My Civic Journey
Through the duration of this course some of my opinions on civic issues have changed and some have stayed the same. An opinion of mine that has changed is the number of flaws in our education system. This is an important civic issue because the education of young people is deciding the future of this world. This is politically significant because this generation will grow up to be a part of politics whether running for a role in the federal, provincial, or municipal parliamentary or simply voting in an election.
At first thought, I thought that our education system was alright, but I was only thinking about my school in particular, where there are not many fights or serious altercations or problems and the school is kept in a nice condition. However, I was on Youtube one day and saw a video about some of the most dangerous schools in North America and realized that not all high schools are the same and that there were a lot of flaws in the way that our education system favours to the higher class and the lower class can manage with what they get. It is also similar with learning styles - kids who are able to learn through memorization and reading excel while kids who are visual learners or need fundamental objects in order to understand the concept being taught suffer. This is also negative for students, like myself, who cannot always get exactly what they are thinking down

Provincially, a law could be placed stating that funding would be supplied fairly to schools based off of size, not off of its location, history, or ethnicity of students attending. Federally, a solution is for post secondary lowering the cost of international fees because they are nearly triple the cost of what a Home Student
I'm turning 18 soon and I want to clarify my freedoms if I'm going to continue living with my parents. I'm afraid they'll continue to restrict me like they have for the past 17 years. If I'm living under their roof, are they allowed to tell me that I can't go out? Living there is a generosity, so legally, I don't think they can hold me from going out, but they could not let me back in (which they'd never do, but it's always possible). And for house rules, I completely understand taking out the trash, doing the dishes, but do they really have that much power over me that they can set a bed time. This may be a sit-down-and-talk-about-it-issue with my parents, but legally is this possible? And lastly, my dad said he would give me his old car which
The other day, I tried to share an article, on a social justice issue, with my close friend [white, cisgendered female], but before I could start reading, she responded with “Ugh, don’t read that. I’m not in the mood for anything depressing,” all the while rolling her eyes.
In my life there have been many personal challenges I've had to deal with. Many of these challenges circulate around my movement with my mother as we've been all over the United States as her job wasn't as stable five years ago as it has become recently. We lived in Iowa for four years, 1,000 miles away from my father and the house I grew up in. We became two separate households. I knew, most of all, it would be a strain on my parents, who would only get to see each other on holidays or whenever they could scrounge up enough money for the journey.
On another task to look at the community, we had to broaden our world. Instead of going around and interviewing professors, we have to interview people in and around the Durant area. We got a list and had to pick from that list. I was hoping that someone from the Church would be on the list. Looking over it, no name sounded familiar. However, one person in our group knew someone on the list, which gave us a leg to stand on. Our chosen person was located in Calera, and went by the name Samuel Sanchez.
Confessing one 's political identity in 2016 truly embodies the phrase “walking on eggshells”. Whether you’re a liberal or conservative, owning up to your political resolutions sometimes comes with some intense backlash. In this years’ presidential election we have an intense candidate with very radical views, and if you don 't know who I’m talking about you should probably move from the rock you are living under. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has gained a immense popularity amongst not only the American public but Internationally as well. His chauvinist rhetoric, egotistical outlook, and how he continuously fabricates lies upon lies has truly brought him into the public eye. Hearing Trumps incredibly horrifying agenda makes me proud to admit that I am a Democrat, a solid liberal to be exact. As a solid liberal I believe in the power of the people and that means all people.Whether you are rich, poor, black, white, gay, or straight building and creating a nation that caters to people inherently means doing right by the economy and when we do well for the economy we do well for everyone.
At the pool I seen a new face in the deep end of the pool. Ryley was running in the water for 30 minutes. She said that she is a runner and trains for marathons and half marathons since college. She can’t run currently due to an ankle injury. She got a membership to the Y about 3 months ago so she could do water therapy here. The morning time is when she use to come but she can only make it in the afternoon now. We talked for a bit about different events that we ran in high school and the events that I currently run at HBU. She seems excited to be at the Y for her training. It’s good to see that the Y is able to have a pool for people who are looking for water therapy.
