As a mechanical engineering student with an acute interest in the industrial work environment, I have understood the principles of mechanical engineering those are applicable to most of the machines, tools and processes which naturally widens my scope of learning and research. This has raised the interest in me to explore the option of pursuing my masters in mechanical engineering from your prestigious university which would not only help in increasing my knowledge but also prepare me in the best possible way to attain my ambitions. If you had asked me a year ago what I was going to do with my life, I would have had no idea. This thought scared me because I was a junior in high school, and I did not know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do. I had dreams of being an astronomer or an architect, but I could always find a reason against these careers. I remember thinking, ‘I just want to make an impact.’ I wanted to live a purposeful life, one filled with adventure and challenges. One where, there was always work to be done, and something to accomplish. Then though some divine intervention, I discovered Civil Engineering. Through personal experience and learning about the occupation, I have decided that as a Civil Engineer I can accomplish my own personal goals while also benefiting others.

The development of every nation hinges on the effectiveness of their transportation systems. Movement of goods, services and people to and from work is made possible by transportation systems. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. A lot of countries are facing Transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. A trip of about 30 minutes can take about an hour or more due to traffic jams. This is seriously impacting productivity and has been a topical issue in the country. The situation is the same in Uganda where I currently work. One of the most fast emerging economies of the world-India, is on the drivers seat of a vibrant development in infrastructure like expressways, power plants, bridges, smart cities . India is sprinting fast to make up the lost time and catch up with the developed world and achieving better standard of living. Growing up, I was fascinated in science, math, and cars. I thought to myself, what can I do in the future that has all three of these things together? Towards the end of high school, I noticed a major that would satisfy me is mechanical engineering. The quote by Henry Ford had the profound influence on my life when I learned it from my school history book. “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that an airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” I have the instinct to overcome challenges using my experience of failures. Throughout my years at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology(BUET), I have used this instinct of learning from failures and keep on trying until success to expand my boundary of understanding. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering to continue pushing my boundaries to become a top researcher, contributing to the understanding of Fluid Mechanics. With the quality of education and research conducted at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, my ambition to challenge the hurdles becomes attainable.

While growing up, many adults would ask me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I did not know how to respond to them back then and I still do not know but now I know some qualities I would prefer in a career. I desire a career I truly enjoy, not one based off of pay. Having a career where I follow instructions will be ideal. Despite following instructions, others must acknowledge and consider my ideas. However, the most important aspect of a career to me is to improve the quality of life of the community. It is vital to start exploring careers now to make a good lifelong decision.

In this letter of intent, I am going to focus on the purpose of studying Industrial Engineering further at the post-graduate level. I have chosen University name because I feel it will best prepare me to fulfill my future career objectives. I jot down my Statement of Purpose with due respect to the Department and the University.

A five-foot five-inch replica of the Empire State Building that I stacked entirely with playing cards back in high school was the first time I appreciated the subtleties involved in creating complex card structures. I gradually progressed to stacking domes and a full-sized stadium, but the way this tower held together fascinated me, and I realized that there was much more going on in addition to the seemingly obvious concept of maintaining the right balance. After all, nothing could be that simple. Likewise, after four years of undergraduate studies in civil engineering, it seems to me I have barely scratched its surface. A graduate school will allow me to delve deep and let me explore the finer aspects of the field. Furthermore, this is crucial in terms of achieving my long-term goal of pursuing a PhD to carve out a career in industrial research.

With the manufacturing sector moving towards Industry 4.0 and smart factories, this is a propitious time to pursue higher studies in Industrial Engineering. Having a fair bit of industrial exposure and some experience with advanced manufacturing, a Master’s program will further enhance my knowledge and be a solid foundation to build my

A simple bridge truss was the first structure I ever analyzed. The simple combination of beams that could hold cars, trains, and trucks over long spans of water fascinated me. Having the tools to analyze the loads on the truss further increased my interest in structures. I encountered the bridge in a textbook for my first engineering class.

In addition to regular studies, I actively participated in extracurricular activities. I participated in few Intra-School quiz contests.

The secret of mankind’s success, strength, and glory is knowledge. Knowledge is not something we are born with. It is through curious observation and constant learning the wealth of knowledge is amassed. I believe that even if a Subject is mile away from the reach of our contemplation, it can be learnt much through research and experience.

Ever since my childhood, I used to fix things at home. Sometimes it would work and other times it would go down the drain. As a kid, I’ve experimented on simple toys to various machines used at home which was obsolete. I was intrigued as to how machines worked and wanted to explore more about them. I remember a day when I fixed something at my home and everyone praised me. It was then that I realized that I had a thing for machines and this paved for my interest in Mechanical Engineering. During the process of study in this field of engineering and from the scientific world around me, I clearly felt the prominence of it in the field of science. It is no doubt that Engineering plays a vital role in our society. This is magnified in a time when the world is faced with so many significant problems – climate change, population density - to name just two. It is for this reason that I am so excited about the prospect of studying Engineering, especially at the point of so many major advances in technology, in AI and nanomaterials for example. In the future, I hope to help to lead these advances and solve these problems.
