University of Phoenix Material Origins of Psychology and Research Methods Worksheet Part I: Origins of Psychology Within psychology, there are several perspectives used to describe, predict, and explain human behavior. The seven major perspectives in modern psychology are psychoanalytic, behaviorist, humanist, cognitive, neuroscientific/biopsychological, evolutionary, and sociocultural. Describe the perspectives, using two to three sentences each. Select one major figure associated with one of the perspectives and describe his or her work in two to three sentences. Type your response in the space below. Psychoanalytic perspective means to explore the unconscious drives, internal motives, conflicts and childhood …show more content…
To see the effect a drug has on someone. Descriptive Observe, collect and record data Minimizes artificiality, makes data collection easier, allows description of behavior and mental processes as they occur Little or no control over variables, cannot identify cause and effect, researcher or participant bias An example would be the cencus that is put out every few years to record population or other surveys that collect data. Correlational Identify relationships and asseses how well one variable predicts another It helps clarify relationsips between variables that cannot be examined by other methods and allows prediction Little or no control over variables, cannot identify cause and effect Researchers have studied the correlation between birth defects and tobacco. Correlation is not about cause and effect but rather how a relationship between two variables works Biological To identify contributing biological factors Shares the advantages of the other three methods. Shares the dis-advantages of the other three menthods. One example of biological research would be a CT scan of someone who has a healthy brain and someone who has an injured one and the behavior of both Part III: The Brain Studying the
Different observation techniques help to focus the observation so appropriate data is collected and presented in meaningful ways.
Birch et al. found that there are benefits of non human research for example his research on animal behaviour on damaged crops, which led to the development of scarecrows to prevent any further damage to both the crops and avoiding poison to kill the animals. This study served a purpose to save both the animal and the crop. Scientific arguments for animal research states tat it has been a major contributor to our knowledge of basic learning processes such as conditioning and motivational systems such as Skinner’s research with pigeons. Also Selye’s experiment on rats showed an important connection between stress and diseases.
allows for participants that are more willing to adhere to the study, and therefore may impact the
In this essay I am looking at where Psychology as a discipline has come from and what affects these early ideas have had on psychology today, Psychology as a whole has stemmed from a number of different areas of study from Physics to Biology,
| -They produce data on very specific, narrow topic i.e. the relationship between two variables-Experimenting on human beings in care situations raises difficult ethical issues (Moonie, Stretch, et al, 2003).-Participants usually know that they are in an experiment which may affect the behaviour they produce-It may be time consuming(Stanley, Boswell, et al, 2009).
However with advantages come disadvantages. For example, with correlational studies there is no background information obtained. Therefore, the reliability of the correlational studies is questioned.
There are ten things stats is very important for such as: weather forecasts, emergency preparedness, predicting diseases, medical studies, genetics, political campaigns, insurance, consumer goods, quality testing, and the stock market. Weather forecasts use stats to predict the weather using prior conditions, the weather forecasts tells us how to prepare for the day and what to expect throughout the day. Emergency teams use the weather forecasts to tell them to be ready or not to help people they use statistics to tell them when danger may occur. When predicting disease the lady or man telling you about the deaths or the disease is spreading it may not
It enables people to judge spatial relationships and navigate, understand numbers and their relationships, and know how to utilize and manipulate objects.
History and Systems of Psychology is a course requirement offered to Psychology majors and minors. This course is used to provide majors and minors with the foundation and the evolution of the field of psychology. Within this class, many scholars of discussed. Two scholars that stood out to me in this course would be John Watson and Max Wertheimer. These two particular scholars are responsible for two of the most influential and famous schools of thought, behaviorism and Gestalt psychology. These two schools of thought are responsible for changing the field of psychology and introducing the field to new theories and ways of thinking. Although the two schools of thought are similar in being influential but they are different in many ways. The two schools of thought are even said to be contradictory of one another and one is even said to be the cause of the fading out of the other.
* Psychological Perspectives: general points of view used for explaining people’s behavior and thinking, whether normal or abnormal.
The observer must be trained in un-biased observation skills and how to effectively identify critical factors
It allows a larger sample of the population to be included in the study than what could be collected independently over a short time period.
Correlation and causation was a confusing topic for me at first because it was hard for me to understand what the two are, their differences, and why we were comparing them. But, through spending some time with it, I might have it down enough to explain in this short paper.
While correlation has its place in research, it is important to remember that correlation does not point out direct cause (Gilovich,
