One of the biggest negative affects of social media is cyber bullying. Over the past couple of years bullying has increased highly because of social networking. The media allows you to post your opinions on how you feel. Often these opinions are towards other people or places. This is a huge problem because social networking is fast growing and so is cyber bullying as well. When you think of bullying you immediately think it’s just the younger generations doing it. But you would be surprised on how many adults today take part in cyber bullying. Many people want to be heard and feel superior. Which is why they bully over the media because it is shown all over the world to be seen.

Social media has become a very prominent part of everyone's life, irrespective of the age group. While social media is very helpful and it is a necessity in everyone's lives, whether it has a positive or negative effect is a debatable topic. How does social media negatively impact our society? Here’s a story about a 14 year-old-girl named Hannah Smith who’s from Lutterworth, England. Hannah was bullied by anonymous participants online who influenced her to drink bleach and cut herself, she was subjected to cruel taunts and was being insulted about her weight. Due to the bullying online, Hannah committed suicide. According to Laid “More than 4500 kids commit suicide each year due to social networking” (Laid 1).Social media has a negative impact because it increases the chance for someone to get bullied, causes lack of studying which affects grades and leads teens to get diagnosed with a mental disorder.

For my personal project, I chose the topic of social media. My goal for this assignment is to elaborate on the sociological effects social networks have on us. I believe my goal will push me to explore something new because I’ve never really paid too much attention to what happens beyond the screen of a computer or smartphone. I chose the topic of social media because it’s relevant and it’s something everyone of us has experienced in some way. My experience with social media is similar to experiences of any average teenager, who uses social networking to stay connected with his/her friends. There are many types of social media networks ranging from Facebook to Instagram. There are also positive and negative views of each platform, including notifications about events and cyber bullying. On the positive side, social media is being used to keep in contact with old friends and family that are not close enough to where you get to see them occasionally. You can send messages and even video chat without leaving the comfort of your home. You can also meet new people who share the same interests and find dates. On the negative side, users are able to use social media against you and bully you over the internet, which is called cyber bullying. Social media companies are always coming out with new features and being up to date to prevent such things. As there many social media platforms, there are some positives, as well as some negatives about each of them.

However, there are still good consequences that come from the use of social networking.

The effects of social media can be discouraging if you always are on it and compare yourselves to others. Most people view social media as uplifting, but if you get deeper into studies it shows. “ Cyberbullying has become a major issue for teenagers in more recent years, as it allows its victim's "friends" to post things in front of their peers,” (Psychology 2). The distractions of social media are apparent. For example, “Forty-four percent admit to allowing social media to divert their attention from in-person interactions,” (Digital 1). Social media drags you down and causes people to compare themselves and judge another for as simple as one picture or a few words.

There is no doubt that social media has greatly impacted our society. Though, it is questionable whether that impact has been helpful or harmful. Social media can be useful, though it has been proven to cause self-centeredness, loneliness, and sadness. Also, the rise of social media lead to the invention of cyberbullying, and using social media can be risky. This topic is important because if society continues to overlook these factors, the results could be disastrous.
