My awakening to the significance of child protection and injury prevention through the medical field became apparent to me my freshman year in high school. I began making countless efforts to raise money for vaccination in an effort to combat Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus in third world countries. I also became aware about the issues of Pediatric Trauma and how 90% of unintentional injuries can be prevented so I raised $1000 dollars for the Pediatric Trauma Program. The money fundraised will be used to educate not only the community but professionals pursuing a profession in the medical field in order to reduce the number of children who are killed or injured by trauma. Lastly I helped raise money for the Children's Miracle Network in order to directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs, and provide healthcare for children whose parents can't afford …show more content…
I was raised in a loving household with two outstanding parents and although we are not wealthy in any means I was extremely happy. I had the privilege of getting a deep knowledge of my culture and having a strong bond with local Eritreans in Santa Rosa. In my culture we accept everyone as our own and treat than as such so although I never got to have a close bond with my immediate family back in Eritrea I was fortunate enough to gain one with my local Eritrean community that was forged not through blood but through love. I picked up this “family not through blood but love” ideology from a young age and it truly had a big impact on the person I am today. It allowed me to not only become an accepting and welcoming person to those I meet but also allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation to new cultures and traditions I get the privilege of experiencing in the diverse school I
Your introduction is very engaging and emphasizes the important role of communication after experiencing trauma. I believe your topic is very relatable because there is a sense of denial, seclusion, and dissociation that correlates with trauma and loss that many of us have experienced. Open communication within a family unit provides opportunities to express thoughts and feelings and develop appropriate coping strategies (Zambianchi & Bitti, 2014). In your intro you stated, "The impact childhood trauma has on our society and on children." As a suggestion, maybe you could expand on this statement or state specific impacts childhood trauma has on our society or on children. I love your examples of evidenced based interventions and how
This final project will be extremely difficult for me since, I have no memory of my childhood. I have been in therapy for ten years now, and I still am unable to find out why I can’t retrace any memories. Therapists believe there was a trauma early in my life and I have not come to terms with it. My mother on the other hand says it is “normal” to not remember your childhood. It is difficult for me to really know what is true and what isn’t. It will take a lot of digging into my past to find six life events that have effected my development.
We hosted the third annual “Childhood Trauma Conference”, at the Thunderbird International School of Global Management. We had over 100 attendees for the pre-conference and over 150 attendees for the two-day conference. Various well known outside professionals as well as some Touchstone staff members presented. The feedback from participants was exceptionally positive. The conference was profitable, netting more than $3,000. This was down from last year with expenses higher this year.
