Organizational planning is a fine art; it is the most intricate phase of an organization’s start-up and implementation process and the most important. One can have a vision for a business; however without proper planning it will not reach its full potential. This concept paper will discuss the necessity of proper strategic planning for an organization, by examining three key components of planning; organizing, leading and controlling. Organizational planning starts with a vision, the leader must create a mental picture of the final product; this is followed by defining the mission of the organization and the goals of the organization. During this planning stage it is wise to have a seasoned spectrum of leaders working together to develop the business structure. This team is crucial to the success of the project; their ability to see and embrace the vision will be beneficial in getting others to embrace the plan. They must plan for the expansion of the business, possible problems with the business and the longevity of the business. They must establish practices that will accommodate expansion; this is more than growing in numbers. Expansion also encompasses evolving with society by providing the services needed for that moment in time to meet the needs of the target group. All of these things are developed within the planning stage. The next step is building the framework that will support your plan. This frame is comprised of the mission statement, stated goals, and development of policy that will help the business run efficiently. Although we plan for success a wise team will also evaluate areas that may lead them to failure. The threat of failure is just as real as success, so it is necessary to identify vulnerable areas in the plan along with practices that may lead to vulnerability. These issues are investigated during the strategic planning stage.
