This week, one of the roles I observed was a communicator. Right from the start, during the handoffs, my nurse communicated with the other nurse to learn how to best care for the patient. She had taken care of most of the patients that she had during the clinical the day before, so she knew who they were and what the patient needed during the day. The care given by a nurse can aid in healing, or cause major damage. In every different setting that we find nurses, the roles they fulfill are very demanding. While nursing care is the same in the basics, every department has different demands placed on nurses. We are going to look at the differences and similarities of the role nurses play in the emergency department and in the intensive care unit.

Being a communicator is also a role-played that is essential to the community. Effective communication is what will bring everything into place, and improves outcomes in their healthcare environment (Sharon ¶6). Furthermore, playing a role as a teacher is another, which requires communication with the patients, gaining knowledge about their health and medications ensuring that the patient knows and will not get confused on certain steps and procedures (Sharon ¶9). One thing that people should know about being a nurse is that it is one of the most demanding professions and requires a lot of dedication and commitment. If there is no commitment, then nursing isn’t the job to take.
