Genetically modified farming has become more of an issue in the agriculture and nutrition worlds over the past ten years. The big question is, do the benefits of GMO farming outweigh the losses. GMO corporations like Monsanto make business much harder for independent farmers, due to the cost difference and efficiency of GMO farming, as well as other reasons. GMO farming can also save funds and provide produce to a larger range of people. Genetically modified agriculture has an especially strong effect on Hawaii state farmers.While there are benefits to GMO farming, there are also many downsides.

Extra environmental damage occurs from GMO farming when compared to small scale farms. It takes the same amount of time to grow and the same amount of money. GMO foods coincide with higher food allergy levels in the population. Large GMO corporations cause small independent farmers to go bankrupt or get sued for accidental seed crossing. GMO seeds often have vitamins and minerals added into them, supplying very necessary nutrients that could be otherwise inaccessible to a portion of the population. Plants can also be genetically modified to provide vaccines and proteins through “pharming” (pharmaceutical farming). GMO plants also often have a longer shelf life, resulting in more time for transport and less food wasted. This process can also have environmental benefits such as reduced pollution, erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions. GMO plants and animals also need less machinery, time, and land, resulting in enhanced productivity.
