Police Brutality

Police brutality is the lavish physical assault or verbal assault during police procedures which can involve interrogating or apprehending a suspect. Police brutality originated from the labor worker strikes in the 1800’s through the 1900’s. The violent brutal act of these officers usually formed around the lower socioeconomic class. Since then police brutality has hit an all-time high in the 21st century. In New York alone there has been reportedly over 72 police brutality reports some reports even ended in the deaf of a citizen. There’s been claim of police officers violently choking citizens at traffics stops and beating citizen up in public. There’s been new technology such as body cameras which are used by most police but not all.

Imagine being in the Bart train, going to a party with some of your friends, but while in route, you are shot by the Bart police for a crime you did not commit. This is the story of a young man named Oscar Grant. On New Years Eve of 2009, he was fatally shot. . Police brutality is the use of excessive force, physically or verbally, by a police officer. In one year, how many incidents of police brutality or misconduct do you think have occurred? In the U.S. alone, statistics show that over 2,500 incidents have occurred. Because of the constant stories of severe police brutality, it is clear that the efforts to stop this are not effective. 

A police force is an organized body of people empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. In today’s society, it is often questioned if policeman’s purpose in society is fulfilled. Since 2015, police have killed 964 people in the U.S. Despite being only 13% of the population, black people were 25% (242) of those killed. (MappingPoliceViolence.org) These killings are often identified as police brutality. Police brutality is the use of any force exceeding reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose. Police brutality is a rising but yet unsolved issue that remains relevant in today’s society. Differences between African Americans and police officers often affect interaction amongst each other. When police officers aren’t representative of the people they are supposed to protect, they often use cultural differences, racial tensions, and bias to target or view these communities as dangerous.

Police brutality is one of the most severe human rights violations in the United States, and it occurs in many communities. Police officers have one of the hardest jobs out there. They have to maintain public order, prevent, and identify crime. Throughout history, the police community has been exposed by brutality in one way or another. Violence by law enforcement officers in the United States is one of the most serious human rights violations in the country. Police officers have engaged in unjustified shootings, severe beatings, fatal chokings, and unnecessarily rough treatment. A lot of people including myself confuse police brutality with excessive force. Police brutality is the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. While excessive use of force is when a law enforcement officer uses too much force when making a lawful arrest.

African American groups, such as Black Lives Matter, have created a false narrative that African Americans in our society are victimized by law enforcement. The media has presented police officers to be murderers, and have created trends and discussions that encourage Americans to turn their backs on the ones that protect them. Police Brutality has become an ongoing conversation as black citizens experience law enforcement related deaths. Although society is blaming the killings of African Americans on white cops specifically, they fail to realize that black and hispanic police officers are more likely to fire a gun at African Americans than white officers. Police brutality is when cops use unnecessary force while dealing with citizens and it takes place in many different ways. The most common and recognized type of police brutality is physical abuse, but there is also verbal abuse, psychological intimidation, false arrests, racism, and improper use of guns and Tasers. Police brutality is a huge crisis in our country and needs to be eliminated.

Police brutality comes in different forms from the 1800’s to now. Whether it was lynching, harassment, beatings, shootings, etc. Police brutality has caused major uproars all around causing people to come together to fight for what is right. Many friends and families have been affected from deaths and injuries caused by police. Some people might even believe the victims deserve it. There are good cops out there, but some police throw on their uniforms and abuse the power of being the authority.

To preface the topic of police brutality, it is important to understand that the practice of excessive force has been facilitated through law enforcement bodies throughout history. While these actions of brutality may seem commonplace due to our past standards, in no way are they acceptable in our present world. Police brutality is vicious and criminal when you think about it; it regularly consists of beating, shooting, and or killing citizens but not always innocent. These actions would be illegal for a regular citizen, with a possible life sentence if found guilty, but if a police officer is found at fault he or she often faces a significantly less severe punishment. These police abuse citizens when making an arrest.
