The Port of Long Beach was founded on June 24, 1911, a wild dream of 800 acres of mudflats at the mouth of the Los Angeles River. In the nine decades since then, those grand ambitions have been realized as the port expanded to include more than 7,600 acres of state-of-the-art cargo terminals, roadways, rail yards and shipping channels.

2.Impressive facts and current statistics

The Port of Long Beach is the second-busiest seaport in the United States and a key transportation hub in the global trade marketplace. More than $180 billion worth of cargo moves through the Port every year – everything from clothing and furniture to machinery and petroleum. East Asian trade accounts for about 90 percent of the shipments through the Port. The Port’s top trading partners are China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.

Empty Cargo Containers shows how empty containers move through the supply system to be filled with exports or shipped overseas to be refilled with goods bound for import.

The Port’s capital improvement projects include Middle Harbor, which will be able accommodate the latest generation of container vessels with the most technologically advanced container-moving system in the country. And the replacement for the Gerald Desmond Bridge will include a higher clearance to allow larger ships to reach the Back Channel.
