Mining: Air Pollution and Twin Lake

“Instead of approaching the problem in a competitive as distributive bargaining (claiming value only for one), the integrative negotiation the parties adopt an attitude aimed at solving the problem and seek a favorable outcome for both” (Business Blog Review, 2011).

Negotiation is a fundamental form of dispute resolution involving two or more parties (Michelle, M.2003). Negotiations can also take place in order to avoid any future disputes. It can be either an interpersonal or inter-group process. Negotiations can occur at international or corporate level and also at a personal level. Negotiations often involve give and take acknowledging that there is interdependence between the disputants to some extent to achieve the goal. This means that negotiations only arise when the goals cannot be achieved independently (Lewicki and Saunders et al., 1997). Interdependence means the both parties can influence the outcome for the other party and vice versa. The negotiations can be win-lose or win-win in nature.

The environment, and recreational activities that are essential to the outdoors, have also been negatively impacted by this system for allocating water rights. The issue of whether or not this system is equitable towards environmental protection has been raised because environmental organizations typically do not have the same funds as other entities, such as cities and towns, oil, gas, and energy companies, and manufacturing. Furthermore, as Jones and Cech point out, “environmental concerns continue to be underrepresented in Colorado water law and policy” (p. 712). This has created a situation similar to agriculture, where environmental concerns become second thoughts to those of M&I, giving rise to environmental issues across the state. These environmental issues can have an effect on residents throughout Colorado, from anglers who enjoy healthy streams and rivers for fishing, to kayakers and rafters who need flowing rivers to recreate

In the county of Waukesha lies a small city of the same name where there have been several issues with water. These issues, tainted / polluted groundwater, have led to the city’s need of Great Lakes water, specifically from Lake Michigan. This seems like an easy fix, however the Waukesha County and Wisconsin government is still a bit weary to allow all of Waukesha Lake Michigan water. Waukesha citizens see this issue as being “but a drop from the gigantic Great Lakes bucket.” There are several reasons why the government will not allow water from the Great Lakes to Waukesha, but also several good examples of why they need the water. The City of Kelsey is in the process of undertaking a sustainability plan for its water system due to the increase of its residents. The efforts of this project rest on the communication and teamwork with addressing issues and concerns from the mayor of Kelsey. The following paper will discuss the concerns that Kelsey’s mayor has with the methods utilized in building effective relationships with teamwork among city employees and with the motives and values with building teamwork. The paper will describe the communication factors that need to be considered that will have leaders and stakeholders in one accord with the implementation of the water plan. The leaders and stakeholder also have to be in agreement with the tax increase to support the project. Additionally, the paper will discuss the positive and adverse effects of how communication gets handled as well as the leadership methods that will motivate stakeholders. Last, the paper will discuss how the mayor may address performance inadequacies and still maintain a productive organizational structure.

This research will be about concern about the pollution of Lake Macatawa, in Holland Michigan, which is leading to a clean-up effort. Preliminary research has led me to a lot of information through government regulations and newspaper articles. Because the funding for the cleanup of this lake will be done with public money, it makes sense that it would be discussed in the local paper, The Holland Sentinel. The Sentinel has a few stories, both about the cleanup through public funds, and the stories that began to rise a little bit more recently, the funding through private donations.

There is a common bond throughout Kentucky that stretches from western to eastern state lines that unites many Kentuckians. This common thread is coal mining. Window decals proudly proclaiming “Coal miner’s daughter”, “friend of coal” license plates, and yard signs declaring “Coal keeps the lights on” are only a fraction of the coal mining propaganda frequently seen throughout my community. There is an allure to being a coal miner not only because it is a high paying job that does not require a college degree, but also because being a coal miner evokes a sense of pride within people. However due to the occupational hazards and coal’s impact on the environment, coal mining also poses as a very real environmental health issue for not only my community in western Kentucky but the entire state as well. This research paper aims to describe coal mining as environmental health issue, explain the potential health risks of working in and living near coal mines, identifying regulations and laws concerning the issue, describe the industry’s response to this issue, describe my community’s response to this issue, and identify needs and nursing interventions required for affected aggregates.

Other case studies reviewed in this paper are about rural communities in the midst of environmental occurring in specific material places. The Klamath Basin differs in many respects because water has its own set of legal precedents which are different than those of public lands, and the Klamath Basin is home to many heterogeneous communities.

The mining industry in the United States has a long history beginning in the 1600s when iron ore was mined in Jamestown and sent overseas to England (Bolles, 1879). Often in this century it is easy to forget where the energy one is utilizing came from or where the metal which makes items people use every single day come from. Unfortunately, with obtaining necessary metals and coal comes the risk of accidents and the different ethics involved in the industry in order to keep not only workers safe but keep the environment safe as well.
