In addition to the studies reported in this review, a few studies by psychologists have been conducted Abroad:
Bud (1993) studied the positive and negative mood (condition of mood, emotional stage) and mental and physical energy in 71 normal volunteers in the age group of 21-76. He used three different methods, viz. inactivity, visualization and yogic breathing along with Pranayama. He concluded that Pranayama increases the mental, physical energy and gives a feeling of zeal more than the other two methods. Therefore, 30 minutes of yogic and respiratory practice has a special strengthening effect on mental and physical experience and increases the high positive mood.
Behanan (1971) viewed that consumption of oxygen increased by 24.5 and 18.5

Practitioners report that the practice of Pranayama develops a steady mind, strong will - power and sound judgment, and also claim that sustained Pranayama practice extends life and enhances perception.
Simple relaxation tools, such as deep breathing and relaxing imagery, can help calm down angry feelings (American psychological Association, December 4, 2007). Much as with headaches and hypertension, relaxation has generally positive effects on acute and chronic pain, although the results are relatively modest (Taylor, 1991). Nonetheless, relaxation and meditation almost always form part of a more comprehensive pain management program.
One of the more successful comprehensive treatments for chronic pain has been originated by Clare Philips (Philips, 1987). This program contains many of the same components found in general stress-reduction programs such as relaxation and cognitive therapy focused on developing new approaches and attitudes toward pain. After a 9-week treatment program for chronic pain, 12.6% of the treatment groups were entirely free of pain, 41.8% were much improved, and 38% were improved. Only 8% were in need of further treatment. Also pain intensity gradually decreased over the 12-month
Meditation is also appropriate in treating anxiety since persistent symptoms of anxiety, and depression, often reflect deficiencies in coping that meditation techniques often have a positive effect on (Toneatto & Ngyuen, 2007).
Almost everyone is preoccupied with happiness but yet the population seems to be increasingly unhappy. As society and human experience changes we can’t help but ask ourselves how can we fix an increasingly unhappy and dissatisfied society? Mindfulness meditation is a progressively popular solution to this issue. Mindfulness meditation stems from Buddhist tradition and is a practice that includes focusing one’s attention. Does mindfulness meditation have real psychological effects? And if so can they help improve quality of life? Many studies have been conducted proving that mindfulness meditation does have real psychological effects and can help individuals live a more meaningful and happy life. This can be proven through research related to neuroscience, depression and happiness.
The relationship discovered in the articles written by Denneson, et., al (2011) and Fletcher, et., al (2016) discuss how the Department of Veterans Affair is studying the significance of using complementary alternative medicine to effectively control chronic noncancerous pain versus the continuous use of opioids. Massage therapy was the most preferred and effective method for management of pain. In the article written by Fletcher, et., al (2016), about 60 percent of the outpatient was taking opioids for management of chronic pain.
According to The World Health Organisation (1999), defined pain as an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. Pain is traditionally described as acute or chronic pain. The prevalence of chronic pain (CP) is higher than of acute of pain, as it affects 7.8 million people of all ages in the UK (Chronic Pain Policy Coalition., 2006). The current leading cause of mortality that is accounting for 60% of all deaths is due to chronic diseases and is also a problem as causes an increasing burden on the health care service (World Health Organisation., 2007). CP can affect a person’s quality of life if managed poorly, statistics shows that 25% of people lose their job and 22% leads to depression. (Chronic Pain Policy Coalition.,

There are a variety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches in managing chronic pain. These are broken down to six major categories; they are pharmacological, interventional, neuromodulation, physical medicine, behavioral medicine and surgical approaches (1). A coordinated multidisciplinary team approach and detailed patient's history is essential in tailoring a patient-specific treatment plan that will meet treatment goals. A number of randomized systematic reviews found strong evidence that multidisciplinary approach including bio-psychosocial rehabilitation improves functional status when compared with non-multidisciplinary care (2,3). Here, we will focus our discussion on some of the advantages and disadvantages of medical management versus interventional management of chronic pain.
As a chronic pain sufferer, you should know that you're not alone. Chronic pain impacts many people and, as a result, is the subject of much research and experimentation. This means there is a wealth of information available about pain management. Invest some time researching pain management methods and give them a try to see what works best for you. People have used hypnosis, biofeedback, meditation, acupuncture and many other methods of pain control with varying results. Research and experimentation under your doctor's supervision may be the only way to know what works best for
Chronic Pain is an interesting problem in society today. The exact cause of Chronic Pain is not the same in every patient. In fact most patients present with different symptoms and associated pathologies, such as the strong link with depression. Treatment of Chronic Pain is often performed a single practitioner whether that be a Medical Doctor, Chiropractor, Nutritionist, or an alternative health care professional. Chronic Pain is often extremely complex, because of this treatment needs to be multidimensional. Effective care of Chronic Pain requires the collective cooperation of health care professionals
A major impact meditation has is on the physical increase of thickness of the cerebral cortex (outer layer of brain tissue) and grey matter

Pain is a basic mechanism in life that helps the body identify that something is wrong or dangerous. Without pain, the body would be severely damaged without realizing it. Pain can become an inconvenience when it spirals out of control; chronic pain, for example, leaves many miserable and unable to enjoy life to its fullest extent even with traditional medical intervention. Around 80% of people report chronic pain in their lifetime (Holtzman & Beggs, 2013). People afflicted by chronic back pain turn to modern medicine for relief, but even these alternatives are not always 100% effective.
Relaxation has never been easy, but it has been proven to occur when one’s mental processes and muscles have been relaxed. It is a very safe method and can be practiced through many different techniques. It has remained side by side to help with areas of therapy and has been very beneficial to countless of people worldwide.
In today’s environment, many people are suffering with the stress and anxiety of day to day living and are finding themselves unable to cope with life’s little emergencies. Prescription drugs are on the rise due to the increasing need for people to deal with their stress and anxiety. However, many people are searching for ways to be less stressed and live a happy and healthy life without drugs. If stress and anxiety are getting the best of you, then think about grabbing a mat and giving yoga and meditation a spin. With that in mind, this paper will take a look at the benefits of yoga and meditation to create a more peaceful and healthy lifestyle.
