My Literacy Experience

In my opinion, literacy is the foundation of education. To be a reader or writer can encompass a broad definition. It can range in meaning to describe a child who is just learning the sounds letters make when joined together to form a word, to a description of a poet, music producer, and so on. My experience with reading and writing began with the love of my mother, and grew from my continual interest and fascination for greater knowledge.

From a young age, I have always been taught to understand the value of education and learning. Reading and writing have been emphasized to me as tools for success, that should always be constantly improved, for as long as I can remember.

I have acquired many literacy opportunities throughout my literacy life my parents, grandparents, and teachers ,I hold them very close to my heart because if it wasn’t for them pushing and encouraging me to read and write I wouldn’t be the literate person I am today. I bear a huge family so there are always many voices going through my head so it wasn’t long until I started speaking, as well as comprehending what all these strange words meant recognizing the words was very difficult before I started practicing them. My parents always encouraged me to read and write in a way no child can resist with toys and candy who could say no to that. Every chance they got to help me read they would read with me. I wasn’t forced to read on my own because I didn’t know how.

My first experience to literacy came as a young adult. I have always been reluctant with my education, because of the family problems I experienced growing up. The harsh treatment our family received growing up made it very difficult to study in school, my body was physically in class but my mind was not. The trials and tribulations I went through growing up as a kid continued throughout my teenage years. Dropping out of high school I believe brought upon literacy difficulty. At the age of twenty-three, I finally had enough of feeling undereducated. Living in my mother’s basement with no job and an 8th grade education, the walls started to close in on me as my frustration became greater by the minute.

Literacy plays a huge role in many people’s lives everyday, whether it is learning how to read and write for the first time or writing a five-page essay for the hundredth time. We experience literacy differently and have our very own unique stories on how it has impacted our lives and had made us who we are today. It is an essential aspect that I use in my everyday life, such as in relationships, daily interactions with others, and learning. It has become such a powerful aspect and human right in which it allows one to speak his/her mind and in some cases express their opinion to the world. My personal literacy history has shaped me into who I am today because without my experiences I would not have been able to gain the confidence and

As I think what literacy means to me, the most important thought that comes to mind is my understanding of it: the ability to read and write, I feel that without the ability to read and write, mankind is unable to properly function because there is no foundation for adequate communication. So literacy is reading development, a progression of skills that begins with the ability to understand spoken words and decode written words, and culminates in the deep understanding of text. Everyone has some moment which have the potential to influence the craft of understanding that directly has the undying impression for the lifetime. As for learning process which comprises the reading and writing aspect, there comes events that helps people to grasp the authenticity of learning which turn out to be moments of learning for some people in a very inspiring and motivating manner. In this essay I will talk about my literacy history and how it has been developed throughout portions of my life.

Literacy plays a huge role in my daily life. Every single day I read and write. Whether it’s writing an email or reading a text message, class assignment, discussion board, etc. My literacy journey is unique because I have had different experiences. As a result, this is how my literacy journey has let me to be the reader that I am.

One of the most eye opening experiences of my life occurred in the second grade. I would have never thought that doing one simple assignment in elementary school could change my whole perspective on literacy. My understanding of literacy was sparked when I had read my first real book. I remember sitting down on the vividly colorful carpet day dreaming about playing Mario Cart on my Nintendo 64 while everyone was obediently listening to the teacher read a book out loud. It wasn’t that I did not know how to read or listen, I just didn’t care. Reading to me used to be tedious because I did not understand the purpose of it. I did not grow up with the luxury of my parents reading to me because they weren’t literate in English, so I had to figure out for myself why literacy is vital in everyday life. My ongoing learning experience with literacy can be traced back to one simple visit to library.

If you were to ask me what literacy meant to me when I was younger I would tell you, that it represented reading a book, and simply writing. The first thing that would come to my mind is English, reading and writing is what I do when it comes to that subject. Being young I was never taught the true meaning of literacy, and if you’re anything like me, you would eventually have to just learn on your own. Growing up I rarely thought what literacy truly meant, yet growing up it was a question I was always curious about, because this is when my writing became more serious. The more I began to write essays, the more it seemed to bother me. I asked myself, how could I truly write a good paper without knowing the basic true meaning of it all?

For as along as I can remember, literacy has always been incorporated into my daily life. More specifically, an assignment that stand outs above all was my Graduation Project. The assignment was strung out over a course of one and a half school years due to the excessive amount of work and editing process required to complete the undertaking. The Graduation Project was lengthy, citation filled, and an edit worthy task. This was very difficult to me due to it being my first exposure to such a detailed assignment. Along with the paper, I had to complete an interview, volunteer hours, a presentation, product, and several forms of documentation. The essay opened my eyes to new important features such as the length of the paper. This is because it was the longest paper I have ever written. It was also a new experience to properly citing a paper. The last important task that stood out was the editing process because of the multiple drafts that I had to complete. Overall my

To be literate, is not just the ability to recite and inscribe. It is something I think more than that. It involves a very intricate mechanics of linguistics, but eventually forms a sophisticated yet beautiful form of language usage. I was not born with literacy sense. I gained reading skills from bedtime stories from my parents and eventually learned formally to read and write at school. From that, I was able to mold my style of writing with the help of the teachers. I believe that most of us have been through a similar experience as I did in attaining literacy. Even with the majority of the necessary literacy skills I gained from school and at home, I was still wondering the reason behind all the hard work to read and write. Until one day, I was sent to a leadership camp as a representative from my school. From that camp, I knew that all of my gained literacy has now made sense to me because it has changed my perspective of the world through literacy.

Do you think I gens would be ready for what is expected of them? Yes, I gens would be ready for what is expected of them. What mastering literacy skills look likes is reading as well as using media and technology. The skills also help create knowledge through writing as well as a developing media and technology”. Mastering literacy skills is important because if you don't master literacy skills you wouldn't be able to gain knowledge by reading as well as using media and technology. That is what mastering literacy skills look like.

Imagine yourself in the Hunger Games, you need your tools in order to survive, right? Well think of reading and writing the exact same way, it’s essential. Your education is something no one can take away from you. Anyone can take away materialistic things, but knowledge is something that over the years grows inside you and helps assist you in all different types of situations. So never take that for granted.

Learning to read and write, or getting an education in general, is something that is easily handed to us in the world today. Imagine living in a world where you were expected to be uneducated, illiterate, and stupid. In the texts “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie and “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass, these young boys grew up in different worlds where they were looked down upon and were expected to fail due to the standards they grew accustomed to. Although Douglass and Alexie underwent contrasting hardships on their educational journey, they both shared the realization that learning to read and write was both a curse and a blessing. With those shared
