people have come to agree that this natural plant is actually a secret drug to happiness.
