Online Learning Vs. Traditional Classroom

In conclusion, learning online comes with the unique perk of flexibility and pitfalls related to flexibility. Juxtaposing the classroom with my dining room ( traditional vs. nontraditional learning environments) reveals the only difference between the two environments a personal state of mind. Meaning, I must remain focused, humble, and fearless because my success is ultimately my responsibility. When I accepted this responsibility in 2005 and I started by taking one class at a time until I gained enough confidence to enroll full time. First, let’s start by getting to know the differences between online college and traditional college. Online colleges and traditional ones have the same goals in mind: to provide students with an education and award degrees. Although their purposes are the same, they have significant differences. A critical distinction between online and traditional colleges are the Internet-based curriculum. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, an online class is defined as "a formal education process in which the students and instructor are not in the same place." When deciding to take college courses there are many choices you have to make. One of the more important choices is where you plan to take your classes. Online classes are becoming increasingly popular because they can be easier to fit into a busy schedule, but some people still argue that nothing beats a traditional classroom setting. Having the option of online classes makes continuing an education more appealing to people that have to balance many other responsibilities like family, jobs, etc.

In today’s society, so many people are continuing their education beyond high school. We realize that in order to make a decent living, a degree is most likely a requirement. In some cases even a bachelor’s degree is not enough to qualify for many positions. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, we now have the option to learn online or in a traditional classroom setting. There are very few differences between the two, and students need to understand that as much time and energy will need to be devoted to the online courses as on a campus. “A 2010 meta-analysis and review of online-learning studies concluded that online learning was as good as or slightly more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction” (Mendenhall, 2011).

Social interactions also differ between the two types of education. On a campus, students attend a class, with instructors and classmates. This fosters more collaboration on projects. Many times students are not required to actively participate in class room discussions. In the online setting students are required to participate in the discussions, even though he or she does not see classmates face to face. Students can learn from your fellow class mates as well as the instructor and materials. Generally the students that perform best doing online classes are those who are able to work and learn independently.

Among schools with 12th-grade students during the 2010–11 school year, the average percentage of 12th-grade students who graduated with a high school diploma was 89 percent for traditional public schools, 91 percent for public charter schools, and 92 percent for private schools (Institute of Educational Sciences). Traditional on campus classes are those in which a student earns a diploma or a degree in a classroom environment taught by a professor. Students are provided with high amounts of social interaction with students and faculty to prepare them for careers outside of the classroom. From the time children are enrolled in kindergarten up to graduation, the familiarity of a classroom atmosphere sets up structural support to help them through their studies as well as provide students a sense of societal discipline. Traditional on campus classes are more beneficial to a student’s education than online courses.

Students with a strong sense of time management, self-discipline will become more successful taking online classes. When taking an online class there are factor we can remove that are typically associated with face to face classes. Due to the convenience of taking a course on line take away the pathos and focus on the class itself. Taking a course within an accredited college allows the students to have confidence with the ethos of the school and the instructors. However, learning online is totally a different ball game. When learning online most of the time there is no test or quizzes involved, you work at your own pace, and the only material you will need is your computer. Working at your own pace helps because, it allows you to work ahead and complete your assignments according to your own schedule and not having to wait on your instructor. A great advantage to learning online is, not having to travel to a physical classroom. Your work is available at any time of the day. Everything I needed was in my computer so I didn’t have to keep up with any material or purchase any. However, learning online, helps you to focus more with fewer distractions around you, but leaves you limitless to help when you need it.

Imagine waking up, eating breakfast, going to school, and completing your course work without leaving the comfort of your home or even your pajamas. The idea of attending school online and at personal convenience is an option that many high school and college students have difficulty passing up. In today’s education system, students have the option to attend school in a traditional classroom setting or attend online in the comfort of their own homes. Both options have their benefits. However, in most cases, a traditional classroom education better prepares students K-12 for their futures by encouraging self-discipline and communication between teachers and peers.

The differences seem to be profound and similar at the same time with online learning and traditional classroom education . The online tool of technology has the relationship of human and machine conversing , working as a unit , impersonal , with a no interaction as with a human being as teacher . In that reality the teaching basically is deleted where the student is teaching their selves to a certain extent with learning also. With this you only find information that is updated for the learning experience of the student , this is the similarity with classroom learning .For the teacher also gives information also derived from updated curriculum works .

As an online learner you are studying without the physical attendance of a classroom. You study at home, work or wherever you like, whenever you like, without a set time. You set your own schedule and study at your own pace. As a previous online learner almost a year ago studying a diploma, I have some insight to what it is like to be exposed to that kind of environment as I have studied before, it takes motivation and the eager determination to learn. If you prefer to study at your own pace where ever it may be or you want to balance home, work and study life then studying as an online learner is for you.

Most students were more confident when they were taking a traditional class rather then an online class; because of its efficiency. However, recently online learning is on the rise. Earlier studies of online learning have concluded that these technologies were not somewhat different from regular face to face instruction in terms of effectiveness. College students should consider taking online learning as an option to improve their learning because it is as efficient as face-to- face instruction in terms of student outcomes, the online learning step could prove the effective cost choices, and need to provide access to learners in a place where traditional learning is not possible.
