THE DUBAI PALMS: CONSTRUCTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES ETHAN POLIE
In the late twentieth century, the Middle Eastern nation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) began to make plans to distance itself from the petroleum industry that dominates most of the Persia. Driven by the fact that internal experts believe the country’s oil reserves will be depleted by the year 2012, the UAE is attempting to transition to a service industry, with a major focus on tourism, retail, and entertainment. In order to transform its economy, the UAE is first focusing of the already advanced city of Dubai, which is the first tax free, centrally-planned, freemarket capitalist society in the Middle East (1). With an economy valued at over forty six billion

At this point, the island began to show shape, but rose only several feet above the surface of the water. The final step was to dredge over 8,500,000 m3 (302,000,000 ft3) of ocean sand onto the top of the base structure in order to create habitable islands. This sea sand increased the island’s height to 4 m (13 ft) above low tide (6). In order to quickly, yet precisely acquire and distribute the sand, fleets of dredging vessels and massive transport/delivery ships were brought from a European manufacturer. Dredging In dredging millions of cubic meters of sea bed, the project used specialized cutter suction dredgers in order to apply the sand to the desired surface. A cutter suction dredger, according to the European Dredging Association (EuDA), is a large rig with a powerful underwater suction tube generally 10 - 100 cm in diameter extended angularly from the centroid of the vessel with a large crane extending from the rear of the ship to stabilize the tube (7). Due to the dense makeup of the Persian Gulf, the dredgers had a cutting head at the base of the tube. This head chews through the rock bed with over 5,000kW cutting power. It was equipped with a massive jet dredge system powered by a submerged pump attached to the tube to help pull the destroyed bedrock into the ship (8 & 9). The jet dredge systems create an extreme negative pressure in the pipe, which creates a basic Bernoulli venturie tube effect.
The Marcus Island healthcare system is characterized as socialized medicine where all residents have access to primary care, pharmaceuticals and diagnostic testing. While residents have access to care, they are responsible for a small portion of the payment at the time of service, and in some cases, those who are willing to pay a premium are afforded better access to services. While patients themselves believe their healthcare is either adequate or good, there are several aspects of the Marcus Island healthcare system that suggest care could be better. Specially, Marcus Island’s health care system has been running increasing budget deficits for the past five years. The health care system lacks access to comprehensive

The poem "Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy's Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota has inspired reams of analysis and debate and still does to this day. We are presented in James Wright’s poem with several images which are actually distinct, though they are loosely connected by situation, but is for us connected with them by neither logic nor association. A great majority of the images that occur in the poem are based off of the basic senses such as our auditory and visual senses. Although almost basic in a sense, the content of the poem uses our own natural, human senses to express this aura of mediocrity and usualness.
On April 27, 1978 in Willow Island West Virginia, there was a failure that occurred that had killed 51 construction workers. At a height of 166 feet a lift was hoisting concrete to continue the expansion of the Allegheny Power System Power Plant, where it started to collapse. During the collapse of the crane, the concrete began to unmold and the concrete pummeled the wooden scaffold that held the 51 construction workers that soon fell to their death (Lew). This incident had left a devastating effect on several families, but one in particular. Gary Steele retells his account of losing ten relatives which would include an uncle, four brothers and five cousins (“Willow Island”).
I was born today. My bones quarried at Rano Raraku near the northeast end of my homeland, Easter Island. My makers were small, with deep tawny skin that gleamed with moisture under the sun as they carved the gentle curves of my body. As I lay among the rock, an unmoving piece of stone that stretched across the land to the creatures that constructed me, I observed the thriving life around me. I was surrounded by trees, some whose unbranched bodies shot into the vibrant sky, their silky, lively leaves dancing in the warm wind that swept over me. Down at my laying level, grew a variety of small, round, leafy, thin, and sweet smelling plants, sprouting from the land like gifts sent from the fertile soil. From the moment
I have to admit that we are very blessed with so many beautiful and breathe taking cities in the world. Dubai is just one of the many countries which has advanced from their humble beginnings and today are multi million tourist. Dubai is another city which has moved from having not as much as other countries once did such as money and a stable economy, to one of the richest cities in the world. In 1966 oil was discovered in Dubai and was a catalyst for Dubai’s economic growth. From a country that had come from not having a stable economy and not a lot of money, it has become like I said earlier, one of the richest cities in the
When the machine is digging in the ground, the drilling by the hammer can hit the rock in one place, but it is different at sea, when the machine is drilling into the sea, the hammer that digs the rock's difficult to drill for the pole because the water changes the drilling path every time, they began to use a tool through which you can drill in one place, by placed the hammer inside hollow pipe, and the hammer can drill after that in one place. The machine can drill for 3 meters.
The economy in the United Arab Emirates has experienced substantial increases in the last 40 years. The UAE’s capabilities with the pearling and oil industries have given the region its necessary budgets to expand so rapidly. The economic policies in the UAE have gone through stages, since the birth of the region in 1971. Changes in economic welfare of the markets, and privatization policies are also key aspects in understanding the UAE’s economic liberalization and growth. In order to understand the UAE’s economic standard, economic liberalization must be analyzed. The argument of this paper will discuss how economic liberalization has occurred in the United Arab Emirates and is continuing to grow.
The UAE is one of the riches nations in the world as measure by per capita GNP. The economy is primarily based on the oil
The UAE 's economy is the most diversified in the Gulf and the wider region. There’s no income tax. The gross domestic product is 67,616 dollars US per capita. The country oil and gas reserves are among the richest in the world. Successful efforts at economic diversification have reduced the portion of GDP based on oil and gas output to twenty five percent with a plan to push it to zero within next fifty years (Renewable Energy Prospects: United Arab Emirates p. 30). Low prices of oil have prompted the UAE to take steps to reduce its spending on country wide social programs, including eliminating fuel subsidies in August 2015. The IMF recently praised the vision and fiscal policies adopted by the country that
