The previous weeks of class have provided insight into nursing health informatics and how to professionally use social media. Health informatics refers to the collaboration of technology and healthcare in hopes of improving the client and nurse’s experience while using social media positively involves monitoring what is posted online, acting professional, and respect one’s own and other’s privacy (COACH, 2013) (International Nurse Regulator Collaborative, 2014). Both concepts explored in class are significant and must be explored separately or together by student nurses. Nursing health informatics is a newer topic in the healthcare sector. It allows nurses to reduce error amounts, quickly generate client information, and increase care, but …show more content…
For many, social media is how to stay connected with what is going on in the world, but for nursing students this craze can be quite dangerous (Peck, 2014). Anything that is posted online can be seen, reported, and cause someone’s life to change in an instant. For example, if a student nurse connects with one of their clients on social media, this client has access to the student’s personal life. Not only is the student crossing the boundary of the therapeutic nurse-client relationship, but he or she is not showcasing a professional image and may be putting him or herself at risk (International Nurse Regulator Collaborative, 2014). Other scenarios involving unsuitable use of social media include complaining about a client or co-worker, posting inappropriate photos, etc. (See Appendix) (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2013). Moreover, it is important for all nurses, especially students to learn the importance of navigating social media in a way that keeps their professional and private life …show more content…
It is much easier in todays society for one to search various health organizations such as the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) on Facebook or other social media outlets and learn about upcoming events, recent developments, etc. Although the collaboration has many positive aspects, there are always going to be a few negative to accompany them, such as someone posting content that may be considered abusive. Additionally, this prevalence of social media and informatics has proven to be a successful partnership in one study that looked at a group of women who were scheduled for an abdominal mammography. Each woman had access to an online forum, which provided her with information related to the mammography. This access to the forum was found to help decrease overall anxiety levels the women might have been feeling (Fernandez-Luque & Staccini,
Nursing Informatics is the integration of nursing science, computer science and information science to process and manage data and information in nursing practice. The goal is to promote the health of people, families, and communities through advance information and communication technologies (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012). The common saying “knowledge is power” is pertinent to this course. Nursing informatics provides nurses with knowledge that will empower them in achieving

The growth of nursing from the time of Florence Nightingale to our present generation has really evolved were nurses us to be at the bedside caring for wounded soldiers, showering and toileting of patients to a more advanced critical thinking and analyzing information that has been collected for proper processing. It is time to take nursing to another level that will save our patients and the community as a whole. One of the advantages of informatics is the safety of our patients so they are not hurt from the cares we provide. As explained in the American Nurses Association (2015) there is much assurance in the safety of our patient and health care providers. Even though the goal of the health industry is to integrate the health care in the IT world, nurses need to properly master the technology and be competent users. Gugerty & Delaney (2009) explained in their article the need for a nurse to meet up with the fundamentals of informatics in other to provide safe and competent care. Therefore, every organization has to work hard to prove their employees with the resources needed to achieve this milestone. Striving to meet up with this new technology as a nurse, my goal is to be proficient at informatics so that I can safely take care of my patients.
Communication has been permanently changed by social media. A wide conceptual definition of social media, as cited in Ressler & Glazer (2010), is “The online and mobile accessible services that enable individuals to connect, collaborate, and share with others in real time.” Social media has an obvious influence on informal communication style and represents both possibility and liability for healthcare institutions. As cited in Bernhardt, Alber, & Gold (2014), “Social media provide healthcare professionals with tools to share information, to debate health care policy and practice issues, to promote health behaviors, to engage with the public, and to educate and interact with patients, caregivers, students, and colleagues.” It also presents challenges, including risks to information accuracy, organizational reputation, and individual privacy. Social media can be a very helpful in communicating among nurses and other healthcare providers while creating professional connections, and sharing experiences, but guidelines for appropriate use by healthcare providers are essential. Whether or not certain healthcare organization decides to use social media as a communications tool - social media policy still need to be implemented. Policies help establish an organization 's rules and expectations around social media.
Nursing informatics and technology are quickly becoming the hot buzz words for nursing in the twenty-first century. While performing research for this specific paper, the observations of how far technology has come from its inception is mind boggling. When looking back to the mid 1990’s every patient had paper charting. Nurses manually charted vital signs, nursing notes, treatments and all orders were manually written in the chart. The patient’s name, insurance information, and billing items were stored electronically. Fast forward twenty plus years and everything nurses do with, for or to a patient is filed electronically. This file today is known as the electronic health record (EHR) (Lavin, Harper, & Barr, 2015). This paper will be delving into the history of nursing informatics and technology, the pros and cons for nurses and what will be the big picture for informatics and technology in nursing today and in the future. Nursing informatics and the technology that has evolved over time are changing and quickly affecting how nurses treat, communicate, plan and document everything that they do for their patients.
