Mechanical Engineering: Working At The Navy Surface Warfare Center

Through a partnership with Northrop Grumman, I develop my own projects with mentorship from a team of engineers. During my junior year, I utilized Java Eclipse and Android to develop and copyright a mobile application that digitized my high school’s school map, making navigation much easier for students. Due to my spectacular performance, Northrop Grumman offered me a paid summer internship. In collaboration with a team of my peers and the public works superintendent of the Fairfield Waterworks facility, I built a robot capable of diagnosing cracks and leaks in water main pipes. Over the summer, I also attended an eight-hour workshop about soldering electronics. This project garnered several awards at the Ohio State Technology and Engineering Showcase. Now, I am currently developing a low-cost Arduino-powered smartphone with WiFi capabilities.

The men who served in the 82nd Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II may have thought they achieved very little but their accomplishments helped in winning the European Theatre of Operation. Ever since I was little I always wanted to know machinery in small objects only worked the way they were design but didn't work in a different form from original manufacturing. What attracts me about Copper Union is that this school has everything available to answer my question. A very competivative working environmnet like that at Cooper Union is the type of environment that strive in to become a better person, someone who achieves what they original thoughout was not possible. By studying mechanical engineering at Cooper Union, I feel that I have a chance to become someone who is able to design new technology that can be easily be manipulated by anyone who desires the machinary to do something

The United States Army Corps of Engineers has built a number of dams within the United States. The Bonneville Dam and other dams along the Columbia River provided local citizens with jobs during the Great Depression and hydropower after their construction. These dams assisted in powering the Manhattan project during World War II. The Turtle Creek Dam, as it sat in 2005, was susceptible to failure if a substantial earthquake were to strike. The Corps of Engineers was contracted to upgrade this dam. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers developed a reputation of excellence throughout their existence.

The Tennessee Army National Guard was officially recognized in 1796 when Tennessee was admitted as the 16th state (Tennessee Blue Book, n.d.). Tennessee became known as the volunteer state because of the National Guard. In 1780, Colonel John Sevier sent out a request for 100 good men to fight with him and 200 men volunteered. President James Polk sent a nationwide call for 50,000 volunteers to fight with Mexico. Tennessee only had a quota for 2600 volunteers, but 26,000 men volunteered from Tennessee.

Ships have been around for thousands of years, we used them to conquer other countries, to transport food and people, and for our enjoyment. We always need someone to make sure that those ships are running perfect and that it will make it home safe. Those people that work in the ships are called Marine Engineers they are the ones that make sure the ships will make it home. Even though we have been making bigger and better ships we still look back at the older ships and how the Marine Engineering program began.
