Genetic engineering is a great thing that can help our society grow in a healthier way. Genetic engineering can prevent deadly diseases in children [babies] before they are born genetic engineering can also be used on fruits and vegetables not just humans and animals.

“With genetic engineering, we will be able to increase the complexity of our DNA, and improve the human race. But it will be a slow process, because one will have to wait about 18 years to see the effect of changes to the genetic code”(Hawking). Scientists have been practicing editing the DNA of organisms in order to remove unwanted genes and or enhance their survival rates. As technology advances, it allows this practice to become more precise and successful. Scientist have been having successful test in modifying human dna which causes more controversies on whether it should be allowed or not.Genetic engineering should be permitted due to its ability to benefit the medical and environmental future.To begin with the idea of potentially removing unwanted traits in DNA sequences, to aid in removing hereditary diseases.

Imagine if we could make disease a thing of the past and extend the average human lifespan past 100 years. With genetic engineering, someday this future could become reality. Genetic engineering can cure genetic diseases, and extend and empower human life. However, many people have overestimated and reacted to ethical and safety concerns associated with this new technology.

Genetic engineering is the science of altering genes to produce a specific trait in an organism. Although it seems beneficial and inventive, genetic engineering is growing into a big problem. Genetic engineering may have its advantages, but it also has its disadvantages because it is negatively changing our society. On May 5, 2001, the world’s first genetically modified children were born. The United States performed an experiment from which, thirty healthy, GM babies were born; which brought up a concern for the ethics involved. The babies were born to mothers who would have been considered infertile otherwise. These children have DNA from three parents, two females and one male. Scientists extracted an egg from the infertile mother, and inserted fertile genes from the other woman before fertilization, in hopes of conceiving. The infertile women from the experiment were found to have defects in the mitochondria of their egg cells which prevented them from conceiving. Using the “healthy” eggs, scientists took fertile mitochondria and placed it into the infertile egg of the mother. Since these children have now inherited the modified genes into their germline, their “new” genes can be passed down to their children as well. Lord Winston, of the Hammersmith Hospital in West London, told BBC that, “Regarding the treatment of the infertile, there is no evidence that this technique is worth doing . . . I am very surprised that it was even carried out at this stage.”

Genetic engineering is the deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material. “If life is made of up of the same “stuff,” it should be easy to mix and match deoxyribonucleic acid from different organisms. All you have to do is cut out the DNA (gene) you want from one organism, and insert it into a new organism. This process is called genetic engineering. How to cut DNA: There are special tools that can be used to cut DNA called restriction enzymes, also known as DNA scissors, in order to combine DNA with different living things. GMO which is a (Genetic Modified Organisms) is the operation done in a laboratory where DNA genetic from one particular species or animals is directly forced into another gene from an unrelated subject of plants or even animals.

Why live a life with average abilities when we can enhance our abilities through genetic engineering on our DNA for the greater good? Genetic engineering is “the artificial manipulation, modification, and recombination of DNA or other nucleic acid molecules in order to modify an organism or population of organisms.” It is not exactly a science in a broad sense, but a branch of biotechnology, which uses methods of molecular and biology, virology, and genetics. Genetic engineering on the human genome should be approved because it has the potential to make lives and the world better. Genetic disorders could be permanently eliminated, certain genes could be reactivated for regrowth of necessary cells, eliminating many neurological disorders, and delaying ageing, which would expand scientific research in order to many world complications.

Genetic engineering is currently a growing field in which people are obsessing over. This is new and upcoming technology that combines genetic and Nanotechnological enhancements, which completes the direct manipulation of DNA to alter an organism’s characteristics in a particular way. In my opinion, it may very well be a great improvement, but it should only be used when necessary. If I were a parent of a child under 12 years of age, I would not sign up for the enhancement.

It all started in 1994 when the first genetically modified organism (GMO) product, the Flavr Savr tomato was introduced to American consumers. Unfortunately, the non-GMO tomatoes did not sell well because not only was an inferior-tasting product, but it was more expensive than the regular tomato. Genetic modification is a dangerous practice that negatively affects people and the environment and should be prohibited in the United States

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a molecule that contains the genetic code of all living things that determines height, eye colour, hair colour and other physical characteristics. DNA mutations can sometimes cause diseases and disabilities. Using genetic engineering to eliminate disease is a relatively newfound breakthrough, and is generally conducted on human foetuses in order to prevent later illnesses and defects that could affect the foetus in the long run.
