Would you want your whole career ruined due to a mistake? Professional athletes more than likely label as the “Golden Children” and are expected to never do anything wrong. These athletes are the one’s little kids and young athletes look up to and aspire to be. One mistake and this can all go away. Everyone makes mistakes, but professional athletes take the fall harder due to their fame and fortune. Although professional athletes are in the public eye, their career should not be ruined due to crimes people commit every day because, underneath all the fame and fortune, they are just regular people. A role model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially younger people. Professional athletes …show more content…
If Rice was convicted, he would face up to five years in jail rather than a fine. Two months after his incident, Rice was accepted into a pretrial intervention program focused on rehabilitation (Elliott). As a result, Rice’s case never went to trial, and his aggravated assault charge would be dropped if he completed the program. Rice was originally suspended for two games without pay and fined $58,000 because of his aggravated assault charge but then he was suspended for six games due to the NFL’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault (Elliott). Ray Rice will likely never play another game in an NFL uniform because of the fact that he was caught on camera abusing his wife (Tyler).
The most famous case of an athlete getting away with a crime is O.J. Simpson. One of the most famous running backs in American history was involved in the biggest murder scandal of them all. O.J. Simpson was accused of the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. No other case in recent or present time has come close to affecting the U.S. judiciary system and the media access to the courts or shaping the public perception as much as this trail has (Hayslett). This incident happened twenty-two years ago and it is still the number one talked about case.
On September 9, 2003, Atlanta Thrashers hockey player, Dany Heatley, was driving a vehicle with himself and teammate Dan Snyder
Professional athletes are still people that have made mistakes in the past. There is no professional athlete that does not wish that he or she did not make the mistake that was made. A great example would be NFL Running Back Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings. The article discusses how Peterson had punished his 4-year-old son with a switch bare bottom. Peterson had admitted that he had beaten his son enough for him to draw blood. The court had declared this as child abuse against Peterson. Although, Peterson had defended
This case opened up more suspicion and also caused an effect on people regarding the hidden information that the NFl
This is something one has to ask themselves when you are talking about domestic violence in sports. I have done a lot of research on this topic now and I believe that they should have a standard punishment for domestic violence. Instead of one guy getting a two game suspension and another guy getting four game suspension they need to come to and agreement and decide how many games it will be for everyone. Now, yes you do have different sports and not all sports are the same length, a baseball season is 162 games a year, a football season is 16 games a year, and a basketball season is 83 games a year. Each sport I believe should have its own suspension but they have to have it the same for every guy in their sport. I think that in baseball you should get suspended for 75 games on your first offense and from then on it should increase. In football I believe you should get suspended for six games for your first offense. In basketball they should get suspended 40 games for a first offense. The reason I say first offense is because if a guy gets suspended for that many games he hurts the team and if it happens more than once than an organization probably will not want to sign you. I think that the NFL has not handled the situation correctly. Ray Rice has still yet to find another job since his incident has occurred, while Greg Hardy served his four game suspension and he is still playing for the Dallas Cowboys right now. The only reason Rice has yet to find another job is because he served his two game suspension and then videos were released and he was suspended for the whole year and his team released him. Yes, I believe that professional sports need to have a harsher punishment, but they need to have a standard of games that you are going to suspend a
When you display domestic violence in the public eye you not only damage your image, but the image of the NFL. It is embarrassing to the league when a team player is not acting professional at all times. They are always representing their team, even off the field. He also should be a role model to the younger kids who may look up to him. He was not punished enough for his
On February 19th, 2014, a video of Ray Rice, the running back of the Baltimore Ravens, was released in which he was seen dragging the body of his limp fiancee out of a casino elevator. After being arrested and spending a year in a pretrial intervention program, Ray Rice was suspended for only 2 games. However, shortly after this, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, changed the domestic violence policy of the NFL, making it so that first time offenders would receive a 6 game suspension, and second time offenders would be banned for life. Then, on September 9th, another video was released of Rice punching his fiancee in the head and knocking her unconscious. In response to this, the Ravens terminated Rice’s contract and the NFL suspended him
Have you ever heard about or seen O.J. Simpson? If you have you would know that he was suspected of murder and got away with it. He was suspected to have murdered Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman. Even when every piece of evidence pointed to O.J. he was let free and never charged with anything. There was also similar cases involving Ray Lewis and Jayson Williams. Although this happens not too often, but if athletes and celebrities continue to break the law then others will follow this action, that is why athletes and celebrities do get special treatment when they break the law.
