The personal statement is very important to applicants who intend to be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate school. The role of a personal statement is to make applicants be different from other applicants. It mainly serves the purposes of persuading the admission committee of applicants’ great passion for the study field, explaining their experience that shaped their personality, demonstrating their longtime desire and commitment for the degree, and showing their life goals. What the admission committee is looking for in a personal statement varies from school to school, major to major. Art and Design is a unique program requiring its prospective students to be different in every aspect. The Art and Design Admission Committee is looking for a student who has creative potential in all respects. Hence, for those who want to apply to the School of Art and Design, they should understand how to present their stories, experiences, practice, goals, philosophy, inspirations, and aspirations in a creative way. …show more content…
Since the personal statement for graduate programs have received little attention from researchers, “The Statement of Purpose in graduate program applications: Genre structure and disciplinary variation” from Betty Samraj and Lenore Monk (2008) and “Genre analysis of personal statements: Analysis of moves in application essays to medical and dental schools” from Huiling Ding (2007) are the two useful articles illustrating the important moves and steps in a personal statement, helping me prepare my Master of Fine Arts application. In this report, I will explore the effective methods the readings provide, as well as the writing prompt from the Roski School of Art and Design, to construct my personal
A. Attention getter: Why did the art student cross the road? Because she decided to pursue a more useful degree. I sincerely wish the cultural artifact I was here to present was a list of potential job prospects for graduating art students, but unfortunately, no such thing exists.
I could make this essay as cliché as they come and talk about how being a single mother is so challenging, about how boot camp was so hard, or how a bad divorce changed my views on everything in my life… but instead, I’ll appreciate all of those things, and grasp my goals from a different challenge. That challenge is: loss. Some of my biggest goals were awknowledged through the death of my best friend, which in turn led me to this road at Paul Mitchell St. Louis. All of the above mentioned have shaped me, and for that I am grateful, however, the person who helped me realize my dreams of pursing art
Despite taking the place of a core class, fine arts can bolster and strengthen a student’s abilities in said core classes. Art is accessible to everyone and therefore can create a new sense of unity and connection among peers in and out of school. Students often don’t have many ways to express themselves, but by taking classes in the fine arts, students would have an expressive medium to do so inside of school. Skills learnt in fine arts classes can be used for a student’s entire life, regardless of age or condition, and thanks to the many other advantages of these courses, should be required for students to
“They can express their thoughts and feelings,” she said, noting the fine arts “enrich students lives and practice of creativity. Creativity is important,” she said, pointing to a group of students who are likely to face, as adults, “challenges we cannot envision.”
I’m proud of the essay as a whole because i spent more time on it then probably any other essay I have ever in my life. I think that it is put together chronologically. It fits the word limit. I honestly can say i’m okay with other people reading this. Most times i the peer editing because I rush on my writing. I think my thoughts were more organized because i gave myself time.
2. Aside from skill sets, what kind of information do you seek from 4 dedicated years of your life in an art major?
The reasoning behind this essay is to prove to The Art Institute of Pittsburgh-Online Division that I, Adriana Petoskey, have the ambition, passion, and autonomy to take on the responsibilities of what comes with obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design.
I am interested in providing essay feedback for College Prep Scholars because I firmly believe that the personal statement is one of the most important and crucial aspects of a prospective student's application. The personal statement is a tabula rasa, or a blank slate, in which the student can redefine themselves not in terms numbers, breaking the metaphorical chains of standardized test scores, grade point average, and class rank that serve to define the student as only a number.
Although I was not an outstanding student, I was confident with my grades in art classes. An art teacher I met in high school inspired me to be a designer. Yet a design major was somewhat distinguished from the art that I pursued. Her art class had a surpassing influence in my life. In a traditional art class of a Korean high school, students normally learned to draw a plaster model, an oriental painting, and a watercolor still life painting, which were boring for teenagers.
Personal Statement I would like to study Acting and the Theatrical Arts because I am very passionate about musical theatre, and have always wanted to play different roles, and make people happy and joyous through my performances. I want to pursue acting as a career because it has always been and interest of mine, and I have done a lot in school and my past to work towards finding a profession in Theatre. The course in general interests me because it includes everything that a person needs to know to improve their work as an actor, and because it will challenge me, and furthers me as an actress. The course does not only dwell on acting and performance, but also theatre itself, performances, dramatic texts, performance venues, and so on. I find this part very intriguing, due to the course not only focusing on the physicality of acting, but also
As I mentioned in my Why Transfer essay, I decided to major in art for my undergraduate study; the contrast between the life in Nashville and New York and the experience of my internships gave me the courage to finally make this determination.
While writing a compelling college essay may seem to be a daunting task at first, I believe that the key to generating a unique and moving topic is dedicating effort early in the writing process to personal reflection on your goals and motivations. Often, in writing personal statements for colleges and other applications, I set aside time to dedicate to focused reflection about events or moments in my life that illustrate my values or identity. In terms of the mechanics of an effective personal statement, I typically utilize the “zoom in, zoom out” method, which involves recounting a specific anecdote early in the essay, and then demonstrating how this anecdote contains lessons that apply to greater aspects of your motivation or identity. I have always aimed to become a physician. Many of my family members, including myself, have seen several doctors over the years. Whenever I would hear about doctors, it tended to be about MDs and not much about DOs. However, several of my friends, upon deciding to become doctors chose to pursue their careers within the osteopathic discipline. Then, when I started to complain about stomach pain and chronic diarrhea, I was sent me to a gastroenterologist who graduated from the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program and recommended that I apply.
As I prepared to re-enter life as a college student after a few years away from the classroom, I wanted to be intentional with the classes I choose. Yes, I need to fulfill the art requirement for my degree, so there is a larger picture at play, though I believe this course can also meet my desire to learn about how people would illustrate self-expression with the resources available to them at that particular time.
I have a wide range of skills and knowledge that I have acquired throughout my personal and professional life. I can communicate with different types of people regardless of age, race or class. I have accessed a huge range of courses that have enabled me to develop interpersonal skills including negotiation and dealing with different types of people and personalities. I also have the knowledge, drive and enthusiasm to work alone when required as I am self-motivated and can meet targets and deadlines. I believe that challenges are best met positively by developing and improving knowledge and skills and through professional reflective dialogue that leads to change. I am very hard-working and reliable. I work well under pressure achieving a high standard of work. I have practical and organisational skills and I can find solutions to problems and face challenges confidently.