I believe that one of the most notable accomplishments was when I was working for Citizens Advice Direct as a Generalist Telephone Adviser I received a call from a very distressed customer. He had recently lost his wife and believed that he was being stalked by his brother-in-law. The customer was very emotional and expressing suicidal thoughts. Even though I has sympathy for the customer, I had to make the customer aware of the fact that I could only provide general advice.
In the beginning, I went to the center to take the blue teams flag. I decided to change my team to the red side. I made sure the blue side wouldn't win. I saw a guy named 05Ninja05.
I would change my community so that we waste less food. Currently, many food sellers have strict rules in place which result in perfectly edible food being thrown out. I have frequently seen cafeteria workers at my school take away hot meals from students with insufficient funds, resulting in hungry students and fuller landfills. On a visit to Walmart recently, I watched customer service workers refund a consumer for returned, unopened food, and then promptly mark the goods as waste. After closing, restaurants will dispose of their unsold daily goods in garbage. I believe our community needs to stop feeding maggots and landfills and start feeding the
After reading the article, I feel that God is calling me to give back to my community in some way. Initially I was not too sure how, but after reflecting on my talents, I have an idea. My characteristics are my greatest gifts and talents. I have realized that my talents are that I am humble, dedicated, resilient, compassionate, goal focused, and understanding. However, I can best highlight my talents when I share my time with others.
During the beginning of my sophomore year I would constantly hear students around school converse about wanting to help out the community but didn't know where to start, where to go, or who to talk too about it. I was explaining to my friend about a school club idea that I had, which was to open a club that would help students find ways to assist the community and also receive community service hours for doing so.Therefore, starting junior year my friend and I submitted paperwork to start our own school club, we named it the CAS Hour Club. Our club was composed of many students, from all grade levels, both girls and boys eager to help out the community. We had many club meetings where we brainstormed about many interesting ideas and projects that we could possibly bring to life. We used ideas from our club members to organize many events such as community and beach clean-ups.
I’ve been at Chapman for the past year, and the day I stepped on campus was the day I knew my calling to inflict change. My first objective upon arriving was to join a Democratic club, or if there wasn’t a Democratic club on campus, I would strive to establish one. Being that Orange County is such a conservative district when it comes to local politics, I was afraid that politically I would be a blue fish, in a red sea of sharks. After finding the club, I volunteered to be on the executive board my first time joining. After a semester I was elected President of the Chapman Democrats. I am most proud of this accomplishment because I told many before actually holding the president position, that I was going to establish a safe space for others
I have spent my life working towards being a person who gives back to her society. For me it is important to not only be a productive member of society but also be able to “pay it forward”. That is why I decided to attend Walden’s online doctoral program because of the university’s commitment to positive social change. By choosing to attend Walden University, I have further cemented my identity as an advocate for positive social change. I have, and plan on continue to be, an agent for change. My volunteering background and my research goals for my doctorate is proof of this calling to be a force for good in our society.
As an American I am obligated to help my fellow citizen and my community. Grace Lee Boggs was an American philosopher, author, feminist, and social activist. She once said “You cannot change any society unless you take responsibility for it, unless you see yourself as belonging to it and responsible for changing it.” We often want change but are not willing to cause it. As an individual I must first recognize my part in the community, then step up and start taking my duties to help my community seriously. Before I moved to West Virginia my church had a “Reformer's Unanimous” program, It helped addicts come off their addiction. We had a detention center right by our church, and a lot of the ladies would come over for the program. I used to volunteer
Our education system as a whole is heavily flawed, there are numerous issues with it. You would think that the amount of money our government puts into the education system that our country would have multiple success rates, but its the complete opposite. Our country doesn 't even rank in the top 10 for Reading, Science and Math. There was a recent study done by PISA this year and they tested over 500,000 people in 70 different countries ranging from the age 16-18 in all 3 subjects. The United States ranked 35th place in Math, 24th place in Reading and 25th place in Science (Business Insider). This is evidence the current methods that we have been using over the years isn 't working to it 's maximum potential.