The NFL player Ray Rice committed one of the worst crimes in the United States, domestic violence. The situation started with the player arguing with his wife, Janay, in a casino, than continued the argument in an elevator where he hit his wife knocking her to the ground and leaving her unconscious. Unfortunately for Ray he was videotaped and got shared to the police and NFL. He was than charged of domestic violence and suspended of the NFL for 2 games but later again another video was shared in the internet and that caused him his complete suspension from the NFL.
After Ray Rice was suspended by the National Football League (NFL) for assaulting his girlfriend at the time. Since his suspension, Rice has appealed
The definition of a role model is a person whose behaviour, example or success can be emulated by others, especially young people. Their values, actions and behaviours are upheld as an ideal and to be desired. Being a role model may not be taken in its entirety. It can be broken down allowing a person to be a role model in one area and not another. Being a manager is not a guarantee to be a role model. Good leaders will model behaviours that encourage employees to endorse organisational goals and objectives. By modelling the behaviours you find desirable and that will help reach company gaols others will also begin to model said behaviours.
Simpson case, another star football player was accused of homicide. This time, the culprit was inside linebacker Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens (Walker, “Ray Lewis' career as a Raven, year by year”). The incident occurred when Lewis and several of his acquaintances were allegedly involved in an altercation with Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar. Baker and Lollar were both fatally wounded in the fight, and once again, a plethora of evidence was found indicating that Lewis was guilty (Lee, “Remembering the Ray Lewis Controversy”). Baker’s blood was found inside of Lewis’ limo, and Lewis’ white suit (presumably stained with the victims’ blood) was never found (Plaschke, “The cold truth Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis can't completely escape”). In order to have the murder charges against him dropped, Lewis agreed to plead guilty for misdemeanor obstruction of justice and testify against his accomplices in court. The case ended, Lewis was fined $250,000, and he went on to win Super Bowl MVP honors the very next season (Goldberg, “NFL Fines Ray Lewis $250,000”). Today, Lewis is considered by many to be a first ballot Hall of Famer and one of the best linebackers of all time. His legacy will live on for generations. Nobody remembers, or cares to remember, Jacinth Baker or Richard
My role model is Alex Wassabi but to start off I am going to talk about what it means to be a role model. A role model is a person you admire. They may inspire you or you may want to be like them. Most role models have a positive influence on you and make you feel something inside.
A less severe punishment such as serving probation or minimal amounts of time in prison paired with an intervention course would suffice. League-issued suspensions and probations would not be harsh enough because of the overall status professional athletes have. Multi-million dollar contracts, constant media attention, and sponsorships are some of the common perks of being a professional athlete. The one true thing that gives these athletes all of those perks is the game they love to play. If professional athletes were aware that the game they love so much could be permanently taken away from them, it is quite possible that many of them would rethink their actions. The potential consequences that could result from engaging in domestic violence might be enough to at least show other athletes that such behavior will not be tolerated, preventing further violence. With the super star status some of these athletes hold, it is easy to see why they might believe the law can’t touch them or that they are invincible. Probation or small prison sentences will only keep these players temporarily out of the game that has made them who they are. Taking the game permanently away from them will truly teach them the consequences of their
On September 8, 2014, TMZ released another video, which shows the whole story of what happened the day Ray Rice knocked out his fiancée. This video showed Rice punch Janay in the face, and her going unconscious. After she falls to the floor, the video shows Rice drag her body out of the elevator. This tape has been private since the incident, and was finally released to the public. The NFL team that Rice plays on, the Baltimore Ravens, quickly cut Rice from the team after seeing the video evidence. The NFL then took it further and suspended him indefinitely from the league. This domestic violence altercation is just one case that shows the effects of domestic violence, and how this issue needs to
Everyday today's youth are asked what they want to be when they grow up. Some say teachers, firemen, police officers and a large response to that question is a professional athlete. Something that all these professions have in common is that they are all role models to children. Firemen, teachers, police officers have an easy job at doing this; they are after all the people that save children, teach children and protect children. But professional athletes on the other hand have a difficult task assigned to them when it comes to being role models. Professional athletes are not given an option as to be a role model or not. Just because they have a special gift does not make them have
What is a role Model? A role model in my opinion is someone that does the right thing constantly, someone that can lead others to doing the right thing. As the dictionary states a role model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people.
