An important question to answer is when has someone committed an action that is worth dying for? For instance, is it in the act of killing someone? Is it after they have made the preparations to kill someone? Is it when they say they will kill someone? Or is it when they have thought about killing someone? In answer to the first question, studying how police officers justify the use of deadly force is a good starting point. In the state of Ohio, the law states that for police officers to use deadly force, is only when it is necessary to protect the officer or another from the risk of serious physical harm or loss of life (Discharging of Firearms by Police Personal 1). This makes sense on a moral standpoint because killing the man attacking would save other people from dying. Preventive defense were be working within one’s own country to implant stronger defensive measures keep an attack from even happening in the first place. For instance, returning to the kingdom analogy. There is a King who knows that barbarians desire to destroy his kingdom by shooting flaming arrows within the walls of the kingdom. The king has a moral duty to protect his civilians but he also has a moral duty to ensure that he does not kill barbarians un-necessarily. Therefore, instead of trying to decide if the barbarians really do have an intent to harm his kingdom, the King can instead command that his wall are built higher. The King could build the walls to the point where no barbarian could possible shoot an arrow over the walls. By doing this, the King has fulfilled both moral duties. He has protected his people and also lowered the possibility that he kills barbarians even though they never would have
