Memory is crucial to our lives, it allows us to function presently, moving toward the future.The capability of learning from our accumulated past experiences is the result of memory. Memories can be vivid and long-lasting, or short and unsteady. Memories may not always be ever-lasting, but the impact of them is. They allow us to form relationships throughout our life. Memories constantly change each time an individual recalls them, and eventually these memories begin to diminish over time as we age. The complexity of memory is utilized in unprofessional and professional settings.

The major goal in occupational therapy is to enable the patient’s participation in their life (Jackman). Enabling the individual to participate in purposeful events that are significant to the patients. Ultimately, influencing the activity participation in daily situations (Jackman). This then boosts his or her confidence and well-being. Occupational therapy helps those in need of various ages and issues.

The treatment is dependent on capabilities, age, values and cultural background of the patient.Occupational therapists assist patients in performing tasks, caring for daily needs such as dressing, cooking, eating, and driving. Occupational therapists obtain the skills for functions such as cognitive, sensorimotor, psychosocial, and more.

Cognition is defined by being the mental process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through experience, thought, and senses (Myers). Occupational therapists aim to enhance an individual’s cognitive functions (Gilles). This enhances the abilities to learn, retain, and utilize information, in an everyday setting (Gilles). Cognitive dysfunction can be the result of human genetics, neurologic diseases, injuries, and disorders, mental illness, and life stressors
