What many do not seem to realize is that a law enforcement agency is not a job, it is a career. One must truly be dedicated and determined to work in the field because it is all about your love for what you are doing.
The type of applicant in which a police department attracts all depends on who they need on their team to balance things out. For instance, if a department is lacking in female officers they are going to advertise and reach out to females so that more of them would gain interest in the force. The recruitment process in general consist of three different elements; the minimum qualifications, the recruitment effort, and the applicant’s decision to apply for a position.
The minimum qualifications include various aspects. Minimum age level is one of the main qualifications. Each department have their own set of rules and regulations but for the most part all departments have a standard age requirement which is no younger than 21 and no older than 35. Experts were not sure if 21 was a good age requirement because they could not tell whether one at such a young age could handle the task and whether if they were mature enough to do the job effectively and efficiently. It is not today in which many department put a age maximum but there are still a few, such as the New York Police Department, they do not allow anyone over the age of 35, for retirement
The Police Service are trying to recruit more female officers as well as more people from minority groups with an aim to have a more diverse workforce who can relate more to the public.
It is easy to take a look across the occupational spectrum and see that Law Enforcement is a very emotional and dangerous job. Law enforcement officials come in contact with homicides, street violence, and other tragedies while “protecting and serving”. They
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.

The first step in consideration of law enforcement selection, is recruitment and Conser (1978) explained mandated minimum state standards for selection dates back to the early 1950 's; albeit the actual reinforcement of established selection standards emphasized to the states until 1975, when The Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations found police selection standards lacking (Conser, 1978). This lead to enacting legislation, employing the development of state commission councils of policing standards composed of local officials’ and law enforcement agencies, whose main responsibilities were to: oversee, implement and enforce the screening and evaluation of potential candidates; ensuring properly provided services and protection of local communities (Conser, 1978). The commissions set minimum standards of: 21 years of age or higher, good physical health, set minimum and maximum height and weight requirements to ensure the abilities of candidates would meet the physical demands of law enforcement work (Conser, 1978). Moreover, officials’ conducted personality profiles, checked citizenship, verified addresses, and ran background checks (Conser, 1978). In addition, Cosner (1978) state the process also also involved: oral interviews,

This typical love and hate profession with the public did not detour me from my ambition to continue to serve my community in some form of law enforcement capacity. However, like most law enforcement organizations. These organizations have immediate eliminators to weed out the less desirable candidates in a diverse and complex society that we live in today. The one eliminator that I faced when I retired was my age. As for older military candidates, age can be one of the immediate eliminators from personnel attempting to apply for a position at the city, state, and even at the federal levels in Ohio.
policing is a pivotal part of effective policing, this paper will examine 2 articles that will discuss
The law enforcement community operates and has similarities like the military. They both have some type of basic training. They wear uniforms, have a rank structure, policy and procedures govern their actions, and in most cases have a politician as their commander or chief. Military members make up the largest candidate pool for law enforcement
