The United States Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, to strengthen the naval forces in the Revolutionary War. Captain Samuel Nicholas set up the first recruiting station in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is the birthplace of the Marines. Although missions may change over time, what will remain constant is their unchanging commitment to protecting the lives of American citizens and the interests of the United States of America. Their purpose is to be this nation's rapid response force; they are called to be "the most ready when the nation is least ready." From relief efforts to combat operations from the air, land and sea the Marine Corps is ready to answer the nation's call. (marines.com)
The Marines have three major impacts: National, Worldwide and Community. Marines have fought in all of America’s wars and conflicts from the American Revolution to the War on Terrorism. They are the America’s first line of defense. They are the most efficient and effective response option when unexpected threats face America. The United States Marine Corps maintains a constant state of being prepared. "The American people believe that when a crisis emerges, Marines will be present and will invariably turn in a performance that is dramatically and decisively successful—not most of the time, but always. The investment in the Marine Corps continues to be an investment in the character of the young people of our country." (General James F. Amos, 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps)
