During the Personal Wellness Assignment, various factors influenced my fitness, nutrition, energy, and sleep numbers. I noticed that my nutrition, energy, and sleep scores were higher on Saturdays and Sundays because I didn’t have school on those days so I had more time to eat and sleep. My energy scores were high on those days because I was happy that I didn’t have school. I also notice that my fitness scores are low most of the time, except on Tuesday. This is because I have an extracurricular activity only on Tuesday. My graph shows that when my sleep scores are high, so are my energy scores. This indicates that I have more energy when I sleep for a longer time. My graph also shows that the nutrition and energy scores are exactly the same.

Life expectancy in the United States is below most of the developed world and yet Americans pay the most for healthcare (CIA). The reason that Americans are so low on the list is their dependency on conventional medicine. Whereas other countries take a holistic approach to overall health and wellness, preventing diseases before they become a problem, the American system of medicine treats illnesses and the symptoms without preventing further damage. The result is an entire society dependent on drugs and surgery and constantly living in pain.
Fitness and nutritional habits should be more enforced in today’s society; especially in the United States. The general public as a whole is less healthy the prior days. Completing the wellness lifestyle assessment helped me to identify the areas of my life where I need to make some changes, and reinforced what I knew about my wellness habits already. Considering all the components of wellness, I think my assessment was fairly encouraging. I was not too surprised at my results, but found out some areas that need more change than I had anticipated.
What if as a society we began to focus more on preventing chronic disease rather than treating them after onset? This is the question that has driven my interest in public health. I began my undergraduate career as a Viticulture and Enology major. I loved the idea of spending my days in a vineyard, nurturing grapes to maturity and then creating a final product that was entirely different from its humble beginning. It wasn’t until I was working in a lab at a winery that I realized winemaking was not for me. Although I loved the science involved, the career did not align with my social and environmental values. I was passionate about health and wellness, so the social issues of making a product that is abused by millions of people worldwide was not something I could live with. I began feverishly researching careers that would align with my interests in science and helping people. There are many ways to help people so I forced myself to think critically about what was important to me and what ways I wanted to make a difference. Deep down, I knew my biggest desire was to help as many people as possible rather than treating individuals on a case-by-case basis. Once I was able to answer that question, It became abundantly apparent that Public Health was the field I needed to pursue. My first true introduction to Public Health came in an Epidemiology class I took my junior year at Portland State University. In taking this class, it became apparent to me that chronic diseases are

In our line of work if we did not have an enormous group dynamics the results could be devastating. Now granted we are on a relatively small campus in a nice country area; however, we still work it as if were that of a campus in the middle of a large city. When Hackman listed the five basic conditions that separate a team from a workgroup he was spot on with each one. As our Chief tells us, there is no “I” in “TEAM”.

Constantly striving to maintain optimal health is the key to prolonging ones wholesome lifestyle. Although the multi-dimensions of health seem fairly general, they are must be observed in great detail to truly rationalize whether one are at their highest level of wellness. In my initial review of my own wellness, I could easily establish that my psychological health was in the most need of beneficial changes, while other concepts like physical and occupational health seemed to be in better standings. Little did I know, that while I was consciously working on my weakest points of health, I was overlooking many paramount details associated with the aspects on my health I believed to be my strongest. It was brought to light through the Dr. Oz Real Age Test that my constant forgetfulness of what some consider the most important meal of the day, breakfast, could cause me to age prematurely. After researching the benefits of not skipping this morning meal, I knew I had to alter this horrible habit.
Health and wellness are increasingly being used. Health actually is more to a medical and describes the mental and physical state of a person. It will reflect a lack of disease of a person. In the contrary, wellness is defined as the overall process of maintaining a state of good health of a person. Wellness involves conscious decisions on the part of the individual, while health simply describes a person's condition of the body. There will be five dimensions explained under this topic. Which are: Financial dimension, physical dimension, intellectual dimension, emotional dimension and social dimension. Wellness is substantially more than only physical wellbeing, activity or sustenance. It is the full coordination of conditions of these five dimensions.
Physical, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, spiritual, and environmental wellness are all considered the six dimensions of wellness with occupational wellness being the possible seventh. But what are these exactly? And how do they apply to me and my health and wellness?