In the world today, smartphones are becoming the “norm”, with basic phones becoming nearly obsolete in recent years. Pairing the overwhelming presence of social media with the rise in usage of smartphones brings to light an entirely new set of problems and challenges regarding patient privacy. According to a 2010 study conducted regarding various boards of nursing, 67% of executive officers surveyed reported receiving complaints about nurses misusing social media (Spector & Kappel,
Nursing informatics is a branch of nursing or area of specialty that concentrates on finding ways to improve data management and communication in nursing with the sole objective of improving efficiency, reduction of health costs, and enhancement of the quality of patient care (Murphy, 2010). It is also described as a growing area of nursing specialty that combines computer science, information technology, and nursing science in the management and processing of nursing information, data, and knowledge with the sole objective of supporting nursing practice and research. Various nursing theorists have formulated various theoretical frameworks or models related to nursing informatics (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2013), and they are defined as a
Informatics in nursing has realized success in data communication management of information in the health department. Technology has improved the process of monitoring the patients within and outside the hospital. Application of Informatics contributed in the integration of multiple information. The clinician can now access and retrieve information about specific the occurrence in the healthcare (Middleton, 2014). Additionally, it has facilitated the process of sharing knowledge among the experts in nursing profession (Kudyda, 2016). Follow up on the success of informatics can lead to more improvement. The new technology that emphasizes real time data is a necessary advancement. Data analytics can result in further improvement.
As stated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA, 2014), when using social media, health practitioners should be aware that National codes of ethics and professional conduct apply. The British journal of Nursing (Farrelly, 2014) articulates that as a student nurse and future health professional, I have a responsibility to understand social media and confidentiality in the health care context. To become a successful nurse I will need to build trusting relationships with my patients, which will involve them being confident that their personal information will be protected by myself as a nurse. To achieve this it is essential that I adjust the ways I use social media and become more cautious of what I am posting online. For example, as a student and future RN, it is crucial that I do not discuss patients or post pictures, case studies or sensitive material which may enable patients to be identified. The misuse of social media may also have a negative effect on team-based patient care, for example if it is used as a tool to “cyber bully”
Without giving it much thought, technology has become a huge part of our day-to-day lives. It wasn’t until I took this class that I quickly realized how crucial technology would become for my career as a nurse. I had a generalized idea of what nursing informatics would entail but I never knew how in depth and useful the information would be and it’s influence it has had with the way I will now approach the system. For example, I knew what HIPAA meant and its importance to protecting patient’s privacy yet I was not aware of how much work goes into creating a system that tries to cover all of its bases in terms of security, while also keeping it user friendly, in addition to learning about newly improved designs of EHR systems that allow real
As the author continue to narrate the people story with the social media she talked about some people who are healthcare pursuer also using online internet to search for medical information and health issues. Also, she said nurses has an ethical duty to accommodate the limitation of using social media in such a way that protect people self-esteem.
At all times, health professionals must be aware that their actions must be used in a professional manner for when the public gains access to social media.
Although the times have changed, the important of maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy has not, especially on social media. With social media use becoming increasingly prevalent in daily life, it is important to ensure the safety and privacy of patients. Patient privacy is protected by law, and by the standards set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia; and health care providers, including nurses and student nurses, are required to ensure the health information of a patient is kept private and confidential at all times (Daly, Speedy & Jackson, 2014). Social media does have a place in nursing, with many institutions using it to better communication between nurses, however its use should be carefully monitored and users should be educated appropriately (Spector & Kappel, 2012).
Technology and innovation have transformed the way people function personally and professionally. In the past, writing and mailing a letter was standard but now most people send electronic messages and text messages to phones. Healthcare has been changing tremendously as well, not only are paper charts and records becoming obsolete, but now many facilities are sharing test results, visit information details, and prescribed drug lists. This move into the digital age has helped improve healthcare by cutting costs in the long-term, increasing efficiency with decreased wait times, and reducing medical errors. This evolving technology expansion, commonly referred to as nursing informatics has created many
