Rounding It Off
(An Analysis of the Favorite Texts from the Second Semester)

As I start to finish my final projects of my high school career, I am beginning to reflect on the many things that I have accomplished this year. One of the biggest things was getting through McGee’s reading list for the semester. As I did my last Parent/Teacher packet, I noted all of the texts that I would have to read before I graduated and let me tell you, it was more than a few. However, I am thankful that I completed this task in its entirety because I now have knowledge of a few texts that really stood out to me and taught me a message or lesson. Wordsworth questions the amount of recognition that nature gets from people in today society. He almost uses a guilt trip method to make his reader ask themselves if they have given nature the tribute it deserves. When I was assigned to read this text, I found myself so wound up in school and activities and busy work. So much so that I hadn’t had time to enjoy things around me and the things out the window or under my feet. “Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers: little we see in Nature that is ours; we have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!” (page 790, line2) This text approached me at a perfect time to help me to step back and appreciate the small things that surround me each day. Senior year can be overwhelming more than once and it is always a refreshing breath to stop and smell the roses, metaphorically and literally. H. Lawrence. This story was of a boy who hid a hobby from his parents and found himself in a fatal situation. At first he hadn’t a clue at how bad his condition would get. He would enjoy betting on horses that would win a horse race and win mounds of money. The boy quickly turned his earnings into profit for his family. ‘”Of course,” said the boy, “I started it for my mother. She said she had no luck, because father is unlucky, so I thought if I was lucky, it might stop whispering.”’ (page 1255) With this decision, he felt obligated to continue his job to generate revenue. I was able to relate to this story because of the fact that my parents and I do not have the strongest relationship, just like Paul was rather distant from his superiors. My reasoning isn’t the same a Paul, so my story most likely won’t end the way Paul’s did. Clearly, Rocking-Horse Winner by D. H.
